  • Patent number: 4177848
Abstract: In a pneumatic, tired wheel having a tubeless tire mounted on the rim of the wheel, the improvement comprising a toroidal support device to enable the tired wheel to travel in a flat state. The support device comprises an inflatable, toroidal, inner tube located on the rim for elastically clamping the tire beads against the rim flanges, said tube radially extending from the well of the rim to or slightly beyond the radially outer edges of the rim flanges, and a toroidal support element whose radially internal, circumferential wall section is impervious to puncture and lies adjacent the radially external, circumferential area of the inner tube, and wherein the outer surface area of the support element is spaced from the inner surface area of the tire when the tire is in its inflated state so that under normal travel conditions the support element does not contact the inner surface area of the tire.

  • Patent number: 4174415
Abstract: A no-gel latex foam is formed by curing a no-gel latex foam froth on a water vapor permeable foraminous support that has been coated with a flock. During curing, the foam froth dehydrates through an upper free surface and at its lower supported surface through the flock and the foraminous supporting means. When the cured foam is removed from the foraminous supporting means, a portion of the flock adheres to the foam undersurface and another portion of the flock is left as a residue.

  • Patent number: 4169172
Abstract: A no-gel latex foam is formed by curing a no-gel latex foam froth on a water vapor-permeable foraminous support means comprising a backing material that has been coated with a water soluble release agent. During curing, the foam froth dehydrates through an upper free surface and at its lower supported surface through the release agent and the foraminous support means. The cured foam is then removed from the foraminous support means free of any backing material.

  • Patent number: 4164250
Abstract: A pneumatic tire having a "run-flat" capability, is disclosed. The tire is in the form of a substantially toroidally shaped carcass having a pair of bead-reinforced sidewall regions and a crown region annularly bridging the sidewall regions. Internally of the carcass, there is provided an expandable nail-deflector for deflecting a nail that punctures, for example, the crown region. The nail deflector has a releasably constrained normal condition when the crown region is puncture-free that is annularly spaced from the interior of the crown region, and is circumferentially self-expandable into engagement with the interior of the crown region upon puncture of the latter by a nail to deflect such nail harmlessly away from its path of entry.

  • Patent number: 4162729
Abstract: The protective package device, which can be varied in size to accommodate articles within a given dimensional range, includes a plurality of insert members, and a given number of corner sleeve members corresponding to the number of corners of the article being enclosed. An insert member when folded in one fashion engages straight sides of the article, and when folded in another fashion engages a corner portion of the article. The corner sleeve members are installed after the insert members are engaged with the article and are sized to overlap each other when installed on articles within the given dimensional range. The corner sleeve members can thus telescopically expand or contract to different package sizes determined by the enclosed article.

  • Patent number: 4153095
Abstract: A pneumatic insert for a pneumatic tire comprises a generally toroidal shaped hollow member having a pair of annular insert beads with sidewalls extending therefrom joined to an insert crown portion. An annular flap portion is joined to the outer surface of each insert sidewall at the bead area and extends beyond each bead a predetermined amount. The pneumatic insert is disposed in a standard tire and mounted on standard rim. The insert flaps are tucked between the respective insert beads and the bead support surface of the rim to provide a leak-tight seal. When the insert is inflated the insert beads push the respective tire beads against the rim flange. In one embodiment the tire is inflated through an air passage member disposed between the tire and insert beads. In another embodiment the tire is inflated directly through the tire sidewall with a hypodermic needle. The insert inflation chamber and the tire inflation chamber do not communicate and can be inflated to different pressure levels.

  • Patent number: 4149579
Abstract: A pneumatic tire, after manufacture, is provided with a propellant material and a foam forming sealant material in its interior pressurizable space. The propellant and sealant are isolated from each other during normal running conditions of the tire and have no significant effect on the normal running characteristics of the tire. When a tire fails due to a puncture or the like, a loss of tire pressure and/or collapse of the tire structure and/or heat build up in the bead area due to friction permit the propellant and the foam forming materials to interreact. In one embodiment of the invention the propellant and sealant are enclosed in separate chambers of a plurality of dual-chamber containers secured to the bead portion of the tire and/or a rim base. In other embodiments a plurality of mono-chamber containers house one of the materials, the other material being uncontained in the pressurizable space.

  • Patent number: 4132348
Abstract: A construction comprising a sheet of two contiguous detachable leaf members is folded and separated to form slide and sleeve components of the calculator. Fold lines in the sheet are formed parallel to a separation or tear line that divides one leaf member from the other leaf member. In assembling the slide calculator the leaf members can be separated before or after the folding operation. A marginal portion provided on one of the leaf members enables the sheet to be secured by adhesive or other suitable form of attachment to a newspaper or magazine, a package container, or a package label. In various embodiments of the invention an information readout is provided on reverse sides of the calculator including one embodiment wherein the printed format of the slide and sleeve components is applied to one surface only of the respective leaf members.

  • Patent number: 4115172
Abstract: An uninflated unmounted tire is supported in a frame of the apparatus for engagement with a sealant applicator head that contacts the interior tire liner after a bead spreading device on the frame spreads apart the tire beads, and an elevator member on the frame raises the tire. The applicator head has a tire engaging profile corresponding to that of the tire and an elongated opening for which highly viscous, sticky sealant is discharged onto the tire liner under the tread in a layer of predetermined cross section as the tire is rotated on the frame past the applicator head. A complete coating of sealant is applied during one revolution of the tire, with the sealant having a butt joint, or an overlapping splice formed when the elevator member is lowered a predetermined amount by a drop-off mechanism as the tire completes one revolution of sealant application.

  • Patent number: 4074743
Abstract: A radial carcass pneumatic tire having a carcass ply turn-up portion includes a reinforcement ply folded around each bead ring. Each reinforcement ply overlaps and extends beyond the turn-up edge of the carcass ply and includes for example a steel cord portion of thick cross-section abutting a textile cord portion of thinner cross section. The cords throughout the reinforcement ply are arranged obliquely with the cords of the radial carcass ply. In other respective embodiments a transition zone between the thick and thin portions of the reinforcement ply includes a cover strip, an overlapping portion and a filler strip. The bead reinforcement constructions reduce bead element edge separations and provide a desirable graduated stiffness from the bead to the beginning area of the sidewall permitting optimal transferring of torque and force.
