Abstract: Disclosed are novel compounds of the formula: ##STR1## WHEREIN EACH Z is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and halogen; Y is oxygen or sulfur; n is an integer of from 1 to 3; a, b, and c are integers of from 0 to 1; n+a+b+c=4; and wherein X, X', X" are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, alkyl of 1 to about 8 carbon atoms and --OC(O)R, provided that at least one of said X, X', X" substituents is --OC(O)R, and R is independently selected from the group consisting of alkyl of 1 to about 18 carbon atoms, haloalkyl of 1 to about 18 carbon atoms, alkoxyalkyl of from 1 to about 18 carbon atoms, aryl of from 6 to about 18 carbon atoms, and haloaryl of from about 6 to about 18 carbon atoms.The above compounds may be topically applied to polyester-containing textile materials in order to flame retard them; and the materials so treated have a durable flame retardance.

Abstract: Novel esters of pentavalent phosphorus acid having the formula ##STR1## WHEREIN R and R' are haloalkyl containing from 2 to 6 carbon atoms and from 1 to 6 halogen atoms; n is an integer of from 1 to 3; each X is independently selected from hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, or hydroxyl, provided that at least one X is hydroxyl. The above compounds are effective reactive flame retardants in polyurethane and polyester polymeric compositions.
Abstract: This invention discloses new compounds of the formula ##STR1## WHEREIN R.sup.1 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and alkyl; X is halogen; R.sup.2 is selected from the group consisting of alkyl, alkenyl and alkynyl; n is the integer 1 or 2; Z is alkyl; and m is an integer from 0 to 4. Further disclosed are herbicidal compositions utilizing the aforedescribed compounds.

Abstract: Novel flame retardant finishes comprising a water soluble quaternary phosphonium salt, a water soluble organic nitrogen containing compound, a haloalkyl phosphate of the formula ##STR1## WHEREIN EACH X is independently selected from chlorine, bromine, and hydrogen, wherein a is an integer from 1 to 2, wherein n is an integer from 1 to 8, wherein m is an integer from 0 to n, provided that when n is 1, m is 0, and mixtures of said haloalkyl phosphates, an emulsifiying agent which is capable of passing the following three tests: (1) Solubility (Compatability) Test: said emulsifying agent (20 parts by weight) must be soluble in 80 parts by weight of said phosphate ester at less than or equal to 80.degree. C.; (2) Shelf Life Test: a blend of said emulsifying agent and said phosphate ester prepared as in the Solubility Test must remain in one clear homogeneous phase at 22.degree. C.
Abstract: Intumescent coating compositions comprising a coating vehicle and a non-flaming intumescent agent of the formula ##STR1## wherein both X's are identical and selected from the group comprising oxygen and sulfur and wherein each Y is independently selected from the group consisting of alkoxy, halogenated alkoxy, cycloalkoxy, halogenated cycloalkoxy, olefinicoxy, halogenated olefinicoxy and --NR.sub.2 groups, wherein each R is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, halogenated alkyl, olefinic, and halogenated olefinic groups, said alkoxy, cycloalkoxy, olefinicoxy, alkyl and olefinic groups containing from 1 to about 12 carbon atoms and said halogenated groups containing from 1 to about 6 halogen substituents per group. A method for protecting a substrate from heat and fire comprising applying to the substrate an intumescing amount of the above described intumescent agents.

These flame retardant finishes are excellent for flame retarding textile materials including polyester/cotton blend fabrics.

Abstract: Novel triesters of pentavalent phosphorus acid having the formula: ##STR1## WHEREIN X is chlorine, bromine, or hydrogen, Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2 are independently selected from bromine, chlorine, or hydrogen; R.sup.1 is methyl, chloromethyl, bromomethyl or hydrogen; and R.sup.2 is methyl, chloromethyl or hydrogen, except that R.sup.2 is chloromethyl when R.sup.1 is bromomethyl, and non-scorching plastic composition containing polyurethanes and said triesters of pentavalent phosphorus acid.
