    Abstract: At the mobile station the measured pilot energy of each pilot in the candidate set is iteratively compared against a threshold generated in accordance with the sum of the energies of the pilots in the active set. If the strongest pilot in the candidate set satisfies this threshold condition, it is added to the revised active set. A second iterative process is performed to determine whether a pilot should be deleted from the revised active set. The mobile station determines whether a change to the current active set is desirable by measuring the energies of the pilots in the active set and the candidate set, and dynamically adjusting the necessary thresholds based on its own estimation of the communication environment.

    Abstract: A novel and improved method and apparatus for providing an interface to a digital wireless telephone system compatible with standard analog wire line fax machines is described. To process a fax, a source interface waits until an interface to a destination fax machine has been established before establishing an interface to a source fax machine. The source fax transmission rate must be less than or equal to the destination fax transmission rate and the data rate of the digital channel. To establish the source fax interface at the proper rate, the source interface first selects and initial data rate from a set of standard fax transmission rates. The source interface sends unacceptable rate (failure to train) messages to the source fax machine until the source fax transmission rate is less than or equal to the data channel rate and the destination fax transmission rate.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling transmission power in a mobile communication system, which provides for a closed-loop power control method. A mobile station provides information on the quality of the signal received from the base station, and the base station responds by adjusting the power allocated to that user in a shared base station signal. The transmission power is adjusted initially by a large increment and then ramped down at an increasingly decreasing rate. The mobile station also provides information to the base station as to its relative velocity and the base station adjusts its transmission power in accordance with this velocity information.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for using feedback to control the output voltage of a Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS) that is used as the input voltage to subsequent Low Drop Out (LDO) linear voltage regulators. A multiplexer and Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) are used to successively sample the output voltages of multiple parallel LDO regulators. The digitized voltage values are input to a digital processor that compares the LDO regulator output voltages with acceptable limits previously stored in memory. The digitized voltage values are used by the digital processor to control the output voltage of a SMPS that is used as the input voltage to the LDO regulators. The output voltage of the SMPS, and thus the input of the LDO regulators, is reduced to the minimum value that retains full performance of the LDO regulators. Operating each LDO regulator at full regulation ensures full performance of the LDO regulators. Minimizing the input voltage to the LDO regulators maximizes the efficiency of the total power supply.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for accurately determining the operating characteristics or impact of nonlinear effects on devices or communication systems transferring orthogonally coded spread-spectrum communication signals. A Walsh Power Ratio, is used to more accurately determine system response. This information can be used by power control loops in controlling or adjusting the operation of nonlinear elements or stages such as high power amplifiers in orthogonal CDMA communication systems to provide improved system response. The information can also be employed in assigning channels to systems users, and to proceed with physical changes to system hardware. The measurements used to formulate the WPR can be made to individual components or to entire systems by injecting communication signals in multiple channels containing data, and leaving at least one empty channel. The received power per channel on the output side of the system or device is then measured.

    Abstract: A computer is coupled to a switching subsystem that connects the computer to either a network interface device or a wireless modem. The network interface device sends a status signal to the switch indicating whether the device is connected to the network. If a network connection is made, the network interface device is used to communicate over the network. If the status indication is that the network interface device is not connected, the switch automatically connects the wireless modem to the computer so that the computer can communicate with the network over a radio channel. In a preferred embodiment, the switching subsystem reconnects to the network port when it again becomes operable.

    Abstract: A discrete polyphase digital filter is provided having only a single multiplier and a single cumulative adder for use in a mobile telephone. In one implementation, the filter is a discrete N-phase digital filter including an input line providing an input signal and a group of M delay elements connected to the input line for generating M successively delayed versions of the input signal. A coefficient memory unit is provided for storing M filter coefficients. A multiplier is connected to outputs of the delay elements and to the coefficient memory for multiplying the output of each successive delay element with a corresponding coefficient. A cumulative adder is also provided for summing M successive outputs from the multiplier to provide a single, filtered output signal for each group of M input signals. The multiplier and adder are operated at a rate of M/N times a frequency of the input signal to thereby provide one output signal for every N input signals.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for extending the sequence numbering range for a selective repeat transmission protocol is described. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, data frames are transmitted including an eight-bit sequence number and a one-bit retransmit flag. The one bit retransmit flag indicates whether the frame is newly transmitted or retransmitted due to a failed first transmission. The transmit and receive systems each maintain a twelve-bit sequence number referred to as a "long sequence numbers" comprised of the eight-bit sequence number transmitted with each frame and a four-bit extension. The long sequence number is transmitted within control frames and the eight-bit sequence number is transmitted within the data frames.

    Abstract: A system for securing a protective boot over a connector assembly is disclosed. The boot is designed to slide over a pair of mated cable connectors, one connector being panel mounted and the other being cable mounted. The protective boot is located axially along the cable and is positioned over the mated connectors until it is flush against the panel, preventing environmental elements from damaging the connectors. The protective boot is held firmly against the panel by a locking element located on the cable connector which engages a concentric groove located inside of the protective boot. The concentric groove is located at an appropriate distance away from the boot opening such that the locking element engages the groove just as the boot opening becomes flush against the mounting panel.

    Abstract: A system and method for selecting and combining satellite communication signals from multiple antennas. The system includes at least two signal paths, each coupled to a separate antenna, and a combiner for combining signals from the two paths for processing by a signal processor. The signal processor can distinguish a signal received from a source on one of the antennas from that signal received from the source on the other antenna based on a signal delay produced by the signal delay unit. Each signal path includes a variable attenuator for selectively coupling each signal path to the signal processor. The signal processor determines the quality of the signals received along the signal paths, and provides data regarding signal quality to a control processor, which manipulates the attenuators to couple the signal path having the highest quality signal to the signal processor.

    Abstract: A novel and improved digital FM audio processor for use in a dual-mode communication system selectively operative in either FM or code division multiple access (CDMA) modes. Analog voice or voice-band data is input to a speech encoder/decoder (CODEC) which converts the analog signal to a digital signal. The digital FM signal is read from the CODEC, filtered, compressed, up-sampled and combined with a transponded SAT signal and then modulated for RF transmission. On the receive side, the FM analog signal is received, demodulated, down-sampled, expanded, and filtered before being converted to the proper format (.mu.-law, a-law, or linear) for the speech CODEC. The CODEC then converts the digital FM audio signal into an analog waveform for conversion to sound. By performing the FM audio processing digitally, the same digital signal processing (DSP) firmware may integrated on the same application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) which is capable of performing audio processing of both FM and CDMA audio signals.
