Abstract: An adjustable finger support for the flexion or extension of stiffened interphalangeal joints of a finger of the human hand including an elongated, hinged support base adapted with means for securely, yet comfortably holding the phalanges of the finger in place throughout the course of treatment. The elongated base is divided at hinges into respective support sections for the proximal, middle and distal phalanges of the finger, depending upon which of the DIP and PIP joints of the finger are to be treated. Jacking mean, such as a screw jack in the form of an elongated set screw operates in conjunction with hinged attachments to the respective proximal, middle and distal phalangeal support sections to 1) maintain the set position of the angle of the respective base portions and 2) to provide firm, controllable articulation of the joint over a wide range by selective operation of the jacking means.
Abstract: A routable operand and selectable operation processor multimedia extension unit is employed to stretch pixel bit images in a video system using an efficient, parallel technique. For a series of pixels in a row, a series of interpolation values are established, based on multiples of a reciprocal of a stretch factor. For each interpolation value, the integral portion is used to establish the appropriate two source pixels, and the fractional portion then provides weighting of those pixel values. The various source pixels and interpolation values are routed using the operand routing and operated upon using the vector selectable operations, yielding two destination pixels calculated in parallel.

Abstract: A multiple-way cache memory system incorporating circuitry for selectively enabling the sense amplifiers in a given memory bank only when the memory bank contains data that is being accessed. In the disclosed embodiment of the invention, each bank of memory incorporates a bank of at least one sense amplifier that is enabled by a separate sense amplifier control signal. The sense amplifiers in each memory bank are controlled independent of the address decoding logic. Instead, the sense amplifier control signal for each memory bank is generated from tag RAM read hit information and read address data. Preferably, no more than one bank of sense amplifiers is enabled at a time, Power consumption in the cache memory system is thereby greatly reduced.
Abstract: A computer includes a flexible member or tube fabricated from thermally conductive carbon fibers for transferring heat from a first portion, such as a base section of a portable computer, to a second portion, such as the display section of a portable computer, where the sections of the computer move between an open operating position and a closed position. The flexible member, fabricated from conductive fibers, is positioned so as to experience torsion upon opening the portable computer. A first heat pipe is thermally connected with a microprocessor in the base section at one end and at the other end is coaxially attached within the member or tube. A second heat pipe is similarly coaxially attached to the other end of the member or tube.

Abstract: Highly uniform microporous foam suitable for medical applications and methods for preparing these foams. The highly uniform microporous foams are of controlled pore size that may be utilized in a variety of applications. In preparing the foams, an organic crystalline polymer is melted and combined with a selected solid crystalline fugitive compound to produce a substantially isotropic solution. The solution is cooled under controlled conditions, which foster solid--solid phase separation by the simultaneous crystallization of the fugitive compound and the polymer, to produce a foam precursor containing the solidified fugitive compound dispersed through a matrix of the organic polymer. Crystals of fugitive compound are then removed by solvent extraction and/or sublimation, or like process to produce microcellular foams having a continuous, open-cell structure.

Abstract: A computer system which provides for slowing the effective speed of a microprocessor. The microprocessor includes a disabling input that when deactivated disables operations of the microprocessor on the processor bus. A computer system according to the invention periodically deasserts this signal with the certain duty cycle, allowing the microprocessor to continue to perform necessary functions at an effective rate compatible with older microprocessors, but never requiring an actual clock frequency change. This periodic deassertion is performed in response to a memory refresh counter that periodically counts down to zero and is reloaded. By comparing an input/output register with the refresh counter, and by adjusting the input/output register, the deasserting signal to the processor is periodically deasserted with a selectable duty cycle.
Abstract: A programmable leak tester is implemented to include the ability for performing a math step in conjunction with the program steps. The math step can use as inputs the result of a previous step, a register value, or a previous compensation or calibration value. As outputs, the math step can provide a compensation or calibration value for use in the execution of another program, can provide a register output, or can be provided as the step result for the current step. By using multiple math steps, the programmable tester provides flexible and adaptable leak testing in a variety of applications.
Abstract: The present invention simplifies the data modeling process and enables its full dynamic versioning by employing a non-hierarchical non-integrated structure to the organization of information. This is achieved by expressing data modeling, storage and transfer in a particular non-hierarchical, non-integrated neutral form. The neutral form of the present invention enables complete parallel processing of both data storage and data transfer operations. It also enables the direct integration of separate but related data models and their data without remodeling or reloading. Finally, the present invention enables direct transfer of neutral form information in a manner that includes all of the properties required to independently understand and interpret each transferred data value.

Abstract: A PCI repeater coupled between a primary bus and a secondary bus includes logic to allow downstream and upstream bursting across the repeater. The PCI repeater is operable to echo transactions in either an upstream or downstream direction. During configuration, the PCI repeater snoops configuration cycles on the primary bus to build an address map of devices on the primary bus. The PCI repeater then uses the address map as a lookup table as a positive determination of whether to forward a transaction upstream.
Abstract: A distributed direct memory access (DMA) architecture where DMA controllers are modified to create isolated DMA channels. Each isolated channel includes its own set of uniquely addressable registers which provide functional compatibility with conventional DMA controllers. A DMA master interacts compatibly with the computer system and transparently communicates special cycles to the isolated DMA channels to cause the distributed DMA architecture to appear as the DMA controllers. The DMA master spawns special cycles to the isolated channels for sharing common write data with multiple channels and merging read data into a single DMA controller compatible register. Channel 4 cascading is also handled via tracking registers and special cycles to maintain disable and masking functionality of channel 4 as it effects channels 0-3.
Abstract: A computer application stored on a storage medium (e.g., a portable storage medium such as a compact disk) is automatically launched. Initialization information expressed in accordance with a predefined syntax is stored on the storage medium. Also stored in the computer is "launching" information sufficient, together with the initialization information, to enable the computer to launch the application. The application is automatically launched, without user intervention, by reading the initialization information and using it in connection with the launching information stored in the computer.
