  • Patent number: 4596172
Abstract: The specification discloses an optimizing saw including a scanner unit having devices for measuring both the width and length of boards passing through the station whereby board feet can be calculated. More specifically, the width measuring device includes a reference plane and a reciprocating ram opposite the reference plane which engages a board therebetween to measure board width. The optimizing saw further includes a board conveying apparatus having a multi-speed hydraulic motor drive for smoothly and precisely transporting boards through the optimizing saw. Optimal saw cut locations for each board, control of the width-measuring device, calculation of board feet processed, pinch roll actuation, conveyor acceleration, conveyor deceleration, and status of current production against a predetermined bill of materials are all controlled by a single microprocessor.

  • Patent number: 4593063
Abstract: The specification discloses a polymer blend comprising 25 to 35% rubber dispersed in a laminar, network fashion in a rigid polymer phase. This is achieved by using a low molecular weight elastomer (70,000 to 100,000 weight average molecular weight) having 25 to 44% styrene and a melt flow rate of 8 to 15 grams per 10 minutes. This polymer blend is especially adapted for injection molding and products injection molded therefrom have a high gloss and excellent strength and toughness. The polymer blend is especially suited for injection molding and yields a high gloss, strong injection molded product.

  • Patent number: 4590721
Abstract: An arch structure for an earth sheltered building includes a plurality of curved wood panel sections arranged in tandem and in a plurality of adjacent rows. The sections are joined adhesively and define an arch resting on a foundation of footings. Each of the panel sections includes side members joined to end members and ribs extending between the side members and between the end members. Joined to the members are top and bottom skins which enclose the panel and in conjunction with the ribs define a plurality of compartments. Insulation material is disposed within the compartments. At least one of the skins is offset on the side members to define male and female portions which are joined with panel sections in adjacent rows. The panels are fabricated from wood. After assembling into the arch form, the panels are covered with an exterior sheathing which is pressure treated and waterproofed. End walls are attached to the arch section, and the structure is covered with earth.

  • Patent number: 4591171
Abstract: Means are provided to introduce pressurized fluid from a source into an intermittently rotated machine tool such as a chuck while the tool is stationary. The means includes a stationary annular shell surrounding a portion of the tool and radially spaced a short distance from the surface of the tool. The inside of the shell has a channel which seats an annular flexible U-shaped seal the radially outer ends of the legs of which are rigidly secured to the shell. The inner face of the seal is a web having a relatively stiff center band which, under fluid pressure is forced to shift into contact with the surface of the tool to form a seal on each side of a groove in the tool's surface. A restricted opening permits fluid from the inside of the seal to be introduced into the groove to supply the tool.

  • Patent number: 4589318
Abstract: A meat cutting device for cutting long rolls of meat into shorter chunks includes means for conveying long rolls one after another against a plurality of blades, each having converging sharpened edges forming a sharp point. The blades are positioned parallel to one another across and above the path of travel of the rolls and are located so that as a roll is conveyed into the blades, the blade points will pierce through the skin of the roll before the sharpened edges begin to slice through the roll. Preferably the conveyor means includes a table on which support cradles are moved and the blades are positioned above the table with the blade points located above the table so that central axis of the roll is located under the points as the roll is moved through the blades.
