  • Patent number: 4276863
Abstract: Apparatus for controlling the number of enabled cylinders of an internal combustion engine during deceleration comprises a plurality of comparators responsive to a signal indicative of the engine rotational speed upon deceleration of the engine. The threshold voltages of the comparators are arranged stepwise so that each comparator produces an output signal when the engine speed falls below each threshold voltage. The output signals of the comparators are supplied to logic circuits to control a plurality of switches via which the fuel injection control pulse signal is respectively applied to fuel injection valves to increase in a stepwise fashion the number of enabled cylinders from the fuel cut-off state thereby preventing occurrence of impacts or shocks in the transition period of reactivation of the cylinders upon deceleration.

  • Patent number: 4275812
Abstract: In a surgical glove package, the surgical glove is contained in a cylindrical ring with the cuff of the glove stretched around the ring to open the cuff of the glove. A bag also contained within the ring has its mouth sealed around said ring and encloses the outer surface of the glove to protect the sterility thereof. To don the glove, the hand is inserted through the ring into the glove and then the cuff of the glove is released from the ring. The ring is then removed from the hand in a manner to turn the bag inside out as the ring passes over the hand so that the bag remains between the ring and the hand as the ring is passing over the hand.

  • Patent number: 4274382
Abstract: The engine crankshaft rotational speed is detected to be compared with stepwise arranged threshold speeds so as to stepwise enable fuel injection valves of respective cylinders during deceleration of the engine. Accordingly, the number of enabled cylinders is increased in a stepwise manner from a fuel cut-off state as the engine rotational speed decreases to prevent engine stall, while occurrence of shocks upon reactivation of cylinders is avoided. The threshold speeds are controlled in accordance with the variation of engine load which may be increased upon operation of auxiliary power consuming units, such as an air conditioner the compressor of which is driven by the engine, for preventing undesirable vibrations of the engine during the stepwise reactivation of the cylinders.

  • Patent number: 4274764
Abstract: A stabilizing arrangement for mine roof support systems of the type in which a series of support units, each including a transverse beam supported at opposite ends by extensible props, are interconnected by extensible struts in a manner to be self-advancing by alternate retraction of support units from a roof supporting condition and extension of the struts to advance such retracted units relative to others of such units which are in an extended roof engaging condition. The connection of each prop to the beam in a given unit is pivotal to allow deflection of the beam and props of a supporting unit from a normal perpendicular relationship under load. The stabilizing means restores the props and beam to a normal perpendicular relationship for advancing movement of each support unit.

  • Patent number: 4264826
Abstract: An apparatus for generating thermal and electrical energy includes an internal combustion engine connected to and adapted to drive a generator for providing electrical power and a brake for generating thermal energy. In one embodiment, a heat carrier flows through appropriate conduits for absorbing heat energy from the brake, from the combustion chamber of the engine, and from the engine exhaust gases and delivers the heat energy to a end-use heat exchanger, for example, a room or space heater. In a second embodiment, the engine exhaust gas flow is used to drive a gas turbine that, in turn, drives a compressor in a thermal cycle to provide additional heat transfer capability.

  • Patent number: 4264205
Abstract: An improved optical system is disclosed for rapid, accurate spectral analysis of the reflectivity or transmissivity of samples. A concave holographic diffraction grating oscillated at high speed is utilized to provide a rapid scanning of monochromatic light through a spectrum of wavelengths. The grating is positively driven at very high speed. The rapid scan by the grating enables the reduction of noise error by averaging over a large number of cycles. It also reduces the measurement time and thus prevents sample heating by excessive exposure to light energy. A filter wheel having opaque segments is rotated in the optical path and is synchronous with the grating. The filter wheel is divided into two arcuate segments separated by the opaque segments arranged approximately 180 degrees apart. One arcuate segment of the wheel transmits only first order light. The other arcuate segment transmits only second order light.

  • Patent number: 4263578
Abstract: An A.C. voltage picked up from the alternator driven by an internal combustion engine is converted into a pulse train signal so that the number of the pulses is counted for a period of time defined by a reference timing signal produced in synchronization with the rotation of the crankshaft of the engine. When the number of the pulses reaches a predetermined value during the period of time, a counter produces an output signal to indicate that the slipping rate of the belt is within a tolerance. On the other hand, when the number of pulses is less than the predetermined number, the counter does not produce an output signal (indicating that the slipping rate is over the tolerance). The output of the counter may be averaged over a plurality of measuring times.

  • Patent number: 4258707
Abstract: A traction apparatus for medical purposes, wherein an adjustable traction generated by an electromotor is transmitted to the body of a patient by means of a drawing cable. The traction appearing in the drawing cable is continuously measured and compared with the selected traction magnitude, and the drawing cable is wound or unwound by the electromotor in dependence on the difference established by the comparison until this difference has at least approximately been reduced to zero. Preferably, an intermittent traction is exerted, in such manner that holding periods in which the full traction is applied are interrupted by rest periods, in which an adjustable rest force different from zero is exerted. The traction appearing in the drawing cable may be measured by passing the cable over a shaft on which a flexional load is exerted by the traction and by arranging strain gauges on said shaft.
