  • Patent number: 4731208
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of removing binder materials from a shaped preform (green body) in the preparation procedure for the manufacture of ceramics from particulate materials. The new method comprises exposing the green body to a supercritical fluid to dissolve the binder materials in the supercritical fluid without deforming the shape of the article. In the method, the binder materials can be removed without swelling of the article because the green body is not exposed to a rapid temperature increase and the binder does not volatilize in the body. In addition, the binder material can be removed in a drastically shorter period of time from the entire body.

  • Patent number: 4726088
Abstract: The invention relates to a process and device for the wet treatment of textile material in hank form. The material travels in a circulating passage through an intensive treatment drawframe with subsequent folding-down, further conveying, and finally renewed feeding to the intensive treatment drawframe by a hank winding device. Circulating conveying of the treatment bath through the intensive treatment drawframe occurs while the textile material is passed through the horizontally arranged intensive treatment drawframe essentially at the same speed as the treatment bath. Such material is also under the action of the tensile force of a second hank winding device, which works at essentially the same conveying speed as the hank winding device upstream from the intensive treatment drawframe.

  • Patent number: 4722481
Abstract: Several embodiments of drip emitters are disclosed. These embodiments comprise (1) a molded plastic, body with an upwardly opening housing, and (2) a molded plastic plug including an enlarged head, a depending shank, and a helical thread defined about the perimeter of the shank. The body is executed in a relatively soft plastic, while the plug is executed in a harder plastic. The shank of the plug is press-fitted into the housing, and the threads on the shank of the plug cut into the softer plastic of the housing. By advancing or retracting the plug, the length of the helical flow path is altered and the rate of discharge of droplets from the emitter is changed to account for changes in line pressure, accumulation of debris in the emitter, and other operational parameters.

  • Patent number: 4721627
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for refining foodstuffs, and to plant for the implementation of such a process. The basic process is one in which foodstuff is fed into a depressurized environment and refined therein, whereupon the refined end-product, and any waste matter separated during the process, are both drawn off. Plant for the purpose substantially comprises an environment in which a vacuum is created and maintained, such as will house conventional types of machinery which refine the foodstuff, separate any waste matter, and collect the end-product which is then drawn off by a pump. Such a process and plant serve in particular for extracting juice and puree from fruit, vegetable, and market garden produce in general, as well as for reducing meat of all kinds to a paste.

  • Patent number: 4718314
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a power tongs, including a rotary head and a circular plate loosely mounted on the head, with a flexible member secured at one end to the plate. The flexible member is wrapped around the pipe to be torqued and the free end of the member is tensioned around the pipe by means of a lever that is pivotally supported on the plate, the lever having an outwardly extending arm that is engaged by a pin extending upward from the rotary head as the tongs are operated. The flexible member distributes radial loads over the surface of the pipe to prevent crushing of the pipe and damage to its surface.

  • Patent number: 4709414
Abstract: An order wire system which can be used during installation and maintenance of an optical fiber communication system comprises an optical fiber order wire to which engineers can connect at remote sites communication sets each of which includes a microphone and earphone allowing the engineers to communicate with each other. Full duplex and multi-party operation can be achieved with the sets according to the invention and, because the signals are regenerated, the range of operation is considerable. Both analog and digital communication is contemplated and different specific circuits are proposed. In a typical analog configuration, the microphone output is fed to first and second frequency modulators operating respectively at first f.sub.1 and second f.sub.2 center frequencies. The outputs of the modulators are summed and passed to a laser driver and laser which is optically coupled both to the upstream and the downstream side of the order wire.

  • Patent number: 4687115
Abstract: The method for rendering wines sparkling is characterized by forming a dreg collection chamber inside the stopper, keeping said chamber in communication with the bottle interior during the dreg removal stage when the bottle is inverted or inclined, in order to enable the dregs to enter the stopper and, on termination of this stage or in any case before placing the bottle the right way up, interrupting communication between the dreg collection chamber and the bottle interior by acting from the outside, and so retaining said dregs in said chamber. To implement this method, the invention provides for the use of a plastic stopper characterized by comprising a first element which can be securely fitted to the bottle neck and contains an internal cavity, and a second element which is mobile relative to said first element in order, as a result of its movement, to open and close the dreg collection chamber provided in the interior of said second element and/or of said first element.

  • Patent number: 4684555
Abstract: A dental retention pin preferably made of metal is provided with a closed, cylindrical coating of bond assisting material, and an additional layer of a plastics filling material in order to obtain a physical-chemical or a purely chemical bond between the retention pin and the filling structure for obtaining a substantially increased retention power compared with known metal pins, which merely result in a mechanical or mechanical-physical joint to the filling structure. The retention force will be increased by shrinking the bond assisting layer or the outermost plastics layer onto said bond assisting layer around the pin so that the layer spans itself around the pin in a ring-like manner. Furthermore, examples for the structure of a retention pin are described, which improve the handling and insertion of such retention pins by the dentist considerably.

  • Patent number: 4679469
Abstract: A control system for power tongs comprises two tongs torque limiters, one of which limits tongs torque to a very low (hand-tight) level; the other limits torque at full make-up to, for example, 2000 ft.-lbs. The hand-tight torque limiter is manually or automatically disabled after the hand-tight level is reached. The system enables the operator to verify that the threads are properly engaged before applying full torque to the connection. The tongs have a very high reduction ratio, so that torque rises very slowly and can be more accurately controlled. The high torque limiter includes a normally closed shunt valve in series with an adjustable choke, the latter of which enables one to maintain a substantial, adjustable, residual torque on the pipe even after the shunt valve opens.

  • Patent number: 4678268
Abstract: The method for constructing microlens ends for optical fibres, particularly for biomedical and/or surgical use, is characterised by propagating in the optical fibre a radiation of the type used during the application of the fibre itself, and to which said fibre is transparent, and converting the wavelength of the radiation, outside to the fibre and in proximity to its output end, which has been previously cut along a plane orthogonal to its axis, into a band of wavelengths which can be absorbed by the fibre, for a time sufficient to cause localized fusion of the end.
