  • Patent number: 4005896
Abstract: Apparatus for handling a large object, i.e., for example, an annular core on which a tire carcass is to be formed, includes an annular wall positionable about the annular core, and a diaphragm associated with the inner surface of the wall and defining with the wall a chamber into which pressurized fluid may be directed. Such introduction of pressurized fluid expands the diaphragm so that such diaphragm comes into contact with and grips the core. The core may then be moved and or turned over by manipulation of the wall.

  • Patent number: 4005308
Abstract: Means are provided for maintaining a uniform height of deposited weld material in an electrical arc welding apparatus of the kind having a welding head driven by a travel motor along a juncture between two workpieces which are to be joined. A first signal, indicating departure from a desired fill depth, is produced by sensing variation of the welding current from a predetermined normal magnitude. The first signal is applied to summing junction together with a predetermined selectable reference signal of opposite polarity so that the two signals cancel out as long as the desired weld fill height is being maintained. Upon a departure from the desired weld fill height an output signal from the summing junction activates a servomotor which adjusts the speed of the travel motor as necessary to maintain the uniform weld depth.

  • Patent number: 4004670
Abstract: A clutch for coupling an engine to a transmission gearbox engages and disengages automatically in response to engine speed variation. Springs hold the clutch pressure plate retracted from the clutch discs at idling speeds. As engine speed increases, centrifugally generated fluid pressure in the clutch lubricant overcomes the spring force and applies a modulated engagement pressure to the discs. An internal valve continuously supplies an oil flow to lubricate and cool the clutch components and to charge the centrifugal pressure-generating means. Retraction of the pressure plate shifts the valve to reduce the oil flow while the clutch is disengaged. This reduces viscous drag within the clutch and thereby assures a more controlled disengagement. Retainer means stores some of the reduced oil flow to assure that ample fluid is available to the centrifugal pressure-generating mechanism when engagement commences.

  • Patent number: 4004779
Abstract: A rotatable drum for reeling in and releasing a cable has drive means which includes a normally disengaged drive input clutch, a normally engaged brake and a normally engaged disconnect clutch which may be used to uncouple the drum from the drive system so that it may be turned manually to withdraw cable. The input clutch may be selectively engaged and the brake and disconnect clutch may each be selectively disengaged by fluid pressure from a control valve connected to a source of fluid pressure. The valve has a Hold or Brake-On position at which each of the clutches and the brake are unpressurized, a Reel-In position at which the input clutch and the brake are pressurized, a Brake-Off position at which only the brake is pressurized and further has a Free-Spool position at which the disconnect clutch is pressurized to free the drum from the resistance or drag of the drive system. Centering springs resist movement of the control valve away from the Brake-On position.

  • Patent number: 4003675
Abstract: A mechanism for varying the position of a plurality of nozzle vanes in a gas turbine engine. The mechanism includes a single double-acting hydraulic actuating jack disposed between two bell cranks for simultaneously applying force to a ring gear at two diametrically opposed connection points. The single actuating jack applies equal and opposite forces to the diametrically opposed connection points on the ring gear and reduces distortion producing stresses therein. The ring gear simultaneously engages a plurality of individual gear segments rotatable with each individual nozzle vane in the engine. Movement of the single actuator jack causes balanced rotation of the ring gear and simultaneous rotation of the nozzle vanes.

  • Patent number: 4002107
Abstract: A double acting fluid pressure operated linear motor has an extruded cylinder member with a head endwall and mounting tang formed integrally thereon and has an annular step formed in the interior chamber at the rod end. A piston within the cylinder member is connected to a rod which extends through an end cap fitted against the annular step, the ends of the cylinder member being deformed inwardly to retain the end cap, rod and piston in place. This construction enables such devices to be manufactured extremely economically so that it is practical to discard and replace the actuator, if necessary, rather than performing repairs.

  • Patent number: 4000910
Abstract: A fluidic device senses acceleration of a vehicle or the like and may control a fluid motor or other mechanism which is to be actuated in response to acceleration. A nozzle directs a jet of fluid across an open gap in a direction transverse to the direction along which acceleration is to be sensed. Two receiver ports are positioned to receive and divide the fluid jet in the absence of flow deflection. Upon acceleration of the device, inertial effects cause the jet flow to be slightly deflected thereby changing the amount of flow received at one receiver port relative to the other to produce a fluidic signal. The signal may be amplified and caused to actuate a fluid motor. Compensating means are provided to eliminate signal error which might otherwise arise from tilting of the device or from changes in jet fluid viscosity.
