  • Patent number: 8346759
Abstract: Provided are a system and article of manufacture for searching documents for ranges of numeric values. A number of posting lists is generated, wherein each posting list is associated with a range of consecutive values within the set of values and includes document identifiers for documents including at least one value within the range of consecutive values associated with the posting list, and wherein each document identifier is associated with one value in the set of values included in the document identified by the document identifier. The generated posting lists are stored. A query on a query range of values within the set of values is received and a determination is made of a minimum number of posting lists associated with consecutive values that together include the query range of values. The determined posting lists are merged.

  • Patent number: 8335900
Abstract: Provided are a method, system, and article of manufacture for converting backup copies of objects created using a first backup program to backup copies created using a second backup program. A plurality of backup copies of versions of an object are created using a first backup program, wherein the object has an object name. The first backup program is used to restore at least one of the backup copies to a restored version of the object having a name different from the object name. A second backup program is used to create a backup copy of each restored version of the object. A name of a designated object is assigned to each backup copy created using the second backup program. Metadata of each backup copy created using the second backup program is updated with metadata for the designated object.

  • Patent number: 8332605
Abstract: A directory and members are allocated to store a data set, wherein the directory stores pointers to the members to allow data stored in the members to be accessed. The directory is expanded to accommodate an expansion of the data set, causing the directory to be stored in non-contiguous pages and becoming fragmented. A computational device determines that a threshold that measures a level of fragmentation of the directory relative to an amount of storage allocated for the data set has been exceeded. The computational device reorganizes the fragmented directory, into a reorganized directory that is stored in contiguous pages at the end of the data set, in response to determining that the threshold has been exceeded.

  • Patent number: 8332368
Abstract: Provided are a method, system, and article of manufacture for generating information on application tasks for component objects grouped in a composite object. A composite object in a computer readable medium is comprised of component objects, wherein different application tasks are used to process the component objects. Metadata associates the application tasks for the component objects grouped in the composite object with the composite object. An operation is performed on the composite object by processing the metadata indicating the application tasks for the component objects grouped in the composite object on which the operation is performed.

  • Patent number: 8326893
Abstract: Provided are a method, system, and program for allocating data sets to a container data set. A container data set is allocated in a storage system. An entry is included in a file allocation catalog for the allocated container data set indicating an address range of data allocated to the container data set, wherein the file allocation catalog maps data sets to address ranges in the storage system. A virtual file allocation catalog for the container data set is generated. A request is received to allocate a data set. A determination is made as to whether the data set to allocate has a size less than a threshold size. An entry is included in the virtual file allocation catalog to allocate the data set in the address range of the container data set in response to determining that the data set to allocate size is less than the threshold size.

  • Patent number: 8326802
Abstract: A new file system is mounted to a mount point of an existing file system implemented in a computational system. A sentinel indicator is stored in the mount point. Prior to initiating an input/output (I/O) operation by a program, a determination is made by the program as to whether the sentinel indicator exists. In response to determining by the program that the sentinel indicator exists, the I/O operation is performed by the program. In certain alternative embodiments, in response to determining by the program that the sentinel indicator exists, the I/O operation is not performed by the program.

  • Patent number: 8327095
Abstract: Provided are a method, system, and article of manufacture for maintaining information of a relationship of target volumes comprising logical copies of a source volume. Information is maintained on a source volume having a plurality of data units and a plurality of target volumes created at different points-in-time maintaining a logical copy of the data units in the source volume for the different points-in-time. A source downstream pointer is generated for each data unit in the source volume to point to a corresponding data unit in a first target volume. For each target volume data unit whose data is maintained in the source volume or another one of the target volumes, a first upstream pointer is generated indicating one of the source and target volumes from which the target volume data unit inherits data.

  • Patent number: 8327004
Abstract: Novel storage area networks (SANs) and methods of operation thereof utilize a plurality of hosts coupled via an interconnect with one or more storage units. A manager device, process or other functionality in communication with a plurality of agent processes, devices or other functionality, each of which is associated with a host. The agents identify attributes of (i) their associated hosts, (ii) interconnect to which that host is coupled, and/or (iii) storage units to which that host is coupled via the interconnect. The manager responds to these attributes identified by the agents to manage the SAN. The manager can be implemented on a first digital data processor and the hosts on further digital data processors. These digital data processors can be coupled via a first network, e.g., an IP or other network, to support communications between the manager and the agents. A second network, e.g.

  • Patent number: 8316057
Abstract: Provided are computer program product, system, and method for restoring deduplicated data objects from sequential backup devices. A server stores data objects of extents having deduplicated data in the at least one sequential backup device. The server receives from a client a request for data objects. The server determines extents stored in the at least one sequential backup device for the requested data objects. The server or client sorts the extents according to an order in which they are stored in the at least one sequential backup device to generate a sort list. The server retrieves the extents from the at least one sequential backup device according to the order in the sort list to access the extents sequentially from the sequential backup device in the order in which they were stored. The server returns the retrieved extents to the client and the client reconstructs the requested data objects from the received extents.

  • Patent number: 8307341
Abstract: A system and method for creating customized documentation is disclosed. The method comprises storing one or more documents such that each of the one or more documents corresponds to one of a plurality of versions of a software product. The version of the software product which is installed in an installation environment is detected. The configuration of the installation environment is also detected. At least one document from the one or more documents that corresponds to the version of the software product installed in the installation environment is selected. • Patent number: 8307379
Abstract: Provided are a method, system, and article of manufacture for determining an extension to use to process an input object to a call in a program. An association of parameter definitions is indicated with extensions, where each extension comprises a program capable of being selected to process at least one input object as part of an operation. A call is received for an extension point including at least one input object to determine one extension to use to process the at least one object, wherein requirements are defined for the extension point. A determination is made of a set of candidate extensions capable of processing the at least one input object based on a first criteria determining extensions whose parameter definitions are capable of satisfying the requirements defined for the extension point. A selection is made from the set of candidate extensions of one extension to use to process the at least one object using a second criteria.
