  • Patent number: 4120444
Abstract: A clip is disclosed which can secure a corner of a box formed from a blank of suitable material of which the margin is folded to constitute a peripheral wall for the box, the ends of the two adjacent wall portions overlapping at each of the corners of the box and therefore requiring a securing device at each corner such as the clip disclosed herein if the box is not to collapse. The clip is in the form of a bifurcated member of resilient but self supporting material, preferably plastics material such as polyethylene or polyurethane, the two furcations being connected by a head portion. One furcation is shorter than the other and is adapted to fit inside and along the corner of the box, whilst the other longer furcation is adapted to extend along and outside of the corner of the box with its free end terminating in a foot portion which is adapted to accommodate the corner of the base of the box.

  • Patent number: 4118695
Abstract: Character data is entered into a cathode ray tube display device from a keyboard or from a tape reader or the like selected by a key on the keyboard. The data is stored in a main memory inside the display device and simultaneously displayed on the cathode ray tube for composing and editing. An auxiliary memory is disposed between the display device and output devices such as tape punches so that data may transferred from the main memory of the display device into the auxiliary memory, and the data may be transferred from the auxiliary memory to the output devices while new data is being entered into the display device. Selected characters on the display, such as capitals, may be emphasized by displaying a dotted or solid line above or below the character or slanting the character. A cursor controlled by the keyboard is displayed on the cathode ray tube to indicate the position for entry or editing of data. Warning means are provide to give an indication when the cursor reaches the end of the display.

  • Patent number: 4115187
Abstract: Acid reactive mineral particles are treated by dissolving certain hydrophilic organic polymeric compounds in the interparticulate water of an aqueous dispersion of the mineral particles and adding an interacting chemical to insolubilize the polymeric material and thereby form stable particle plus polymer agglomerates having a decreased rate of attack by acid. The acid protected particle plus polymer agglomerates are formed with a paper furnish into a paper sheet. A particularly preferred mineral is calcium carbonate. Suitable polymeric compounds are starch, sodium alginate, casein and alkali- solubilized latices. Sometimes it may be advantageous to use organic polymeric compounds in combination with one another.

  • Patent number: 4109780
Abstract: A conveyor system for delivering articles in succession has an endless conveyor loop, which is guided by guide rollers around a closed path including a horizontally extending run having an upstream end and a downstream end. The guide roller at one end of the horizontally extending run of the closed path and a further guide roller in a part of the path other than the horizontally extending run are mounted on a support, which is pivoted by a reciprocating mechanism so as to cyclically extend and retract the horizontal run of the path at its one end while maintaining tension in the conveyor loop. A gate is located adjacent the upstream end of the horizontally extending run to provide a sequential flow of articles to such horizontally extending run.

  • Patent number: 4103222
Abstract: A detector for measuring relative movement and/or displacement between two relatively movable members comprises a linear array of steel balls, or other suitable longitudinal element of which the magnetic permeability varies cylically in a longitudinal direction, mounted on one of the members, and a transducer on the other member. The transducer is arranged to produce a magnetic field through the balls, preferably across the line thereof, and includes at least two pick-up coils spaced along the line of balls for sensing the variation in the magnetic field due to the presence of the balls, so that the relative spacing of the pick-up coils and the balls enable, on production of the magnetic field, the generation by the pick-up coils of output signals denoting the relative movement between the two members.

  • Patent number: 4100485
Abstract: A detector for measuring relative movement and/or displacement between two relatively movable members comprises a plurality of regularly shaped elements of magnetic material e.g. steel balls, periodically spaced along a path which is preferably linear, and a transducer which is movable relative to the elements in a direction parallel to said path. The transducer comprises a transmitter coil, or series of coils, disposed for producing a magnetic field parallel to said path, and at least two pick-up coils encasing the path and displaced along it. The pick-up coils sense the variation in the magnetic field due to the presence of the elements, so that the relative spacing of the pickup coils and the elements enable, on the production of the magnetic field, the generation by the pick-up coils of output signals denoting the relative movement between the members.

  • Patent number: 4074617
Abstract: A light metal piston for an engine or compressor has two sheet steel inserts. Each insert has two pairs of elongated bands extending circumferentially away from a gudgeon pin boss. The bands nearer the crown end of the piston skirt are longer than those nearer the open end of the skirt, and preferably are also wider, so as to exert greater thermal expansion control nearer the crown end of the skirt than nearer the open end.

  • Patent number: 4038526
Abstract: The disclosure of this invention pertains to a system for optimizing fuel consumption in an aircraft having two engines, wherein a computer is programmed to increase the fuel flow to the engine which, consequent upon a fuel flow perturbation, shows itself to be responsible for the greater acceleration of the aircraft. Direction changes resulting from unequal fuel flows to the engines are compensated for by automatic rudder control, and speed changes resulting from the fuel flow changes are compensated for by automatic speed control also acting on fuel flow, all whereby direction and speed of flight are maintained while fuel consumption is minimized.
