  • Patent number: 5858506
Abstract: A polyester-based coating composition capable of forming a striated pattern on a metal surface at a film thickness less than half of that of PVC plastisol films is provided by a thixotropic composition having a thix index of from about 1.5 to about 3 and comprising a hydroxy-functional polyester, a thixotropy-inducing rheologic agent and curing agent. The striated coating is applied to sheet metal in a coil coating operation by introducing the composition into a paint pan of a coil coater, transferring said composition from said paint pan to an applicator roll by rotating a pick-up roll in contact with the composition and with said applicator roll; continuously withdrawing a sheet of metal from a coil thereof and coating said sheet by contacting it with the applicator roll; curing the coating on said sheet by passing the sheet through an oven at an elevated temperature; and continuously rewinding said sheet into a coil.

  • Patent number: 5801219
Abstract: An acid-modified polyolefin is dispersed in water by adding a hydroxy-functional ester made from a polymeric acid and a monoepoxide having from 14 to 46 carbon atoms to the water. Said dispersion is substantially zero-VOC. When a composition of this invention is applied to the surface and cured by baking the article at an elevated temperature, a coating is obtained which improves the adherence of subsequent coatings to a polyolefinic article. A polyolefinic article is one having a surface comprising polypropylene or a polypropylene modified with rubber called a thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO).

  • Patent number: 5714206
Abstract: Wood is electrostatically coated with a thermosetting powder coating system in which a mixture of a self-curing epoxy resin and a catalyst therefore is extruded and a low temperature curing agent are both pulverized and the powders are blended with conventional additives to make a coating powder which is deposited on a wooden substrate and heated to cure. The mixture of resin and catalyst does not cure within the extruder but it is made to cure at low temperatures by the separate addition of the curing agent. A small amount of the low temperature curing agent, insufficient to cause substantial curing during extrusion may be used in place of the catalyst.

  • Patent number: 5708039
Abstract: A coating powder consisting essentially of generally spherical particles ranging in size from less than 2 to about 40 microns, 75% of whose volume consists of particles of from about 2 to about 20 microns in size, is provided by dissolving the components of the coating powder in a supercritical fluid without the aid of a surfactant and spraying the solution into a zone whose pressure is less than that of the fluid. A very smooth continuous film of a cured thermosettable coating powder is achieved even when the film thickness is less than 1 mil, e.g., from about 0.2 and greater. The advantages of powder coatings may now be realized fully in the automobile and can industries.

  • Patent number: 5700607
Abstract: In a process for fabricating a multilayer printed circuit board with permanent innerlayers of photoresist, the photoimageable composition used to form the hard permanent layer comprises a polymerizable acrylate monomer; an oligomer formed by the reaction of an epoxy resin and an acrylic or methacrylic acid; a photosensitive, free radical generating initiator for polymerization of the acrylic monomer and oligomer; a curable epoxy resin; a curing agent for the epoxy resin; and, optionally, a crosslinking agent reactive with hydroxyl groups. After exposure and development of a layer of the photoimageable composition and etching of the underlying metal layer on a board, the resultant photoresist is left on the circuitry traces. The innerlayers of photoresist are stacked in a press where it initially conforms under heat and pressure to fill voids between the innerlayers and then cures to permanence.

  • Patent number: 5698292
Abstract: The use of an amine salt of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid as a catalyst for the curing of hydroxyl-functional resins provides a wrinkle finish. The hydroxy-function may be present in polyesters, epoxies, and acrylate or methacrylate resins, among others. The polyester resins which are able to provide such a finish have a hot plate melt flow of at least about 50 mm but if it is more than 150 mm, the gel time of the resin must not be more than about 280 seconds. The minimum gel time in the case of polyesters is about 30 seconds.

  • Patent number: 5686195
Abstract: The surface of a zinc selenide substrate is ground to curve in the opposite direction from that which occurs due to the bimetallic effect when zinc sulfide is deposited on a flat substrate by the chemical vapor deposition process. The bowing of the interface that occurs upon cooling of the hot laminate when the surface of the substrate is flat before deposition is compensated for by the pre-figured bowing. A distortion free window for the transmission of infra-red radiation is provided by this invention.
