  • Patent number: 4520660
Abstract: An engine timing apparatus comprises an ultrasonic transducer 8 which directs a pulsed ultrasonic beam into a cylinder and converts the reflected ultrasonic signals into electrical signals. A sample/hold circuit 67 samples this signal at a time after each pulse when signal reflected by a piston ring passing through the beam are expected. A microcomputer 65 detects changes in the level of the sampled signal caused by the piston rings as the crankshaft rotates, and receives signals from a transducer 71 indicating the crankshaft position to allow top dead center position to be found. The microcomputer receives signals from a microphone 51 directed at a fuel injector indicative of the onset of ignition and calculates the timing angle of the engine. The apparatus also calculates engine speed and detects piston slap.

  • Patent number: 4519479
Abstract: In an elevator having a converter which changes an A.C. output from an A.C. power source into a D.C. output, an inverter which changes the D.C. output of the converter into an A.C. output, a current detector which detects an output current of the inverter, and an inverter controller which controls the inverter on the basis of the detected current value of the current detector and a command current value, a hoist motor being driven by the A.C. output of the inverter; the operation of the inverter being stopped when a difference between the detected current value and command current value of the current detector for detecting the output current of the inverter exceeds a preset value. Accordingly, a current detector for detecting current flowing through the inverter is dispensed with, to realize a simple arrangement and a low cost.

  • Patent number: 4517857
Abstract: A multi-spindle head attachment in which a positively rotated main spindle gear is meshed with a plurality of intermediate gears which are, in turn, meshed with spindle gears fitted respectively onto spindles each adapted to grip a drill, a tap or the like. Further, one of the spindles can be located in the position where its axis is aligned with the center of axis of the main spindle gear. Disc-like interference preventing members for preventing interference between the intermediate gears and the spindle gears, are provided to the intermediate gears and/or the spindle gears. Each interference preventing member has a diameter slightly larger than that of its corresponding addendum circle of the intermediate gear or spindle gear, and therefore its outer peripheral surface protrudes from the addendum circle of each gear. A slight gap is formed between each interference preventing member and the end face of each gear.

  • Patent number: 4518862
Abstract: An apparatus for determining the position of a sheet when the sheet is placed on a support having at least two spaced apart CCD linear image sensors recessed in the sheet support and partially covered by the edge portions of the sheet. • Patent number: 4518053
Abstract: A drive and control system for articulated vehicles which normally operates in an efficient push-mode with only the wheels of the rear section being driven, but which operates in a hybrid mode when the vehicle has a tendency to jackknife wherein a controlled torque is applied to the rear wheels of the forward section. The value of the torque is determined as a predetermined increasing function of the magnitude of the connection force at the articulation connection and the magnitude of the articulation angle. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the drive shaft to the differential which drives the wheels of the rear section also drives a variable displacement hydraulic pump which feeds fixed displacement hydraulic motors connected by overrunning clutches to the rear wheels of the forward section.

  • Patent number: 4518012
Abstract: An air damper assembly has a frame which is mounted on the walls of an air flow passageway, with flanges extending inwardly from at least one pair of opposed sides of the frame. A plurality of elongated damper blades have their opposite ends extending into pairs of opposed slots formed by the frame flanges, pivotally supporting the blades on the flanges for pivoting movement between open and closed positions. A pair of retaining stop means are associated with each end of each blade. These retaining stop means project outwardly from opposite sides of the blade and on opposite sides of each of the flanges for limiting pivoting movement of the blade to an open position and for retaining the blade in the respective slots in the flanges. The main body portion of each blade limits pivoting movement of the blade to a closed position by engaging opposite sides of the flanges on which the blade is pivotally supported.

  • Patent number: 4517221
Abstract: In response to a stop command such as a printing disturbance signal, the transfer of varnish to the varnish applicator roller is shut off but the feeding of sheets through the varnishing unit is not immediately shut off; rather, a few remaining sheets are thereafter fed through the varnishing unit before the varnish applicator roller is thrown off from the cooperating cylinder and the machine drive is shut off. The few remaining sheets remove the residual varnish from the varnish applicator roller so that when printing is resumed the newly printed sheets do not stick to the varnish applicator roller or the cooperating cylinder. In a preferred embodiment a preselection counter, clocked by sheet feed cycles, determines the number of remaining sheets.

  • Patent number: 4517134
Abstract: In a variable venturi carburetor in which the metering jet portion of fuel changes automatically according to the amount of intake air required to keep the mixture at a constant air-to-fuel ratio at all times, two series-arranged nozzles and an auxiliary fuel passage communicating with the downstream side of the venturi and with the space formed between the two nozzles additionally formed at the fixed venturi portion in such a way that the auxiliary fuel passage can be opened or closed according to engine operating conditions. Therefore, when the auxiliary fuel passage is opened, since fuel is introduced into the venturi through only a single nozzle, a rich mixture is obtained; when the auxiliary fuel passage is closed, since fuel is introduced through two nozzles, a lean mixture is obtained.
