  • Patent number: 6171558
Abstract: A generator for continuously creating chlorine dioxide. A lamp is positioned in a container holding aqueous chlorite, and the aqueous chlorite is circulated through a circulation tube. A shield reduces contact between the lamp radiation and the aqueous chlorite outside of the circulation tube. The aqueous chlorite in the circulation tube is irradiated by the lamp to generate chlorine dioxide. The chlorine dioxide can be removed from the container with an vacuum eductor or can be transported with a gas sparge. Continuous production of the chlorine dioxide can be monitored and controlled with a control module which detects the quantity of chlorine dioxide generated. The generator reduces safety hazards associated with the handling of chlorite solutions and provides an inexpensive, portable system for the in situ generation of chlorine dioxide.

  • Patent number: 6170106
Abstract: A movable safety tunnel rides on parapets within a bridge. The safety tunnel is locked in place in a respective section of the bridge while maintenance or other operations are performed on that section of the bridge. This allows the traffic to flow through the safety tunnel and along the bridge, and the safety tunnel shields the traffic from any dust or debris. When the maintenance on that respective section of the bridge has been completed, the safety tunnel is unlocked and pushed (and/or pulled) by suitable equipment to the next adjacent section of the bridge; and the safety tunnel is again locked in place as the maintenance is performed. This procedure continues, progressively, along the bridge. In one embodiment, the safety tunnel has a trolley system riding on respective rails constructed on top of the parapets.

  • Patent number: 6152826
Abstract: An impact universal joint has a socket which receives a swivel head. A flat leaf spring with dependent members is connected to the upper face of the socket. The swivel head is substantially a sphere with spaced-apart lugs formed around a circumference of the sphere. Axially connected to the sphere is a body having an opening distal from the sphere. The opening receives a power driver. The socket has a cavity formed therein which cooperates with the spherical swivel head. The cavity has a plurality of spaced-apart channels formed therein dividing the cavity into respective segments. Each channel of the cavity receives a respective lug of the swivel head. Each lug has an outer face which is curved to cooperate with the outer wall of the respective channel. Each lug further has a pair of opposite driving faces which are convex to allow the spherical swivel head to swivel within the socket without binding.

  • Patent number: 6134991
Abstract: A pawl for use in a ratchet wrench having a ratchet gear in an opening and the pawl in a communicating pawl opening. A detent ball and spring are in a bore in the wrench communicating with the pawl opening. A relief surface is formed on each side surface of the pawl extending from the front surface of the pawl toward the back surface. The front surface of the pawl has an intermediate surface having opposite ends forming teeth. A tooth is formed on the approximate mid-point of the intermediate portion. The back face of the pawl has two pockets separated by a center ridge. Each pocket has a ramp near the center ridge, each ramp joins a concave portion. A furrow is formed in at least one pocket extending from the bottom surface of the pawl to a point opposite the bore for the detent spring such that the detent ball may be introduced into the furrow and directed into the bore. A spacing hub is formed on the pawl to minimize friction between the pawl and the cover plate.

  • Patent number: 6130179
Abstract: A method for producing an attapulgite clay (Fuller's Earth) that significantly removes other types of clays and minerals, resulting in improved performance. A unique dispersant is used that will fully disperse the individual attapulgite particles in water such that the particles remain in suspension, and said dispersant will not fully disperse other clay and mineral species, which then can be easily separated through various techniques. The attapulgite clay may be recovered from the dispersion and dried in such a manner to produce a finely sized powder from ore, without the need for any grinding or milling operation. The dried attapulgite clay with adsorbed dispersant is redispersed in water and retain thixotropic properties.

  • Patent number: 6096118
Abstract: A two-stage electrostatic separator for separating particles from a particle laden gas stream includes a pre-charging section and spaced-apart gas-permeable grounded and discharge electrodes charged at opposite polarities and defining a separating section between them, the grounded electrode being positioned upstream from the discharge electrode. The particles in the particle laden gas stream are pre-charged to a certain charge in the pre-charging section and penetrate through the grounded electrode into the separating section, where the particles are separated from the particle laden gas stream. As a result, a clean gas stream exits from the separating section through the discharge electrode, and the particles separated from the particle laden gas stream are partially collected on the grounded electrode, and partially are removed with a bleed flow which is recirculated. The electrodes may be of linear or cylindrical shape, and linear electrodes may be arranged in a "zig-zag" order.

  • Patent number: 6089201
Abstract: A method of using a petroleum based fuel in an internal combustion gasoline engine. The fuel has a flash point of at least 100.degree. F. and the fuel is heated, within the engine, to a temperature above 100.degree. F. The heated fuel is introduced into the cylinders in the engine and ignited within the cylinder to start the engine. The heat source is removed after the engine has become warm. In an alternate embodiment, the electrodes of the spark plugs are continually energized until the electrodes are at a temperature above the flashpoint of the fuel. The electrodes of the spark plugs are then energized intermittently and the fuel is introduced into the heated cylinders to ignite the fuel in the cylinders in a selected sequence.
