  • Patent number: 5259715
Abstract: A self-locking connection between the external thread of a bolt and the internal thread of a nut is established by providing at least one face of the internal and/or external thread with a self-locking portion which is adjacent the root of the respective thread. The self-locking portion has a first facet which makes with the central axis of the respective thread an angle of between 5.degree. and 30.degree., preferably an angle of between 8.degree. and 15.degree., and at least one additional facet which is adjacent the first facet and is inclined relative to the central axis at a greater second angle. The self-locking action is established in that the crest of the other thread is urged toward and is deformed against the self-locking portion of the at least one face in response to adequate axial stressing of the nut and/or the bolt. The polygonal peripheral surface of the nut has an odd number of sections not a single one of which is parallel to any other section.

  • Patent number: 5257834
Abstract: A coupling for pipes having confronting ends with conical or flat outwardly extending flanges utilizes an elastomeric sealing ring which is placed between the flanges and a variable-diameter clamping device which is positioned to surround the flanges and has two radially inwardly divergent sidewalls each of which is adjacent the exposed side of one of the flanges. The conical radially inner portions of the sidewalls engage and penetrate into the external surfaces of the pipes in response to a reduction of the diameter of the clamping device, and any further reduction of the diameter entails a movement of progressively larger parts of radially outer portions of the sidewalls into engagement with the exposed sides of the adjacent flanges to bring about radial compression of a large portion of the sealing ring.

  • Patent number: 5257065
Abstract: Successive exposed photographic films are connected, either individually or in groups of two or more, to discrete sheet-like leaders which are transported along an elongated first path extending through the baths and the dryer of a developing unit. The leaders are separated from the respective webs downstream of the developing unit but upstream of a copying unit for developed films, and the separated leaders are directed into a second path to be gathered in a receptacle. The separation involves severing the leading end of each web close behind the respective leader, and the thus separated webs are caused to continue to advance along the first path through a magazine and thence into the copying unit.

  • Patent number: 5253390
Abstract: A hinge for an article of furniture has a mount which is attachable to a wall of the article. A hinge unit including a hinge arm and, optionally, a support for the arm is releasably connectible to the mount. To this end, the hinge unit is provided with a shaft which is receivable in a complementary recess of the mount. The hinge unit is further provided with a resilient tongue, and the tongue has a groove which cooperates with a projection on the mount to lock the hinge unit to the mount by snap action. A lever projects at an angle from both sides of the hinge unit, and the free end of each lever carries an arm which extends towards the tongue. An inclined protuberance is provided on either side of the tongue and each lever arm abuts a respective protuberance. The arrangement is such that, when the levers are urged towards one another, the lever arms cooperate with the protuberances to disengage the groove in the tongue from the projection on the mount.

  • Patent number: 5253011
Abstract: A strip of exposed and developed film has a series of exposures and corresponding exposure identification numbers. The strip is conveyed through a scanning station on its way to a printing station. The exposures and identification numbers are scanned in the scanning station to produce output signals indicative of density changes. The signals are processed to generate groups of data which are combined into a data set. Each group includes the position of a respective exposure on the strip, the identification number for the exposure and the position of the identification number on the strip. Film transport is carried out in such a manner that scanning of the strip and processing of the resulting signals are completed before arrival of the strip at the printing station. A control unit uses the data set to position the exposures in the printing station and to print the exposures. The control unit also uses the data set to mark a copy of an exposure with the identification number of the exposure.

  • Patent number: 5250975
Abstract: Apparatus for simultaneously treating two or more webs of photosensitive material has a tank with sets of pulleys for advancement of discrete webs. The sets of pulleys are installed in discrete compartments which are separated from each other by one or more light-intercepting partitions having one or more passages for the flow of liquid but preventing the penetration of light. Each set of pulleys is driven by a discrete motor or by a discrete clutch receiving torque from a single prime mover. The compartments are sealed by discrete closures. If the parts which are used to advance and treat a particular web happen to be defective or require attention for any other reason, the respective set of pulleys is arrested while the other set or sets of pulleys continue to transport the respective web or webs, and the cover for the compartment which confines the arrested set of pulleys is removed to afford access to the respective compartment.

  • Patent number: 5248887
Abstract: A length of exposed film has a timing track which extends along one of the longitudinal margins thereof. The timing track includes a begin segment having a first width, an end segment having a different second width and a grating between the segments. The grating consists of alternating light and dark segments having a uniform width different from the widths of the begin and end segments. The two longitudinal margins of the film are scanned by respective sensors as the film advances towards a film processing apparatus. Whenever a segment passes by a sensor, the width of the segment and its position in the timing track are recorded. Since the widths of the begin and end segments differ from the width of the grating segments, the position of the begin or end segment relative to the grating can be established. This information, combined with a knowledge of which sensor detected the timing track, makes it possible to determine the orientation of the film.

  • Patent number: 5247865
Abstract: Apparatus for subdividing a running web into narrower webs has a counterknife which is driven to rotate about a substantially horizontal axis. A second knife is freely rotatably mounted in a holder at a level above the counterknife. The holder is carried by the lower end of a vertically movable and turnable rod-like guide which can be moved up and down by a single-acting fluid-operated motor in cooperation with two springs or sets of springs. When the guide reaches its lower end position, the motor causes a conical end face at the lower end of a split sleeve to engage a complementary conical face at the upper end of a fixed guide member for the guide, whereby the sleeve clampingly engages the guide and locks it to the stationary cylinder of the motor so that the second knife is fixedly held at the selected level for any desired interval of time.

  • Patent number: 5248375
Abstract: Two parallel webs of wrapping material are advanced toward the inlet of a wrapping mechanism in a twin cigarette rod making, filter rod making or like machine adjacent a paster with two wheel-shaped rotary applicators which apply strips of adhesive to selected marginal portions of the respective webs. The applicators receive adhesive from discrete rotary adhesive supplying members which, in turn, receive adhesive from a tandem pump. The applicators are installed at a level below the wrapping mechanism to reduce the likelihood of contamination of such mechanism by sprays or droplets of adhesive. The webs are draped around discrete tobacco-containing or filter material-containing rods, and the adhesive-coated marginal portions of the webs are folded over the other marginal portions to form seams which extend in parallelism with the axes of the resulting cigarette rods or filter rods.
