  • Patent number: 8141433
Abstract: A method of measuring the gas flow of an incondensable gas in a flowing mixture of said incondensable gas and a condensable gas comprising the steps of calibrating a leak detector; injecting a known quantity of gauge gas at a known mass flow rate into said flowing mixture of gases; drawing a sample of the said gauge mix off at a sample point; passing said sample through a condenser so as to remove said condensable gas from the gauge mix, resulting in a test mix; passing the said test mix into the leak detector so as to measure the concentration of the gauge gas within the test mix; and calculating the mass flow rate of said incondensable gas within said flowing mixture. There is also provided a method of measuring the rate of ingress of an incondensable gas at an ingress point along a flow path of a flowing mixture of said incondensable gas and a condensable gas.

  • Patent number: 8128907
Abstract: A method is disclosed for providing a correcting factor for the dilution of measurements of at least one biomarker in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The method comprises providing semi-automated measurements of the ventricular system by MRI scans using quantitative anatomical protocols, determining a measurement of biomarker levels in CSF that has been extracted, correcting the measurement of the level of said at least one biomarker'according to the ventricular size, and providing a corrected result of the measurement determined in step (b), said corrected result accounting for concentration dilution due to the change in ventricular size. The method is particularly suited for the measurement of all biomarkers found in the CSF, such as those associated with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's Disease.

  • Patent number: 8122576
Abstract: The system has special application in the manufacture of aircraft wing covers (10 made of carbon fiber and the stringers (3) cured jointly with the wing cover during the polymerization in autoclave. The tool pieces (4) being used are defined by angular elements (5, 6) copying the geometry of the stringers (3). The shape of these stringers corresponds to the “T” section. The angular elements (5, 6) comprise, in their upper part, a pair of battlements (7) in order to be caught by part of the clamps (9) of a head (10) linked to a robot (11) of the spherical type with articulated arm with six axes. The angular elements (5, 6) are made of INVAR material and they are used to keep in position the stringers during the curing cycle in the autoclave.

  • Patent number: 8105423
Abstract: A method and apparatus for practicing the method are provided for separating droplets of finely aerosolized elemental mercury from a gaseous stream in which the droplets are dispersed. In the method a gold plated metallic capillary surface is contacted with the gaseous stream, causing the aerosolized droplets to deposit on the capillary surface and by capillary action to coalesce with other of such droplets to form increasingly large drops of mercury. The surface is oriented to allow the mercury to flow by gravitational forces and capillary action to the lowermost portions of the surface, at which it accumulates, and is then collected at a suitable vessel.

  • Patent number: 8088374
Abstract: The present invention relates to the use of Rspondins, particularly Rspondin2 (Rspo2) or Rspondin3 (Rspo3) or Rspondin nucleic acids, or regulators or effectors or modulators of Rspondin, e.g. Rspo2 and/or Rspo3 to promote or inhibit angiogenesis and/or vasculogenesis, respectively. The invention is based on the demonstration that Rspo3 and Rspo2 are angiogenesis promoters, and the identification of Rspo2 and 3 as positive regulators of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). These results indicate a major role for Rspondins, particularly Rspo3 and/or Rspo2 in the signaling system during angiogenesis. The invention also relates to the use of regulators or effectors or modulators of Rspondin3, including agonists and antagonists, in the treatment of conditions where treatment involves inhibiting or promoting angiogenesis and/or vasculogenesis.

  • Patent number: 8083156
Abstract: A dispersion apparatus for dispersing a treating agent into a fluid treatment system that includes a flow duct in which a fluid stream flowing through the duct is mixed with the treating agent. The apparatus is based on a multi-pipe lance positioned in the stream flow, where each pipe supplies a minimum of feed discharge nozzles (typically one to four), and the individual pipes branch off from the same location. Use of the multi-pipe lance, in combination with a suitable baffle, results in better overall dispersion/distribution of the injected medium by surface area. By improving the surface area distribution, better utilization of the injected sorbent can be achieved. The baffle acts to generate a low pressure zone on its downstream side and creates a high-intensity turbulence plume in the fluid. The orifices of the pipe are located to inject the treating agent into the turbulence plume to better distribute and intermix the injected treating agent into the surrounding fluid.
