Abstract: A rotary internal combustion engine has adjacent circular compression and combustion rotors fixed to a shaft and each having a radial vane sliding on an inner surface of a surrounding eccentric circular chamber, and an arcuate transfer passage communicating between the chambers through an intermediate wall via slots in the rotors adjacent the vanes.
Abstract: A process for dissolving deposits of metal oxides, and preferably iron oxides including magnetite without materially impairing the surface on which the deposits reside, which comprises contacting the solid metal oxide with a liquid medium composition comprising (1) an alkali metal borohydride, (2) a chelating agent which forms a metal complex with the metal oxide, said chelating agent being preferably a dialkali metal salt of a polyalkylene polyamine tetraalkanoic acid. The process is particularly effective for the dissolution of Fe.sub.3 O.sub.4 (magnetite) entrapped in the tube-to-tube sheet crevices of nuclear steam generators.
Abstract: A tracer composition is described whereby a nonradioactive photon emitter is coupled to a ligand, antigen or antibody for use in various immunoassay methods of analysis. The photon emitters employed are bioluminescent proteins such as firefly or bacterial luciferase as well as other luciferases from various species. To synthesize the new tracer, these photon emitters are coupled to antigens or antibodies using coupling agents such as glutaraldehyde, CNBr, carbodiimide and others. The coupling method may also include intermediate materials such as polysaccharides, polypeptides, polyacrylamides and others coupled between the photon emitter and the antigen or antibody. Methods are described for using this tracer in both competitive and noncompetitive immunoassays to detect proteins, hormones, drugs, viruses and the like. Detection is accomplished by activating the tracer in a bioluminescent reaction and measuring the emitted light by photometric instruments or by photographic film.
Abstract: A retractable cover designed for use in covering the bed of a conventional pick up truck. The cover includes a pair of beaded side edges wherein each of the beaded side edges slidably engage a track or longitudinal opening molded in a slide member mounted to the side walls of a bed on a pick up truck. One end of the cover is fixed to a spring loaded, continuously biased, roller rotatably mounted to the forward section of the truck's bed in a plane below the plane of the extended truck cover. A flap is also provided to cover the roller as well as a means to seal the flap to the truck cover when fully extended. A locking mechanism is fixed at or near the tailgate of the truck's bed to maintain the extended, spring biased, cover in an extended and locked position.
Abstract: A mud flap hanger for use on road vehicles such as trucks and truck-tractors wherein the hanger is adapted with pivotally mounted arms to which are attached mud flaps. The mud flaps may be moved from behind the wheel of a truck and stowed centrally between the rear wheels. Pivotal movement of the arms is achieved through use of a flexible bushing generally rectangular in shape wherein the inner walls of a generally square aperture has expansion slots and lubrication grooves for lubricating the arms carried within the aperture.
Abstract: The blades of a pair of suture scissors are pivotably mounted within a tapered hood. The nose of the hood is smoothly curved and a slot is formed thereacross such that the plane of the slot is in parallel alignment with the shearing line of the blades of the scissors. The width of the slot is such as to accommodate suture threads but not great enough to receive a knot in the suture. The mouth of the slot is smoothly curved to provide convex surfaces to assist in guiding the suture threads into the slot.
Abstract: An arm board for clinical use including a first elongated inclined ramp joined to a relatively shorter second inclined ramp at an angle to form a fulcrum over which a human wrist may be hyperflexed. A base is provided for resting on various surfaces. A hand grip is also provided for gripping by the patient. Means may be provided to set the angle at the fulcrum to accommodate various patients hand sizes and to maximize flexion.
Abstract: A blasting composition of high solids content, usually of plastic solid consistency, is composed of 60 to 90 parts by weight of solid particulate oxidizer salt, which is mainly ammonium nitrate, preferably fertilizer grade prills, and 10 to 40% of liquid slurry partially filling the interstices and voids in and between the solid particles. The slurry is one that will not appreciably dissolve or soften the granules, hence it is preferably a substantially saturated and thickened solution, in non-aqueous solvent, of strong oxidizer salt, typically ammonium and/or calcium nitrate to which sodium nitrate may be added. The preferred solvent is a low molecular weight polar organic liquid, selected from the group consisting of methanol, ethylene glycol, formamide and ethanol. In some cases isopropanol or propylene glycol may be included.
Abstract: The chain lubricating system of this invention includes an oil reservoir and a partially submerged sprocket wheel. The sprocket wheel is loosely carried on a stationary axle mounted within the reservoir to permit both rotation and lateral slidable movement thereon. The teeth of the sprocket are characterized to urge oil into the links and rollers of the drive chain as it is moved over the rotating sprocket.
