Abstract: An improvement is proposed, in a method for the preparation of a step-index silica glass preform as a precursor of optical fibers by completing the cladding layer of the secondary preform by the outer deposition on and around a primary preform consisting of the center core and side core, to conduct the outer deposition for the cladding layer in such a way that the inequality.vertline.d.lambda..sub.0 /dk.vertline..ltoreq.500 nmis satisfied, in which k is the ratio of the diameter of the primary preform to the diameter of the secondary preform and .lambda..sub.0 is the zero-dispersion wavelength in nm of an optical fiber obtained by drawing the secondary preform, d.lambda..sub.0 /dk being the differential of a function held between .lambda..sub.0 and k determined beforehand from the distribution of the refractive index within the primary preform.

Abstract: The invention concerns a sheet or a molding of a multi-phase thermoplastic, comprising an elastomer-modified thermoplastic, a modifier and other usual additives, whereby the elastomer-modified thermoplastic is an acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylic ester copolymer (ASA) having an acrylic ester proportion of about 25 to 80 percent by weight and the desired hardness or softness of the ASA is controlled by incorporating a modifier, whereby 1) an external plasticizer in the form of a) a monomeric or oligomeric plasticizer usual for plasticizing PVC and/or b) an amorphous or partially crystalline plasticizer having a crystallinity not greater than 25% is incorporated in the ASA copolymer to soften a hard ASA copolymer, whereby the mixing ratio (weight/weight) of hard elastomer-modified acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylic ester copolymer (ASA) to the external plasticizer is about 9:1 to 1:1, and 2) a polymer having sufficient compatibility with the ASA copolymer and an E-modulus of .gtoreq.2000 N/mm.sup.
Abstract: A method for preparation of a waterless lithographic printing plate by an electrophotographic process comprising forming a non-fixing toner image by an electrophotographic process using a liquid developer on a surface of an electrophotographic light-sensitive element, providing a peelable transfer layer (T) containing a thermoplastic resin (A) on the surface of electrophotographic light-sensitive element having the toner image, transferring the toner image together with the transfer layer (T) from the electrophotographic light-sensitive element onto a support for lithographic printing plate, providing on the transfer layer (T) bearing the toner image a non-tacky resin layer having adhesion to the transfer layer (T) larger than adhesion between the toner image and the non-tacky resin layer, and selectively removing the non-tacky resin layer provided on the toner image.
Abstract: A corner conveyor unit (6), for use in transferring movement from a conveyor operating in the direction A to another conveyor operating in the direction B, includes a plurality of frusto conical rollers (10) mounted for rotation between inner and outer curved walls (12, 14). A device is provided to urge the outermost frusto conical rollers in a separative direction, maintaining tension on the conveyor belt 16. A device is provided to restrain the conveyor belt (16) against movement in a direction C inwardly of the corner unit, the device including a plurality of roller assemblies (18) disposed around the outer edge region of the belt (16), each roller assembly (18) having a pair of roller members (20) engaged with upper and lower trackways (22, 24). Each trackway has an upper part and a lower part b, against which the upper and lower roller member (20) of each pair engage.
Abstract: The test range is provided with a calibration system for calibrating the exact position of a light curtain formed by a ballistic screen. The calibration system uses a model ball which can be moved through a light screen at high speed in order to simulate the actual passage of a driven golf ball through the light screen. Positioning of the model golf ball at a point at which the golf ball just contacts the light screen serves to determine the exact location of the light screen. A laser ranging device is used to locate the calibration system relative to a launch point. Thus, the precise distance of the curtain of light from the launch point can be readily determined. The calibration system may also be used to determine if a ballistic screen is mounted in a true vertical plane.

