  • Patent number: 6483617
Abstract: An optical transmission system comprises a number of optical terminals connected by optical waveguides such as optical fibers. Nonlinear processes occurring within an optical transmission medium of the waveguide or within the optical terminals is detected by a monitor which outputs monitored data representative of the products of nonlinearity. The data is used to control the power of the optical signal such that power is regulated to avoid the onset of the nonlinear process. The data may also be used to indicate an alarm condition to an operator. A monitor for four wave mixing detection utilizes dither signals applied to respective frequency components of a wavelength division multiplexed signal, products of the four wave mixing process being detected in the monitor by correlation between a sample of a received optical signal and reference data representative of dither induced modulation in the four wave mixing product.

  • Patent number: 6483871
Abstract: A digital signal phase detector comprising a first circuit arranged to provide a phase difference signal representative of both the clock period of a clock signal and the difference in phase between the clock and a data signal, and a second circuit arranged to provide a reference signal representative of the clock period of the clock signal. At least one of the first and second circuits is coupled to a set point control signal and the corresponding output signal is representative of that set point control signal. A comparison of the phase difference signal with the reference signal provides an indication of the difference between the desired set point of the circuit and the phase difference between the clock and the data signal. A corresponding method of digital signal phase detection is also provided.

  • Patent number: 6480495
Abstract: A non-geostationary satellite connection-less network incorporates a plurality of satellite nodes and ground stations in communication with the nodes. The network is modeled by the corresponding virtual model network. In the virtual network, connections between users are available between virtual nodes and are made according to a restricted set of routing plans based on the modeled virtual paths between those nodes. The virtual model provides a means of determining admission of connection-orientated calls of different quality of service (QoS) traffic class requirements into the network with engineered grade of service (GoS) and QoS guarantees.

  • Patent number: 6480524
Abstract: Sectorisation has been used in cellular communications networks in order to increase capacity without the need for obtaining new cell sites. However, previously, the increase in the number of main antenna beams provided by a base station transceiver has not produced a commensurate increase in capacity. For example, a hex sectored tricellular network is found to provide an increase in capacity by a factor of only 1.6 over a tri sectored tricellular network despite the fact that twice as many antenna beams are provided. A multiple beam antenna arrangement is described where the increase in capacity is commensurate with the increase in the number of antenna beams provided. In one example, a nine sectored tricellular CMDA network is described which comprises a multiple beam antenna arrangement with six antenna elements each provided as columns. The antenna beams may be orthogonal and a 6×6 Butler matrix beamformer is used which is advantageously loss less.

  • Patent number: 6480650
Abstract: It is known to couple a collimated beam of light into the end of an optical fibre with a graded index lens having an angled facet at the lens/fibre interface to reduce the amplitude of Fresnel retroreflected power. The expense incurred in providing angled facets is avoided by using a two-part compound lens. One part is a graded index lens part having an axial length shorter than a quarter period. To this is bonded a cylindrical uniform refractive index lens part whose index is matched with the effective refractive index of the fibre. This reduces the amplitude of the retroreflection power by causing the displacement of the Fresnel reflection from the lens focus.

  • Patent number: 6477566
Abstract: In a management system of a communications network comprising a plurality of network elements, capacity and capability of one or more individual network elements is represented by a set of data templates. A first set of data templates represent internal construction and physical resources of a network element. A second set of templates represent connectivity capabilities of the physical resources. The data templates are stored at an element controller, controlling a plurality of network elements. The element controller learns about the capacity and capabilities of the network elements, by receiving a set of reference messages generated by the network elements, over an operations, administration and maintenance channel. The reference messages point to the data templates stored at the element controller thereby enabling efficient enrollment of network elements by transmission of compressed messages over the operations, administration and maintenance channel.

  • Patent number: 6477249
Abstract: A splitter separates telephony traffic (POTS) from digital subscriber line (ADSL) traffic occupying a higher frequency band. The splitter comprises a low-pass filter for passing the telephony traffic, the low-pass filter being operable to vary its filtering response between a first low-pass response for use during telephony speech traffic, and a second, more restrictive, low-pass response for use during at least part of the time that telephony signalling traffic is present. During speech traffic a filter is used which provides a good impedance match with a telephony terminal or linecard so as to minimize detrimental effects on sidetone and echo performance which may impair a user's speech quality. The filter response can be varied according to a detected property of the telephony traffic, such as amplitude or rate of change of amplitude of the traffic.
