  • Patent number: 5855166
Abstract: Retrofittable hay bale measuring apparatus measures the size of the hay bale being formed, and indicates the size of the bale being formed to a control and display unit. The baler operator sets the desired hay bale size and monitors the baler operation on the display. A contact wheel, which contacts the hay bale and rotates as the bale is being formed, is rotationally attached to a measuring wheel. Alternatively, the contact wheel may itself comprise the measuring wheel. The rotation of the measuring wheel is monitored by a rotation detector which generates a hay bale measuring signal, and sends it to the control and display unit. The control and display unit generates a signal which indicates to the baler when it is time to tie off a bale of hay, based upon the measuring signal.

  • Patent number: 5835393
Abstract: A preadder for a multiplier integrates a pre-adder and Booth encoder. The integrated pre-adder/Booth encoder comprises multiple stages, each of which adds and encodes multiple bits (usually two) of two numbers x and y. Each stage comprises three blocks, a first carry generation block, a second carry generation block, and an output code generation block. The x input bits and y input bits are input into the first carry block, which generates a first carry out and multibit combination signal, which generally comprises the x input bits and y input bits carried straight through or only slightly modified. The combination signal and a first carry in signal are inputs to the second carry generation block. Generally, the first carry in is the is the first carry out of another stage which is combining less significant bits than the present stage. The second carry generation block generates a second carry out signal and a sum signal.

  • Patent number: 5815102
Abstract: A digital to analog (D/A) converter for hearing aids and the like includes a delta sigma modulator and a duty cycle demodulator. The delta sigma modulator converts medium rate, high resolution data into medium rate, medium resolution data, and the duty cycle demodulator converts the medium rate, medium resolution data into low resolution, high rate data. The duty cycle demodulator utilizes a lookup function to format the output data in a format having lowered transition rates, resulting in lower power use. The delta sigma converter may include a correction factor in at least one of its feedback loops to compensate for the characteristics of the output data from the duty cycle demodulator.

  • Patent number: 5806071
Abstract: A process for configuring electronic information for presentation at an interactive electronic device with which an item may be ordered, including the steps of: providing an original template presentation created at a first location to include a plurality of template items; providing a database to include a plurality of database items; and configuring, using a computer, the information to include each template item that is also a database item. A template data record can be associated with each template item, and a local data record can be associated with each database item. Additionally, a process for presenting display information at an interactive electronic device, including the step of configuring the display information for presentation by tagging as active for display, a cell associated with a template item that is also a database item. Different types of cells can be accommodated.

  • Patent number: 5800571
Abstract: A voluntary closing prosthetic prehensor includes a locking mechanism which may be locked into any position, and released with a small amount of force. With locking enabled, the prehensor opens and closes normally until the user applies sufficient tension to the prehensor cable after the prehensor has closed upon an object. Then, a lever arm attached to the cable rotates, pulling a second cable which causes an elliptical cam to rotate such that its wider portion presses against a pawl, causing the pawl to rotate into engagement with a toothed sector, locking the prehensor closed. When the user releases the force on the cable, the lever arm is biased to return to its normal position, but the prehensor stays closed because the pawl remains engaged with the sector. The cam includes a ratcheting drum which takes up the slack in the second cable. To release the prehensor, the user applies a small amount of force to the first cable, moving the lever arm and pulling the second cable, which rotates the cam.

  • Patent number: 5783816
Abstract: Hay bale measuring apparatus utilizes two measuring wheels for measuring the string used by the baler, and indicating the amount of string to a control and display unit. The baler operator sets the desired hay bale size and monitors the baler operation on the display. The control and display unit generates a signal which indicates to the baler when it is time to tie off a bale of hay. The measuring wheel includes a plurality of teeth and is used with an optical beam generator and optical beam detector. String is wrapped once around the wheel and turns the wheel as it is pulled by the baler. As the wheel turns, the teeth interrupt the beam from the beam generator, forming a series of bursts of light. The beam detector generates a burst of current coincident with each burst of light, and sends it to the control and display unit.

  • Patent number: 5753477
Abstract: The present invention discloses methods to transfect cells, comprising applying a strong magnetic field in pulses so as to affect a plurality of substance-carrying magnetic microparticles, the complexes being in physical proximity to a plurality of cells such that when the magnetic field is applied, the magnetic microparticles are pulled into the nuclei and/or cytoplasm of the cells.

  • Patent number: 5744742
Abstract: A parametric signal modeling musical tone synthesizer utilizes a multidimensional filter coefficient space consisting of many sets of filter coefficients to model an instrument. These sets are smoothly interpolated over pitch, intensity, and time. The filter excitation for a particular note is derived from a collection of single period excitations, which form a multidimensional excitation space, which is also smoothly interpolated over pitch, intensity and time. The synthesizer includes effective modeling of attacks of tones, and the noise component of a tone is modelled separately from the pitched component. The input control signals may include initial pitch and intensity, or the intensity may be time-varying. A variety of instruments may be specified.