Abstract: An upper end of an outer pipe 16 is connected to a gutter, and a lower end of the outer pipe is connected to a water collecting box communicating with a sewer pipe. An inner pipe 18 which is arranged apart from an inner circumferential surface of a vertical portion 16d of the outer pipe at an outer circumferential edge of an upper portion thereof is connected to a storage-percolating box at a lower end thereof. A ring-like flow-separating piece 24 is disposed on an inner circumferential surface of the vertical portion of the outer pipe above an outer end of the inner pipe by a predetermined distance.
Abstract: An apparatus for automatically washing printing units of printing machines with finely perforated rollers, which includes: a hollow body that constitutes the washing water chamber and is anchored laterally and parallel to the color feed tube and has, at its base, a series of nozzles, which are directed towards the inside of the wedge-shaped suction chamber, and a series of similar nozzles which are directed towards the rear part of the suction chamber. A series of nozzles is associated with the color feed tube to direct the color towards the secondary rotating roller and to feed the washing water into the finely perforated roller when printing ends. The apparatus is also provided with wear-preventing pads between the rotating secondary roller and the suction chamber, with pads for axially retaining the secondary roller, and with a device for washing under pressure the opposite ends of the color feed tube, the tubular ends of the washing chamber, and the rings of the finely perforated roller.
Abstract: An electrode support in a multilayer cell, comprises an electrode material coating portion and an electrode lead portion which are formed integrally from a metal sheet, wherein a plurality of electrode lead portions are formed integrally with said metal sheet. In such electrode support, the process for joining each of the electrode lead portions is accomplished by folding the sheet in an extremely easy manner.
Abstract: The present invention is drawn to a criocthyrotomy tube insertion device which provides for the accurate delivery and placement of a cricothyrotomy tube. The force applied to insert the cricothyrotomy tube and the duration of the application of the force are predetermined to assure safe and accurate insertion of the cricothyrotomy tube. The device is easily positioned to ensure deliver of the cricothyrotomy tube in the crico-thyroid region.
Abstract: A process for making a container of heat-sealable plasticized sheet material, provided with a pouring spout and formed of a pair of facing walls having two side edges connected to each other by side walls folded to create side bellows. The process comprises the steps of sealing the upper edges of the facing walls so as to define an opening, of providing a small tube of a rigid material fitted with a flange that extend wider than the opening and that defines the spout and a thin cane, of inserting the thin cane into the container through the opening till the flange meets the border of the upper sealed edges, of folding said flange on the outer faces of the facing walls to cover the edges, and of tight sealing the flange to the edges.
Abstract: In a device for raster-stereographic measurement of body surfaces, preferably of irregularly shaped objects, in which a raster pattern having a plurality of raster lines is projected onto the surface according to the method of raster stereography by a raster projector and a line image which is distorted by the surface shape is recorded by means of a camera which forms a stereo base with the raster projector, the raster pattern having periodically recurring, particularly emphasized lines, where the order number of the lines can be deduced from the regular recurrence of these particularly emphasized lines, the raster pattern which is projected onto the surface contains locally modulated raster lines, wherein at least adjacent raster lines are clearly distinguished from one another.
Abstract: The wafer grinding machine uses a centrally located robot to move a wafer from an input station to a measuring station. Thereafter, the wafer is moved into a grind station and a wash station sequentially. The robot is able to move a wafer from the wash station to either the measuring station for after-grinding measurements or directly to an output station. During grinding of one wafer, a second wafer may be held between the measuring station and the grind station while a ground wafer is moved from the wash station to the measuring station for after-grinding measurements.

Abstract: A heat-sensitive resistive compound is formed by a mixture of particles of at least one electrically conducting material (A) in the solid state and of at least one resin (B) in the solid state; the mixture is dispersed in at least one liquid solvent (C); the percentage by weight of the electrically conducting material (A) with respect to the total weight of the anhydrous compound is 5% to 70%. The resistance of the compound after a furnace process increases, as the temperatures rises, in a substantially linear manner for temperatures that are approximately lower than or equal to 70.degree. C. and in a substantially exponential manner for temperatures that are approximately higher than 70.degree. C. The relative increase in the resistance of the compound with respect to its resistance at ambient temperature is at least 3 for temperatures higher than 100.degree. C. and at least 5 for temperatures above 115.degree. C.
Abstract: In a chemical analysis element cartridge, chemical analysis element pressing mechanism is inserted into a cartridge body to press a stack of chemical analysis elements in the cartridge body toward an element take-out port formed in one end of the cartridge body. The element pressing mechanism includes a stopper to be engaged with an engagement teeth formed on an inner wall surface of the cartridge body and a pressing member which presses the stack of the chemical analysis elements toward the element take-out port under the force of a coiled spring. The stopper has a slider member which is slidable relative to a shaft portion of the pressing member and the coiled spring is disposed around the slider member with its one end in abutment against the pressing member and its the other end retained by a spring retainer portion formed on one end of the slider member.
Abstract: Apparatus for high speed stacking and cutting of resilient materials to form individual sheets wherein the resilient material is moved through the apparatus towards a stacking plane and is guided past a tear separator actuatable to effect a tear separation along a transverse prepunched line. The tear separator comprises two pairs of respectively upper and lower rollers for friction contact with the sheets. One roller of the upper rollers is provided with a planar beveled portion and the lower rollers are essentially cylindrical, and at least one of the lower rollers is driven into rotation with a speed higher than that of the upper rollers. The lower rollers are spaced from each other in a rest condition when the beveled portion is parallely positioned in front of a plane of the connected sheets in the rest condition of the upper rollers.
Abstract: Proposed is a novel vessel such as crucibles made from PBN (pyrolytic boron nitride), which is highly resistant against exfoliation of the surface layer and suitable for use, for example, as a container of the melt in the Czochralski single crystal growing of III-V Group compound semiconductor single crystals with an improvement in the serviceable life. The PBN-made vessel of the invention is characterized by specific values of several parameters including density, which should be in the range from 1.90 to 2.05 g/cm.sup.3, intensity ratio of the X-ray diffraction peaks representing the degree of orientation, heat conductivity coefficient and the like. The above mentioned advantageous serviceable life of the vessel can be obtained only when these parameter values are satisfied.
Abstract: A pressure tolerant composite panel has an inner fiber reinforced layer, an outer fiber reinforced layer and an core disposed therebetween. In one embodiment of the invention, the inner layer has weakening structures incorporated at the peripheral edges thereof, and has an outer layer of a different and lower modulus of elasticity than the inner layer to provide some degree of elongation. When high internal forces are encountered, the weakening structures allow the inner layer to separate, with the outer layers stretching to absorb the forces without failure. Optionally, strengthening straps are position about the panel such that it is compartmentalized into discrete sections to contain damage in localized areas. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the inner core is produced of a crushable material which has a yield strength sufficient to provide structural support under normal operating conditions.
