Abstract: A novel system and method of Reduced-Temporal-Resolution Update (RTRU) and quantizing video transform coefficients is provided for use using hybrid coding standards when receiving a frame from within a group of video frames, where the amplitude of the quantization parameter is defined for the quantization of the frame according to a reduced temporal resolution update process; where the amplitude of the quantization parameter for macroblocks in the frame is defined according to a reduced temporal resolution update process; and where a bitstream is composed for transmission and subsequent decoding by a standard compliant decoder.
Abstract: In some embodiments, a motion estimation search window cache is adaptively re-organized according to frame properties including a frame width and a number of reference frames corresponding to the current frame to be encoded/decoded. The cache reorganization may include an adaptive mapping of reference frame locations to search window cache allocation units (addresses). In some embodiments, a search window is shaped as a quasi-rectangle with truncated upper left and lower right corners, having a full-frame horizontal extent. A search range is defined in a central region of the search window, and is laterally bounded by the truncated corners.

Abstract: An access device is described herein for determining and selecting, for a cellular call received by a cellular transceiver of the access device, one of a plurality of networks to route the call to. Abstract: Disclosed are systems and methods for improving the thermal performance of integrated circuit packages. Aspects of the present invention include improved thermal package structures and methods for producing the same through the application of one or more thermal spreaders in the package. In embodiments, a thermal spreader is incorporated in a semiconductor chip package between a semiconductor die and its die pad. By including a thermal spreader in an IC package, the package can handle higher levels of power while maintaining approximately the same temperature of the package or can reduce the temperature of the package when operating at the same power level, as compared to a package without a thermal spreader.
Abstract: A light management unit (LMU) includes multiple brightness compensation modules and algorithms mixed together in a digital domain. The LMU is configured to receive content data, such as gamma correction data generated by a graphics or video processor and corresponding to frames of video data, ambient light data obtained using a light sensor, ambient temperature data using a temperature sensor, and a manual brightness setting. An ambient light compensation value is multiplied into the manual brightness settings so the resulting compensation value is a percent of the manual settings. A content adjustment interface (CAI) module is configured to compensate the backlight brightness according to real-time video data. The content adjustment performed by the CAI module is combined with the ambient light adaptive dimming. A final stage step generator enables a gradual brightness transition to minimize, if not eliminate jitter and jump.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide systems, devices and methods for detecting both ambient light and proximity to an object. This detection is performed by a double-layered photodiode array and corresponding circuitry such that ambient light and proximity detection are enabled by a plurality of integrated photodiodes. In various embodiments of the invention, ambient light is sensed using a first set of photodiodes and a second set of photodiodes such that a spectral response is created that is approximately equal to the visible light spectrum. Proximity detection is realized using an integrated photodiode, positioned below the first and second sets of photodiodes, that detects infrared light and generates a response thereto.
Abstract: A bump contact electrically connects a conductor on a substrate and a contact pad on a semiconductor device mounted to the substrate. The first end of an electrically conductive pillar effects electrical contact and mechanical attachment of the pillar to the contact pad with the pillar projecting outwardly from the semiconductor device. A solder crown reflowable at a predetermined temperature into effecting electrical contact and mechanical attachment with the conductor is positioned in axial alignment with the second end of the pillar. A diffusion barrier electrically and mechanically joins the solder bump to the second end of the pillar and resists electro-migration into the first end of the solder crown of copper from the pillar. One diffusion barrier takes the form of a 2-20 micron thick control layer of nickel, palladium, titanium-tungsten, nickel-vanadium, or tantalum nitride positioned between the pillar and the solder crown.
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention determine skew relative to a plurality of communication paths on a network system. The network is a wavelength division multiplexed optical transport network. The plurality of communication paths involves different signal and path attributes such as a plurality of carrier wavelengths, optical carrier groups, physical communication paths (different nodes, different fibers along a same path, or any combination of the foregoing), or any other differentiating factors between two paths.

Abstract: An apparatus including a first circuit and a second circuit. The first circuit may be configured to generate a first control signal, a second control signal and a third control signal in response to a first interlaced video signal. The second circuit may be configured to generate a second interlaced video signal in response to the first interlaced video signal, the first control signal, the second control signal and the third control signal. The second circuit may be further configured to vertically scale the first interlaced video signal in an extended vertical domain.
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide systems, devices and methods for managing skew within a polarized multi-channel optical transport system. In a DP-QPSK system, skew between polarized channels is compensated within the transport system by adding latency to at least one of the polarized channels. The amount of added latency may depend on various factors including the skew tolerance of the transport system and the amount of skew across the channels without compensation. This latency may be added optically or electrically, and at various locations on a channel signal path within a transport node, such as a terminal transmitter or receiver. Additionally, various embodiments of the invention provide for novel methods of inserting frame alignment bit sequences within the transport frame overhead so that alignment and skew compensation may be more efficiently and accurately performed at the transport receiver.
Abstract: A system, apparatus and a method are described for providing efficient software distribution and cache management on a plurality of client machines in a network. In one embodiment of the invention, a cache management software agent is installed on one or more client machines to monitor a status of software versions stored locally on the machines. The cache management software agent performs a check before uploading a matching version of a large software application from a network element in order to determine whether the upload is appropriate. In particular, the agent identifies whether a matching version of the application is already present on the client machine to see if the upload is necessary. If a matching version of the application is not resident on the machine, then the latest version of the large software application is uploaded to the client machine from the network element.
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide RFID systems having a centralized frequency source and controller. The centralized frequency source generates a reference signal, having a frequency below the RF band of interest, which is transmitted to a plurality of reader nodes. The centralized controller generates and transmits data to the plurality of reader nodes. At each reader node, the reference signal is converted to an RF carrier signal that is modulated and transmitted within corresponding read field of the reader node. This modulated RF carrier signal may interrogate and communicate with one or more RFID tags within this read field. The RF carrier signal may also be held constant to enable communication from RFID tags to the reader node, which is subsequently transmitted back to the centralized controller or processor.
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention route a wavelength division multiplexed signal across multiple communication paths using skew characteristics of at least some of the communication paths.
