  • Patent number: 6472214
Abstract: A device composed of (1) a color changing indicator, (2) an optional polymeric binder, preferably having gel forming capability, and (3) an activator solvent system which induces a color change in the indicator when device is frozen, in the region of about 0 to −30° C. An example of the device is an indicator of a fine dispersion of partially polymerized diacetylene of the formula: R—C═C—C═C—R, where R is a substituent group, e.g., 4BCMU where R=—(CH2)OCONHCH2COO(CH2)4H, dispersed in a mixture of solvents, e.g., 96:4 water:ED (ethylene glycol diacetate), with or without a polymeric binder. When the temperature of the device is lowered to the freezing point of water, the activator solvent phase separates out of the mixture and induces a color change in the indicator. The device can undergo an irreversible color change, e.g., from blue to red, when the activator mixture is frozen in the region of about 0 to 30° C.

  • Patent number: 6468075
Abstract: Cement clinker production apparatus having a precalcination stage connected upstream of a rotary kiln, in which precalcination stage a CO-containing reduction zone in the rotary kiln off-gas duct is employed for the purpose of reducing the pollutant NOx. In order to make certain that the quantitative ratio of O2 in the rotary kiln off-gas to fuel admitted by a deNOx burner, and thus control the effectiveness of NOx reduction, a pivoting throttle valve (33) is positioned in the precalcination stage to control the quantity of rotary kiln off-gas and thus the O2 content in the kiln off-gas. The throttle valve (33) is positioned in the rotary kiln off-gas duct (15) above the deNOx burner (19), above the raw meal inlet (13), and before the confluence of the tertiary air substream with the rotary kiln off gas.

  • Patent number: 6461153
Abstract: A system for the manufacture of cement clinker from cement raw meal in which the off-gases of the cement clinker production line not only undergo denitrification but also undergo desulfurization, so that even sulfur-rich raw materials and fuels can be employed without exceeding the prevailing pollutant emission limits. A substream of the oversize material (30) discharged from the mixing chamber (29) of the precalcination stage (16) as solid sorbent may be combined with the off-gas (22) and/or with a partial gas discharge (38) of the rotary kiln off-gas in order to convert the sulfur oxides contained in those off-gases to calcium sulfate (34), which is subsequently separated from the system off-gas.

  • Patent number: 6459252
Abstract: A phasing voltmeter having a high impedance AC voltmeter in series with two high impedance probes. Shielding surrounds and electrically isolates the voltmeter and probes. In parallel with the voltmeter and connected electrically with the shielding is an electrical circuit designed to add the capacitive current to a current detected by the probes. The capacitive current is added in such a way that the net effect on the measured current is zero. The electrical circuit comprises two impedance elements, such as resistors, that meet at a junction where they are connected to the shielding. The impedances on either side of the junction are matched either by careful selection of the elements or by selection of adjustable elements so that the junction is a null point.

  • Patent number: 6460009
Abstract: A system that is adapted for determining the delay time between an initiating event and a response to that event. The system includes an optical sensor which is preferably a photo resistor having a resistance inversely proportional to the intensity of a warning light in its proximity. The output of the photo resistor is an analog signal that can be fed to an analog input device such as a strip chart recorder for display versus time. The initiating event signal can also be displayed so that, by comparing the signals, the delay between the initiating event and the changing of the warning light from off to on can be measured and compared to a specified value.

  • Patent number: 6450667
Abstract: A lighting system comprising a reflector and an arc lamp designed for illuminating a wide area with an even light distribution. The reflector has a cap that is generally parabolic in shape except perhaps at its top where it supports an arc lamp. The arc lamp is preferably a high intensity sodium or mercury vapor lamp with a vertical arc tube mounted so that the lowermost part of the arc tube is positioned to be even with the lowermost edge of the cap. • Patent number: 6448299
Abstract: A method for regenerating strong-base anion exchange resins utilizing a sequential chemical displacement technique with new regenerant formulation. The new first regenerant solution is composed of a mixture of ferric chloride, a water-miscible organic solvent, hydrochloric acid, and water in which tetrachloroferrate anion is formed and used to displace the target anions on the resin. The second regenerant is composed of a dilute hydrochloric acid and is used to decompose tetrachloroferrate and elute ferric ions, thereby regenerating the resin. Alternative chemical displacement methods include: (1) displacement of target anions with fluoroborate followed by nitrate or salicylate and (2) displacement of target anions with salicylate followed by dilute hydrochloric acid. The methodology offers an improved regeneration efficiency, recovery, and waste minimization over the conventional displacement technique using sodium chloride (or a brine) or alkali metal hydroxide.

  • Patent number: 6443709
Abstract: An oscillating spring valve fluid pumping system for use in a flowing stream of fluid comprises a spring valve, check valve and a housing with inlet and two outlets, one outlet for each valve. As fluid enters the system, it is directed to a spring valve which is biased in the open position by a first spring. Fluid passing by the spring valve exits the housing from one of the outlets and returns to the stream. When a predetermined amount of pressure is reached, the spring valve closes thus creating a back pressure and redirecting the fluid through a check valve mechanism to relieve that pressure. Fluid passing the check valve escapes through one of the outlets for distribution by the user. Concurrently, the pressure at the spring valve is reduced thereby causing the spring valve to open against a second spring. As fluid continues to enter the system, the spring valve repeatedly oscillates thus producing an increased pressure head at the system outlet.
