Abstract: An improved process for the high speed production of structural preforms and molding the preform to produce a product having desired and predetermined fiber directionality and distribution. Continuous strand glass fiber is directly applied to a preform screen along with a resinous binder material. The fiber/binder composite preform is cured. The cured composite preform is transferred to a mold where the composite is injected with a resin and thereafter cured in the mold.
Abstract: A strand deflector widens the band of fibers from a continuous strand mat pull wheel. The strand deflector defines a plate having a surface with discontinuities such as a pattern of transverse parallel grooves or oblique intersecting grooves. The plate is disposed below the pull wheel and is coupled to and oscillates with the spoked wheel disposed within the pull wheel. The band of fibers impinges upon the plate at a acute angle and is deflected, broadening the width of the band, typically from four to five inches to ten to twenty inches. Higher throughputs and faster line speeds are thus possible for continuous strand mat production lines.
Abstract: A reservoir for leak detecting fluid for a tank is disclosed. A reservoir is used with a double wall glass fiber reinforced plastic tank where the tank has an inner wall, an outer wall, and annular space between the inner and outer walls for receiving a leak detecting fluid and an enclosed space within the inner wall for the storage of a liquid. An opening is provided in the outer wall of the tank and the opening is in communication with the annular space between the inner and outer walls. A one-piece reinforced plastic reservoir for leak detecting fluid is positioned on the tank. The reservoir has a sidewall and an end wall extending across one end of the sidewall. The sidewall is secured to the outer wall of the tank with the interior of the reservoir being in alignment with the opening in the outer wall of the tank.
Abstract: A resin compatible size composition for glass fibers having a small fiber diameter is disclosed. The size contains a film former, a nonionic lubricant, a cationic lubricant, at least one silane coupling agent and at least one acid, such as acetic or citric acid. The sized glass fibers are compatible with epoxy and polyester resins and are useful in producing yarns which are then braided, twisted or woven to form structural reinforcements.
Abstract: A process is provided for manufacturing ballistic resistant composites of an isophthalic thermoset polyester and woven roving made of magnesia aluminosilicate glass fibers. An impregnating solution is provided whereby pregregs can be conveniently formed and then vacuum bag molded. The ingredients in the impregnating solution are critically selected to provide prescribed viscosities after the elapse of certain periods of time and thereby allow the final articles to be formed in an economical and expedient manner.

Abstract: Improved reinforced plastic tanks and novel mandrel processes for producing them are disclosed. One aspect of the invention is concerned with an external support rib and a method for producing it. According to the invention, the rib is fabricated on a hollow rib form secured to the exterior of a tank with resilient netting and thread. The structure comprises chopped fibers and a resin which does not require a source of external heat to cure. The tank with the rib form secured to it is rotated as the lay-up is applied. Netting and threads are supplied to the rib form and they wrap around the rib lay-up and hold it in place until it cures. Also disclosed is a method for producing a double wall tank incorporating the novel rib. According to this aspect of the invention, the ribs are cured until they are at least tacky. Then, thin flexible panels are wrapped around the outside of the ribs and held in place by a wrap.

Abstract: A method of making textile glass fibers in a rotary process is disclosed. A spinner bearing molten glass rotates on its axis of rotation. Glass is forced through orifices and the resulting fibers are moved along paths generally perpendicular to the axis of rotation. Prior to commingling or turn down of the fibers a quenching liquid is applied to the fibers.
Abstract: According to this invention, there is provided a reinforcement blanket having a plurality of layers of fiber-reinforcement materials sewn together. The sewing together of the various layers of the fiber-reinforcement materials provides a plurality of channels extending through the reinforcement blanket. The reinforcement blanket can be shaped into a preform or can be used directly as a reinforcement in a molding process. The channels in the reinforcement blanket aid in distributing a matrix resin during an impregnation process.
Abstract: The present invention provides a multi-purpose collection system for use in the simultaneous manufacture of loose fibrous mineral material and insulation blankets or mats from the forming machine. The loose fibrous mineral material is directly intercepted from the fiberizer units of the forming machine and requires no post-processing steps other than separation and packaging.
Abstract: Cobalt based alloys which include chromium, nickel, tungsten, tantalum, zirconium, carbon and boron are provided which are suitable for forming spinners to be used in forming glass fibers. The alloys contain critically important amounts of carbon which maximizes the stress rupture life of the spinner alloy and minimizes the creep rate thereby making the alloy outstandingly adapted for glass manufacture.
Abstract: A process for forming a continuous strand preformable mat is disclosed which consists of applying a binder matrix material which includes a thermosetting polyester binder material and a thermoplastic polyester binder to the continuous strand mat. The mat is heated such that the thermosetting binder material cures and hardens while the thermoplastic binder material softens and flows around strand intersections. The mat is thereafter cooled in order to solidify the thermoplastic polyester material of the binder matrix for additional handling for packaging and for subsequent handling by the customer. The preforms are made by heating the mat to over 200.degree. F., placing in a cold mold, and then closing the mold to form and solidify the mat shape.
Abstract: The invention is an improved compression member for use in the packaging of insulation material. The compression member includes a plurality of curvilinear finger members defining a plurality of voids extending in the machine direction of the insulation material. The finger members and defined voids enhance the compression operation by encouraging an even release of compressed air across the width of the insulation pack and by guiding the insulation material into the packaging apparatus in a desired orientation.
Abstract: A double crucible fiberizing apparatus and process for producing a continuous glass filament having a core fluoride-containing glass concentrically surrounded by a clad fluoride-containing glass at increased throughput speeds while simultaneously achieving increased length and uniform filament diameter are disclosed.
Abstract: A method of fabricating a glass fiber forming feeder is provided comprising positioning a refractory metal core between oxygen impervious, precious metal layers to form a pre-laminate unit, said core having apertures extending therethrough; cold isostatically pressing said unit to move a portion of said layers into said apertures into intimate contact with substantially all of the core defining said apertures; and then hot isostatically pressing said unit to intimately bond said precious metal layers to said core including the portion core defining said apertures to form said laminate to prevent the oxidation of said core at elevated temperatures.
Abstract: Method and apparatus to apply a coating or coatings of a predetermined thickness over designated sections of a continously advanced elongate member by means of cooperating guide die and coating die segments. The die includes two abutting members through which, the article to be coated, passes the first member defining a guide passage and the second being in the form of a collar defining a coating groove for distributing the coating material and limiting its thickness. Since the two parts are separable cleaning is facilitated.
