  • Patent number: 5301483
Abstract: A composite, prestressed structural member, such as a bridge unit and methods of forming such a member. The apparatus includes a plurality of longitudinally extending girders which are transversely spaced and a plurality of adjacent composite units disposed on the girders. Each composite unit has a plurality of beams with a molded deck portion formed thereabove. The beams are positioned transversely with respect to the girders and attached thereto. Additional, longitudinal beams are disposed between the transversely extending beams over the girders. The longitudinal beams are attached to the girders and by connectors to the molded deck. The structure is formed by positioning the girders on a construction support adjacent to a center portion of the girders such that the free ends of the girders cantilever and deflect downwardly. The beams of the composite units are attached to the girders in this construction position. Any gaps between adjacent composite units are filled with a non-shrink, high strength grout.

  • Patent number: 5215366
Abstract: A storage apparatus for support either on a ground surface or from a ceiling surface. The apparatus includes a container portion with a tubular member positioned adjacent to each vertical corner thereof. A leg is telescopingly positioned in each tube. The legs may extend downwardly to the ground surface or, alternatively, may be reversed to extend upwardly to the ceiling surface. The tubes extend above the top of the container portion and below the bottom thereof so that when pluralities of the storage apparatus are stacked, the loading is carried by the tubes. A horizontally folding door assembly is disposed across an opening in the container portion. The door assembly has lips thereon to prevent access to gaps between the door assembly and the container portion and between upper and lower portions of the door assembly. The lower portion of the door assembly is guided as the door is opened and closed, and counterbalancing is provided to assist in opening and closing.

  • Patent number: 5211803
Abstract: Poly(arylene sulfide) articles having plated metal paths thereon are disclosed. A pattern of areas of lesser crystallinity and areas of higher crystallinity is created in the polymer morphology of a surface of the article. The surface is then exposed to a chemical etchant selectively active upon the areas of lesser crystallinity thereby etching those areas of lesser crystallinity while leaving areas of higher crystallinity substantially unaffected. Then a conductive metal is deposited on the etched areas of lesser crystallinity by an electroless plating process. Subsequent electroplating can also be used.

  • Patent number: 5210128
Abstract: The present invention provides: (a) a method for producing a poly(arylene sulfide)(PAS) resin composition: (b) a PAS resin composition produced by the inventive resin composition production method; (c) a method which utilizes the inventive PAS resin composition in the production of a continuous fiber-reinforced composite; and (d) a PAS composite produced by the inventive composite production method. The PAS resin composition produced by the inventive resin composition production method comprises a crystallizable arylene sulfide polymer and a nucleating agent. The nucleating agent is admixed with the crystallizable arylene sulfide polymer by adding said nucleating agent to the polymerization reaction system. The inventive PAS resin composition solidifies to a fine-grained crystalline morphology and is well suited for use in the production of continuous fiber-reinforced composites, molded articles, and other products.

  • Patent number: 5203624
Abstract: A portable electric warning light comprises an elongated electrically conducting housing to which an end cap is connected at one end to provide an on/off switch function and to which a gas discharge flash tube is connected at the other end for emitting, through both end and side walls of a cover connected to the housing, bright flashes of light in response to the operation of batteries and an electronic circuit contained within the housing. The batteries are rechargeable, which can be accomplished in a particular implementation wherein external terminals provide access to the batteries without disassembling the light. The connection of one end of the batteries to the electronic circuit is made through the end cap assembly and the housing, and in one embodiment the connection of the other end of the batteries to the electronic circuit is made through the metallic housing of a flash capacitor forming part of the circuit.

  • Patent number: 5203680
Abstract: An integral gas compressor and internal combustion engine. The compressor is built by converting a portion of an internal combustion engine to a compressor by removing the original engine head and valve train and replacing these with a compressor head assembly. The compressor head assembly includes compressor valves and valve chairs for holding the compressor valves in place. An inlet manifold encloses all of the valve chairs and places all of the inlet flow paths through the valve chairs in communication with a gas source. The head defines a discharge passageway therethrough which is in communication with a discharge opening. A venting system is provided to vent any gas that might build up in the compressor due to leakage past the piston rings and to transfer this vented gas to a fuel inlet of the engine, as desired. An oil viscosity sensing system is provided for sensing the oil viscosity in the crankcase and shutting down the engine when the viscosity drops below a predetermined level.

  • Patent number: 5201411
Abstract: An inventive apparatus for cleaning a prosthesis in a microwave oven. The inventive apparatus comprises a container having an opening at the top thereof, a cover which is removably positionable over the opening, and a holding device, removably positionable in the container, for holding the prosthesis. Since most prostheses contain at least some metallic parts, the container and cover are each composed of a microwave insulating material. The inventive apparatus allows the quick and efficient cleaning of prostheses and facilitates the removal of dangerous fungal and bacterial deposits therefrom.
