Abstract: The variable valve operating mechanism comprises lower and upper rocker arms, each having a straight section and a curved cam section. The lower rocker arm is mounted for pivotal movement about a fixed axis and the upper rocker arm is mounted for pivotal movement about a shiftable axis. The free end of the lower rocker arm engages the valve to be actuated and the free end of the upper rocker arm engages the straight section of the first rocker arm when the shiftable axis is spaced relatively far from the fixed axis. When the shiftable axis is moved toward the fixed axis, the valve lift starts to increase. Continued movement, however, causes the engine's cam to engage the curved cam section of the upper rocker arm to lengthen the duration or time that the valve is open. In this way, valve lift and the duration of time that the valve remains open can be controlled in accordance with certain engine operating conditions.
Abstract: A picture displaying frame having a front viewing window, a rear wall behind the displayed picture, a slot along the bottom edge, a swing out prop in the rear wall for standing the frame in upright position, a picture transporting slider in the prop with a picture engaging retentive element to frictionally engage the picture for sliding it out of the slot.
Abstract: This invention relates to an attachment for the dipper stick of a backhoe and more particularly relates to a grapple rake for mounting on the end of the dipper stick.
Abstract: A tool for forming a lateral opening in a tube comprises an assembly which can be inserted longitudinally into a tube until it lies opposite to an opening (12) through which an operating member (44) can be passed for operative engagement with the assembly at 46. The assembly includes a wedge member (16) with wedge surfaces (22) extending symmetrically in relation to the direction of motion of the operating member (44). Two spreader bodies (28,30) are mounted on the wedge member (16) and after initial insertion of the tool the operating member acts to displace the wedge member and hence the spreader body so that it contacts and deforms the interior of the pipe. Complete withdrawal of the tool through the opening (12) deforms the metal surrounding the opening and after a suitable finishing process another tube can be welded at right angles to the first mentioned tube to form a T-piece.
Abstract: A sealed housing having entrance and exit ports at its upper and lower surfaces for connection into a vertically extending gravity spout, with a collecting head mounted within the housing for swinging movement across the central flow passage extending from the entrance port to the exit port. The collecting head has an elongate opening confronting the entrance port, such that particulate matter flowing through the housing will be collected within the interior of the collecting head and passed out of the housing through a discharge tube, for sampling. Rotary air cylinders disposed on top of the sealed housing adjacent the entrance port effect swinging movement of the collecting head about an axis parallel to that of the central flow passage, such that the collecting head passes entirely through the particulate flow, from one side of the product stream to the other, thereby assuring a representative sample.
Abstract: A cutter for ribbed sheet metal building panels wherein anvil blocks are mounted on the base table adjacent the shear edge of the base table which normally cooperates with the cutting edge of the swinging shear blade. The anvil blocks define sharp cornered oblique cutting edges shaped according to the shape of the ribs of the sheet metal panel; and the anvil blocks have obliquely oriented fore and aft sides to prevent interfering with the ribs when the sheet metal panels are obliquely oriented with respect to the shearing edge of the base table.
Abstract: The data processing system makes use of a holographic optical element comprised of a number of facets, each facet containing a grating pattern for diffractively redistributing input light so that output light from a facet or a combination of facets represents encoded mathematical data.

Abstract: The apparatus includes a mobile chassis having a turntable on which is supported a boom assembly. At the free end of the boom assembly is tiltably mounted a forklift carriage which can be extended and retracted relative to the boom assembly.
Abstract: A grapple shear having a lower jaw with three widely spaced forwardly projecting tines, the outer tines having upper ends mounting the upper jaw with a pair of tines to swing into interleaving relation with the tines of the lower jaw, the outer tines of the lower jaw having forwardly opening angular bights, a swingable shear blade on the central tine of the lower jaw which carries an upright mast and a hydraulic ram on the top of the mast and driving the shear blade downwardly in a cutting motion.
Abstract: A poultry nest and egg collecting apparatus of improved reliability with respect to maintaining the sterility of the shells of eggs which includes a nesting chamber having an open front and a lower nesting surface that is provided with a rearwardly facing egg discharging portion at a higher level than the open front of the nest and is configured to provide a receptacle for receiving and maintaining suitably treated litter of nesting material to improve the sterile characteristics of the nesting environment.
Abstract: The pipe-bending core consists of elements which are coupled to one another in articulated manner and threaded like a string of pearls on a wire cable, and which are expanded on being pushed against one another, but nevertheless remain articulated. The principle can be applied to pipes of differing cross-section. After releasing the bracing arrangment, the elements contract again by means of spring bias, so that the core can easily be withdrawn from the bent pipe.
Abstract: An animal feeding apparatus includes a bunk, or trough for receiving solid feed and water and animal actuated hopper means disposed over the trough. The water dispensing function is provided by a plurality of valves having operators to be actuated, preferably, by the snout of an animal and which are configured and disposed to inhibit actuation by the animal at such times as the level of liquid in the bunk exceeds a predetermined depth. The feed dispensing function is provided by the simultaneous actuation of an elongated agitator, disposed on one side wall of the hopper and in a dispensing slot in the bottom of the hopper, and a grate, disposed above the agitator and adjacent the slot and the opposite side wall of the hopper, by an agitator arm connected to the agitator and the grate, and extending downwardly into the bunk for actuation by an animal. The agitator and the grate are pivotable about a common axis to provide different radii of oscillation.
