  • Patent number: 6363308
Abstract: A satellite crash sensor for a motor vehicle occupant restraint system that provides multi-stage deploy signaling in a manner that detects a second stage deploy crash event having an initial velocity rise followed by a loss of velocity that delays the continuation of the velocity rise. The sensor derives a velocity value from an accelerometer signal. The initiation of a possible crash event is detected and a clock count indicating a time progression into the event is initiated. A constant second stage threshold value and data defining a first stage threshold varying as function of the clock count are stored. Only for a time indicated by a first predetermined value of the clock count, a second stage datum is stored if the velocity exceeds the second stage threshold value.

  • Patent number: 6357734
Abstract: A monotube damper and suspension spring assembly for a motor vehicle includes a tubular housing defining a chamber filled with damping fluid. A piston and piston rod reciprocate within the chamber. In order to compensate for volumetric changes of the chamber due to extension and retraction of the piston rod within the chamber, either the upper seal cover or lower bottom ring assembly is slidable within the housing. A preload is applied either to the housing or to the seal cover to thereby bias these elements to compensate for volumetric changes in the chamber.

  • Patent number: 6356854
Abstract: Systems and methods for determining the position and classification of an object and which may provide signals that control deployment of an active restraint device, for example. Using a pulsed laser light beam from a laser source that is spread and preferably diffused to avoid ocular damage, an interference pattern is returned to a sensing module through a spectral filter. There it is optionally combined with a reference beam from the laser source, modified to emulate coherence length effects, and incident upon a phase transmission holographic template that may be segmented into regions for example. Each region of the holographic template contains Fourier transform images of occupant types. Behind the holographic template is a detector array that is sensitive to the laser light. An interference pattern derived from the object is convoluted or cross-correlated with the template. When an match occurs, a bright spot appears on the detector array.

  • Patent number: 6318519
Abstract: An improved magnetorheological fluid damper is provided which effectively provides a smooth transition, without a sharp break in the damper force/velocity curve, between very low damping forces near zero damper velocity to higher damping forces at higher piston velocities while maintaining desirable maximum force levels. The damper includes a piston assembly, including a magnet assembly and a flow gap extending through the piston assembly to permit fluid flow between the chambers. The force/velocity optimization feature includes a groove or passage open to the flow gap, positioned in series with a part of the flow gap in a magnetic circuit generated by the magnet assembly and dimnensioned/sized to permit fluid flowing through the passage to experience a magnetorheological effect less than a magnetorheological effect experienced by fluid flowing through the flow gap but not through the groove. Preferably, the passage is formed in an inner annular surface of a flux ring positioned around a piston core.

  • Patent number: 6318968
Abstract: An improved magnetorheological fluid pumping system and method are provided which effectively dispense a predetermined amount of magnetorheological fluid for delivery to a MR device such as a damper assembly, for example, during manufacture. The fluid pumping system includes a pump having inlet and outlet valves, a reciprocally mounted piston, a stroke operator device for controlling the movement of the piston and an electronic controller for operating the stroke operator device and the inlet and outlet valves. Importantly, the inlet and outlet valves include an annular flow gap and a magnetic field generating assembly operable in an energized state to generate a magnetic field across the flow gap to cause magnetorheological fluid flowing through the gap to experience a magnetorheological effect sufficient to prevent flow through the gap and in a de-energized state to permit flow through the gap.

  • Patent number: 6318515
Abstract: A hold down spring for yieldably securing a drum brake shoe to a drum brake backing plate includes a nail that extends through apertures in the backing plate and in the brake shoe. A coil spring circumscribes the nail and urges a spring retainer slidable on the nail away from the brake shoe. The nail extends through an elongated slot in the retainer, which includes a wider portion which accepts an expanded end of the nail and a narrower portion which is narrower than the expanded end but wide enough to permit the nail to freely slide along the slot. The slot is inclined toward the brake shoe, so that the action of the spring tends to force the nail within the slot toward a seating area at one end of the slot.

  • Patent number: 6311810
Abstract: A novel and improved magnetorheological fluid damper is provided which effectively secures a flux ring to a piston core in a manner which prevents relative axial and radial movement between the flux ring and the core throughout operation while minimizing the size of the piston assembly yet providing effective damping. Several connector devices are disclosed for both axially and radially securing the flux ring relative to the piston core at one end of the piston assembly in a simple manner without increasing the length of the piston assembly. The connector device may include an outer portion brazed to the flux ring, an inner portion connected to the piston core, bridge portions extending between the outer and inner portions, flow passages formed between the bridge portions and an inlet cavity formed adjacent an annular flow gap to permit unimpeded, enhanced laminar flow through the flow gap by improving the damping effect.

  • Patent number: 6305758
Abstract: An electro-hydraulic actuator for a motor vehicle brake-by-wire brake system including a housing, a piston bore in the housing, a T-shaped piston in the piston bore, and an electric motor connected to the piston through a speed reducer. The T-shaped piston includes a disc-shaped head in the piston bore and a tubular stem perpendicular slidable in and out of the piston bore through a sealed guide in the bottom of the piston bore. The top side of the piston head opposite the stem constitutes a large effective area of the piston for rapidly expelling a relatively large volume of fluid from the piston bore in a low pressure interval of operation the actuator. When the fluid pressure in the piston bore exceeds a transition pressure, a transition valve opens a bypass passage to the piston bore behind the piston head so that the same fluid pressure reacts against the bottom side of the piston head around the stem.

  • Patent number: 6301883
Abstract: A brake booster provides additional boost capacity without unduly increasing booster size and weight by providing a vacuum pump connected so as to add its additional vacuum capacity to that of the normal vacuum source when activated in response to sensed approaching run-out. The additional vacuum is provided by connecting the vacuum pump in a second conduit between the vacuum source and the booster vacuum chamber in parallel with a first conduit connecting the vacuum source directly with the booster vacuum chamber, with check valve means in the first and second conduits preventing substantial vacuum loss from the vacuum chamber.

  • Patent number: 6302385
Abstract: A vibration isolation mount particularly usefull for a hydraulic automotive vehicle braking system includes a shear mount, a rate washer, and a bolt and nut for clamping the shear mount and rate washer together and to the vibrating member. The shear mount is shaped to engage an opening in a support structure, such as a mounting bracket, and thereby connect the vibrating member to the support. In automotive applications, the mount reduces the amount of noise and vibration that is transmitted to the passenger compartment over prior art mounting systems while restricting travel of the accumulator plate with respect to the vehicle bracket within predetermined limits.
