  • Patent number: 5221154
Abstract: A shaft retaining device having a shaft selectively retained as to translation and rotational movement. A sleeve coaxial with the shaft encloses a length of the shaft. The shaft has an outwardly projecting cam within the sleeve. A cam follower carried by the sleeve has a part thereof within the sleeve in a plane normal to the shaft axis and is cammed away from the shaft by the cam. The cam and cam follower have complementary profiles, one of which is a male profile and the other is a female profile, in which the cam and cam follower engage other effectively selectively immobilizing the shaft and sleeve as to relative translation movement when the cam and cam follower engage each other.

  • Patent number: 5204981
Abstract: Accordingly to the present invention, when an incidence angle of a direct wave or a satellite elevation angle reaches a predetermined value, signals from two (or more) antennas, which are disposed at positions where variations in the field intensities of radio waves recevied by the two antennas are negatively correlated (i.e. when the received signal level of one of them is low, the received signal level of the other is high) or uncorrelated (i.e. the variations are not related to each other), are successively or discretely switched at a suitable switching period, by which burst-like errors are spread with time to perform the de-interleave or interleave function in decoding transmitted signals.

  • Patent number: 5202612
Abstract: A concrete vibrator is disclosed in which a sensorless semiconductor motor is employed for driving an exciter. The sensorless semiconductor motor has an arrangement in which the rotational position of the permanent magnet rotor is sensed through utilization of a voltage which is induced from three-phase stator windings, i.e. a voltage which is induced according to the magnetic flux distribution in the gap and varies its frequency with the rotation speed alone instead of by using the Hall element which is readily damaged by vibration and heat, that is, seriously poor in environmental resistance. Further, the sensorless semiconductor motor is arranged so that the current supply to the stator winding is placed under control of a semiconductor inverter which is controlled by a PWM or PAM system.

  • Patent number: 5187717
Abstract: A wavelength-tunable semiconductor laser of distributed feedback (DFB) type wherein a diffraction grating having periodic corrugations along the direction of travel of light is formed on an active layer of at least one of layers adjacent thereto. An electrode on one side is separated into four or more electrodes in the direction of the cavity of the laser. Nonadjoining ones of them are electrically connected to form two electrode groups. The total length of first regions corresponding to a first one of the two electrode groups is larger than the total length of second regions corresponding to the second electrode group. The refractive indexes of the first regions are changed through current injection change to the first electrode group to vary the lasing wavelength and the gain of the second regions is controlled through current injection to the second electrode group, thereby generating output light of a constant output power and a variable single wavelength.

  • Patent number: 5178156
Abstract: The sleep-apnea syndrome is classified into a so-called central type caused by an abnormality in the respiratory center, an obstructive type by an upper airway obstruction, and a mixed type by a combination thereof. Among the rest, the obstructive type is often observed clinically and is considered to be caused by a morphological abnormality in the upper airway tract, such as tonsillar hypertrophy or micrognathia, or by a tonus of the upper airway muscle for broadening the airway. The inventors of this application have clarified by experiments that the upper airway can be recovered from obstruction which causes apnea stimulating the genioglossus, which is one of the dilator muscles of the upper airway, with pulses of a frequency of 40 to 150 Hz, a peak value of 1 to 50 volts and a rise-up time constant of 0.

  • Patent number: 5177799
Abstract: A speech encoder is disclosed, in which, of the DCT coefficients after the discrete cosine transformation, a coefficient which has a large absolute value and exerts great influence on the tone quality is selected and encoded and zeros are inserted into the other unselected coefficients, so that selective encoding is carried out which does not seriously deteriorate the tone quality even when the coding rate is 8 kbps or below. In another arrangement, about three to 16 different selection patterns (vector patterns per frame) are used for the selective coding and a pattern which minimizes the coding error is selected and encoded to ensure optimum coding.
