Abstract: A method for inhibiting dental calculus concomitant with tooth whitening is disclosed wherein there is applied to the teeth an oral composition containing in a vehicle an amount of a anticalculus phosphate salt and an amount of calcium peroxide effective to whiten teeth, the vehicle containing about 4 to about 9% by weight water and an amount of calcined alumina effective to heighten the whitening effect of the CaO2, and allowing the composition to remain on the teeth for a time sufficient to effect whitening thereof.

Abstract: A two component desensitizing dentifrice composition is disclosed which comprises a first dentifrice component containing a desensitizing potassium salt such as potassium nitrate and a second dentifrice component containing a second desensitizing agent other than a potassium salt the such as SnF.sub.2, the second desensitizing agent being incompatible with the potassium salt, the first and second dentifrice components being maintained separate from the other until dispensed for application to teeth requiring relief from dentine hypersensitivity.

Abstract: An oral composition comprising in an orally acceptable vehicle, an effective antiplaque amount of an halogenated diphenyl ether or phenolic antibacterial compound, and an amount of an mixed anionic/nonionic surfactant system at weight ratios of about 14:1 to 9:1 which ratios are effective to increase the uptake of the antibacterial compound to dental tissue so as to enhance the therapeutic efficacy of the administered antibacterial compound.

Abstract: An extrudable composite multilayer dentifrice composition for cleaning teeth containing reactive bicarbonate and peroxide ingredients which do not interact during storage or when extruded together from a container onto a toothbrush but react in the oral cavity when mixed during tooth brushing, the composition comprising two separate dentifrice components, one component containing a peroxide ingredient and the other component containing a colorant reactive with the peroxide ingredient, the components having substantially equivalent viscosity which are maintained in stable discrete layered phases in interfacial contact with each other prior to extrusion without interaction of the peroxide and the colorant and which are extrudable together in interfacial contact without interaction of the ingredients.

Abstract: An oral composition such as a dentifrice, mouthwash, lozenge or chewing gum containing a polyphosphate anticalculus agent, such as tetraalkali metal pyrophosphate and antibacterial antiplaque agent compatible therewith. The antiplaque agent is a substantially water-insoluble noncationic antibacterial agent such as 2,4,4'-trichloro-2'-hydroxydiphenyl ether (Triclosan). Antiplaque effectiveness is optimized by the presence of an antibacterial-enhancing agent which enhances delivery of said antibacterial agent to, and retention thereof on, oral surfaces.

The presence in the composition of polyvalent metal compounds and fluoride compounds do not affect the stability of the composition as well as reactive ingredients such as peroxide and bicarbonate compounds.

Abstract: A visually clear gel dentifrice comprising a polishing agent having a refractive index of about 1.41 to 1.47, a substantially water-insoluble noncationic antibacterial agent, an aqueous water-humectant liquid vehicle having a refractive index with about 0.02 refractive index units of the refractive index of the polishing agent and surfactant which is a sulfated polyoxyethylene alcohol sodium or potassium salt or a weight mixture of at least 3:1 to sodium or potassium lauryl sulfate with the sulfated polyoxyethylene alcohol or a weight mixture of about 1:3 to about 3:1 of sodium potassium lauryl sulfate with an N-acyl-N-alkyl taurate sodium or potassium salt. The visually clear systems have reduced formation of surfactant crystals when subject to cool temperature.
