  • Patent number: 5161382
Abstract: Apparatus for producing low temperature refrigeration comprising a refrigeration sub-system for circulating a first refrigerant to provide alternately two outputs for different time periods including a first output at a relatively warm temperature level and a second output at a relatively cold temperature level. The sub-system outputs are furnished to a cryosorption pumping circuit comprised of a closed loop conduit for a second refrigerant and connected to a plurality of sorbent beds which cause cyclic adsorption and desorption of the second refrigerant material. External conditioning utilizing the first refrigerant is used to cause further temperature reduction of said second refrigerant in the closed loop conduit of the cryosorption pumping circuit.

  • Patent number: 5160472
Abstract: Method of producing a single-phase composite structure of filamentary and non-filamentary semicrystalline morphology made from the same polymer, which is of a type capable of gelling in a suitable solvent and of being deformed into a high-modulus, high-strength product. Layers of the polymer in sheet form are interleaved with at least one layer, also of that polymer, made from filaments thereof. The method of making the product may involve heating a sheet of UHMWPE or other polymer gel (5% UHMWPE in 95% paraffin oil, by weight) to 125.degree. C., applying a knitted UHMWPE high modulus, high-strength structure on one side thereof, extracting the non-volatile paraffin oil therefrom with hexane, and evaporating the hexane.

  • Patent number: 5154828
Abstract: A filter aid material and a method for using same in a filtration system for reclaiming and maintaining coolant oil used in aluminum rolling or working processes are disclosed. The filter aid is a fibrous material which is permeated with an acid material and may be provided in either particulate form as a body feed or as a compressed filter pad. As contamined oil flows through the filter aid, the acid acts chemically to remove aluminum fines and oxides as well as the aluminum portion of contaminating soap in the coolant oil. Use of the filter aid with acid greatly reduces the amount of conventional filter aid previously used and produces a relatively small amount of residual filter aid which can be disposed of by incineration.

  • Patent number: 5140670
Abstract: A novel class of information-processing systems called a cellular neural network is discussed. Like a neural network, it is a large-scale nonlinear analog circuit which processes signals in real time. Like cellular automata, it is made of a massive aggregate of regularly spaced circuit clones, called cells, which communicate with each other directly only through its nearest neighbors. Each cell is made of a linear capacitor, a nonlinear voltage-controlled current source, and a few resistive linear circuit elements. Cellular neural networks share the best features of both worlds; its continuous time feature allows real-time signal processing found within the digital domain and its local interconnection feature makes it tailor made for VLSI implementation. Cellular neural networks are uniquely suited for high-speed parallel signal processing.

  • Patent number: 5134961
Abstract: An electrically-actuated liquid spraying system for controlling the volumetric flow through pressure-atomization spray nozzles is disclosed. Each nozzle is attached to a direct acting, in-line solenoid valve which is connected to a liquid supply at constant pressure. The valve is excited by square wave pulses of variable frequency and duty cycle to reciprocate between its fully open and closed positions and thereby control the flowrate over a range without changing droplet size and spray pattern. The frequency and duty cycle of the square wave pulses are varied and controlled by feedback data of relative target movement, size, shape and other factors as well as by gated sampling of the dynamic pressure in a region between the valve seat and nozzle orifice.

  • Patent number: 5129262
Abstract: An ultrasonic sensor which has a thin planar sheet of material forming a Lamb wave propagation medium, the sheet having a thickness which is no greater than about twenty microns. The sensor also includes a Lamb wave generator for generating Lamb waves in the propagation medium and an output device for producing an electrical signal representative of the propagation characteristics of the Lamb waves propagating along the propagation medium. A measuring device is included in the sensor to measure selected characteristics of the output electrical signal. The propagation medium has some physical characteristics that are determined by the value of a measurand acting on the medium and the determined physical characteristics determine the propagation characteristics of the Lamb waves which are propagated along the medium. When the sensor is acted on by a measurand to determine the physical characteristics of the propagation medium, the characteristics of the electrical signal are also determined.

  • Patent number: 5115625
Abstract: A machine and a method for folding bottom flaps of a box after or in coordination with box loading where all of the activities take place along one axis. The arrangement of all elements along the axis provides improved accessibility to facilitate clearing and servicing the machine. Precise indexing moves the boxes with a smooth cycling transfer motion from station to station in the machine as product in the box is supported and the bottom flaps of the box are folded under the product. The folding of the box's bottom minor trailing flap is accomplished by a three piece mechanism which supports the product in the box and closes this flap. The in-line arrangement permits easy adjustment of the machine for different size boxes. Threaded rods which are connected by chains, chain sprockets, unit rate gear boxes, half rate gear boxes, and shafts which move relevant operating elements to easily adjust the machine's box guide dimensions.

  • Patent number: 5114403
Abstract: A torque control mechanism for a medical catheter, comprising a torque wire affixed to a tip of the catheter, and attached to a rotation control mechanism carried by a proximal end of the catheter. The torque wire has high torsional stiffness but longitudinal flexibility, so that rotation of the torque wire is efficiently transmitted to the catheter tip, but so that the torque wire may flex easily as the catheter is put into place adjacent a treatment site within a patient. The catheter tip includes a guide wire lumen for sliding over a conventional guide wire in emplacing the catheter, and rotation of the torque wire causes the catheter tip to rotate about an axis of the guide wire. However, when high friction is encountered by the catheter, rotation of the torque wire causes rotation of the catheter tip about a central axis of the catheter. This is assisted by the configuration of a preferred embodiment, wherein the catheter tip is rotatable separately from the catheter body.

  • Patent number: 5107699
Abstract: A volumetric leak detector. An overfilled storage tank has at its upper end a fill pipe predetermined surface area. An area converter reservoir is connected at this upper end with the storage tank, so that some liquid from the fill pipe flows into the reservoir. The area converter reservoir has a surface area which is larger than the surface area of the fill pipe. An almost constant minimum level is provided in the area converter reservoir, and the height difference between that minimal level and the actual level of the tank are as determined.

  • Patent number: 5099755
Abstract: A machine for cutting generally oblong, compressed bales of dried hay or forage for livestock, comprises an inlet chute for receiving compressed bales in end-to-end alignment and moving them forwardly into a sawing section. The latter has side walls, a floor for supporting a bale as it moves through the sawing section and a horizontal top member parallel with and spaced above the floor. A plurality of circular saws are spaced apart on a pair of upper and lower shafts, each saw on one said shaft being vertically aligned with a saw on the other shaft. The saw shafts are connected by a pulley and driven by a rotary power source. A hydraulic pump connected to one of the saw shafts is utilized to drive hydraulic motors for moving bales through the sawing section.
