  • Patent number: 6146789
Abstract: In a battery in which a metallic battery case for accommodating electricity-generating elements also serves as an electrode, a visible-light or near-infrared-light curing resin is used for providing a coating to insulate an end face and a peripheral edge portion of an opening portion of the battery case or a gap between a positive electrode and a negative electrode. The visible-light or near-infrared-light curing resin excels in a depth-curing characteristic as compared with a conventional ultraviolet curing resin, and cures well even up to a portion such as an insulating seal of a battery where a light-receiving port is light and the light is difficult to reach. Hence, the visible-light or near-infrared-light curing resin is prevented from becoming peeled off and provides a reliable insulting characteristic.

  • Patent number: 6145286
Abstract: An apparatus for strapping packages with a band (7) made of weldable plastic comprises a band-supply unit, a band-transporting and -tensioning unit, a closure unit, which is provided as a separate unit and has an abutment plate, and a band-guidance unit and has at least one band clamp (15) with a pivotably mounted clamping part (10). The band clamp (15) is formed by a specific recessed section (14) of the abutment plate (5) and the clamping part (10), a curved operative surface (40) being provided on the clamping part, and the band clamp (15) being self-locking. Selecting the clamping angle W for the band (7) between the clamping part (10) and recessed section (14) to be as large as possible means that it is easier to release the band clamp when the band is tensioned. The apparatus makes it possible for strapping bands to be applied, even with high tensioning, without slipping during the closure operation.

  • Patent number: 6144338
Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for providing a more accurate position of a mobile receiver even though a signal received by the mobile receiver indicating the position of the mobile receiver is inaccurate. The received signal is used as an estimated indication of the position of the mobile receiver. A database comprises geometrical objects representing navigable routes. The geometrical objects include a geometry attribute defining the geometry of a complete representation of the navigable route. A geometrical object representing a navigable route is determined where the mobile receiver is probably located. The estimated position of the mobile receiver can then be compared against the geometry of the navigable route and against the previous positions in which the mobile receiver was located. The estimated position of the mobile receiver can be adjusted if necessary to provide a more probable position of the mobile receiver.

  • Patent number: 6142374
Abstract: An optical character reader is provided for detecting frame lines of a character entry frame printed on a medium in which a character is written. The optical character reader includes a scanner, a frame width determining circuit, and a frame line equation defining circuit. The scanner scans the medium to produce a bit-mapped image of the medium including a character entry frame image represented with black pixels. The frame width determining circuit determines a width of the frame lines of the character entry frame based on a histogram of the number of black pixels continuously arranged over one of the frame lines in a direction perpendicular to the length of the frame lines. The frame line equation defining circuit defines line equations representing side boundaries of each of the frame lines according to a least squares method using set of pixels arranged on sides of each of the frame lines over the width of the frame lines to determine locations of the frame lines on the bit-mapped images.

  • Patent number: 6141104
Abstract: An optical improvement for angular position sensors, which may be used to determine the spatial coordinates of a small source of light (or other energy) in a 3-dimensional volume. Such sensors normally include a linear photosensitive image detector such as a photodiode array or a charge-coupled device (CCD). An irregular pattern of parallel slits is described which increases the amount of light gathered while avoiding the undesirable characteristics of lens optics for this application. One optimal type of irregular pattern is the uniformly redundant array. A mathematical correlation function together with a polynomial interpolation function can determine the displacement of the image on the detector and thereby the location of the source relative to one angular dimension. Given the locations and orientations of several sensors in a 3-dimensional coordinate system and given the angles measured by each, the location of the point source can be computed.

  • Patent number: 6140964
Abstract: A method of detecting a position of a radio mobile station in radiocommunications, which is capable of accurately and simply finding the position of the mobile station. At a measuring point the mobile station measures the reception radio strength levels from a plurality of base stations and conveys the measurement results through the base station to a control station. The control station learns, through a neural network, the correlation between the reception radio strength levels and the position of the mobile station on the basis of the measurement results at a plurality of measuring points and the positions of the measuring points. Subsequently, when the mobile station communicates to the control station the reception radio strength levels measured at an arbitrary point, the control station estimates the position of the mobile station, causing those measurement results, on the basis of the correlation obtained through the learning.

  • Patent number: 6138363
Abstract: A portable knife includes a retainer portion to reliably hold a knife within a sheath even when a grip of the knife collides with a solid object. An actuating slider mounted in proximity to the retainer portion slides in the direction along which the knife is drawn out from the sheath. A bottom portion of the actuating slider slidable along one of slide surfaces of locking projections formed on the knife grip pushes up the retainer portion engaged with the locking projections until the retainer portion is disengaged from the locking projection.

  • Patent number: 6135264
Abstract: An electronic component supplying apparatus conveys electronic components in an aligned state to supply the same to a predetermined taking-out position. When a leading chip component abuts on a component stopper and a component conveyance is stopped, a plurality of the chip components including the leading chip component are covered in a non-contacting state by a slider, the leading chip component which has abutted on the component stopper is attracted to the component stopper. In a state where the component conveyance by the conveying path is stopped, the component stopper is displaced in a component conveying direction, the leading chip component is separated from a second leading chip component, and also the slider is displaced in a direction opposite to the component conveying direction, so that the slider covering is uncovered, and the leading chip component is allowed to be taken out.

  • Patent number: 6134664
Abstract: A method of reducing the volume of native audit data from further analysis by a misuse and intrusion detection engine is disclosed. Typically, more than ninety percent of the volume of audit information received from heterogeneous operating systems does not need to be analyzed by a misuse and intrusion detection engine because this audit information can be filtered out as not posing a security threat. Advantageously, by reducing (eliminating) the volume of audit information, a misuse and intrusion engine can more quickly determine whether a security threat exists because the volume of data that the engine must consider is drastically reduced. Also, advantageously, the audit information that is forwarded to the engine is normalized to a standard format, thereby reducing the computational requirements of the engine. The method of reducing the volume of native audit data includes comparing each of the native audits against at least one template and against at least one native audit.

  • Patent number: 6132115
Abstract: A thermal printer has a multiple element print head which is movable relative to a platen in a printing stroke to transfer ink from a ribbon to a substrate film sandwiched between the print head and the platen. The print head is mounted so as to be movable across the platen in the printing stroke and in a return stroke, and towards and away from the platen at the beginning and end of the printing stroke respectively, The print head is driven by a print head drive mechanism including and electric motor. The motor is so coupled to the print head as to cause it to execute each of the above-described print head movements. During the printing stroke, the ribbon is moved in the same direction as the print head.

  • Patent number: 6130689
Abstract: In an apparatus and method for injecting a recording solution of a print head, a second thin film capable of regulating deforming quantity and buckling force of a vibration plate is coupled to a thin film shape memory alloy by using a semiconductor thin film fabricating process to increase the buckling force when the thin film shape memory alloy is cooled down to be buckled to its initial bending-deformed state. Thus, the time taken for buckling to the bending-deformed state of the vibration plate after injecting the recording solution is reduced and the operating frequency is increased to heighten printing speed, and rigidity of the vibration plate is heightened to reduce a concern about a damage by an external shock.
