  • Patent number: 5192869
Abstract: A device for controlling beams of particles, X-rays and gamma rays including a plurality of channels with total external reflection inner surfaces, input butt-ends facing a radiation source and output butt-ends aimed at a radiation receiver is taught. Channel-forming elements are in the form of surfaces, tubes, and structures with multiple channels and are rigidly positioned one relative to another with a spacing between supports such that the sagging of the channel-forming elements does not interfere with beam propagation. The device can be used to capture radiation from sources which produce parallel or divergent radiation. The resulting beam or beams can be of a variety of shapes or angular orientations including quasi-parallel, convergent, and split beams.

  • Patent number: 5174335
Abstract: To evacuate a vacuum chamber without stirring up particles in the chamber or associated piping, a pneumatically-actuated vacuum valve is used between the chamber and the vacuum pump. The valve controls evacuation in two stages: in the first stage, the valve partially opens, and a skirt with leak vents in it is brought into play so that air is drawn slowly through the leak vents to gradually achieve a vacuum of a few Torr without stirring up particles; in the second stage, the valve fully opens, and the remaining air in the chamber can be drawn out efficiently, utilizing the large diameter of the valve fully, without risk of stirring up particles. The actuation of the valve is controlled by a timer, which dictates how long the valve stays in the partially-open state before switching to the fully-open state.

  • Patent number: 5065266
Abstract: A rotary transmitting mechanism for an auto-reverse tape recorder having a change-over gear and associated charge-over supporting member disposed on the head-mounting plate is provided. The mechanism utilizes motor driven left and right transmission gears, a change-over gear supporting member movably supported on the head-mounting plate, and a change-over plate movably mounted on the upper surface of the chasis. When the change-over plate moves in either a left- or right-hand direction, the change-over gear supporting member is likewise moved to allow the change-over gear to be separated from the reel gear and transmission gear on one side while meshing with the other side's reel gear and transmission gear. To elastically absorb the excess movement of the change-over plate, the change-over gear supporting member has two elastic arms protruding from both sides. By providing such a mechanism, more efficiently and lower cost are obtained.
