Abstract: A method of interpolating between two signals comprising the conversion of each signal into digital form and use of the converted signals to address a memory device at each address of which is pre-stored the result of interpolation for a particular combination of values of the signals.One embodiment of the method resides in a shaft angle encoder having: sensor means regulated by an encoder disc to produce two analogue output signals, analogue to digital conversion means which convert the said analogue signals, a memory device in which the said results are pre-stored and memory addressing means which use the converted signals to cause corresponding pre-stored results to be output from the memory device.
Abstract: A pop noise removing circuit for a double deck cassette tape recorder, which can thoroughly remove the pop noise occurring during the actuation of two deck leaf switches to drive deck motors. The circuit comprises means detecting ON-OFF operation of the deck leaf switches and generating control signals in response to the ON-OFF operation of the deck leaf switches, and means for muting left and right channel output signals from a head switching integrated circuit in dependence upon the control signals generated by the detecting means.
Abstract: An asymmetric multi-mode fibre optic coupler is assembled from two or more multi-mode optical fibres of different core and cladding diameters but substantially equal cladding refractive indices. The fibres are selected so as to have substantially equal effective refractive indices for their respective highest-order cladding modes, at least in the fabricated coupler.

Abstract: A DNA sequence comprising:(a) a hybrid first yeast promoter comprising the functional segment of the DNA sequence encoding the upstream activation site of a gene selected from the group consisting of GAL1, GAL7 and GAL10, operably linked to the functional segment of the transcription initiation site of MF-.alpha.-1;(b) the functional segment of a signal sequence substantially comprising preferred yeast codons;(c) the functional segment of the DNA sequence comprising a Saccharomyces GAPDH transcription terminator;(d) the functional segment of the Saccharomyces 2.mu. circle replication origin; and(e) the functional segment of the yeast LEU2-d selectable marker. The DNA sequence may further comprise, inserted in phase between the signal sequence and transcription terminator, the functional segment of a DNA sequence encoding a heterologous target peptide.

Abstract: Purified Mullerian inhibiting substance (MIS) is obtained from testicular tissue by extraction, density gradient sedimentation and chromatography. The purified MIS has selective activity for inhibiting the growth of human ovarian cancer cells.
Abstract: An integrated system for process control in which a process supervisor procedure (which is preferably the top-level procedure) is configured as a modular software structure, with modules which can be revised by a user at any time, without significantly interrupting the operation of the process supervisor. The modular software structure can define control parameters for many process control procedures, and can retrieve data from many sources (preferably including a historical database of process data, which can provide time-stamped data). The supervisor can also call on various expert subprocedures. Preferably the expert subprocedures can also be modified by an authorized user at any time, by calling up and editing a set of natural-language rule templates which correspond to the rules being executed by the expert subprocedure.
Abstract: A continuous hybridoma cell line, designated 7H8, which secretes a monoclonal antibody (MAb 7H8) of the IgM class and which binds to a protein present in species of the genus Plasmodium. MAb 7H8 also recognizes an antigen (antigen Pf93) unique to P. falciparum. Methods of isolating the substantially pure antigen using the antibody of the present invention are disclosed. MAb 7H8 is well suited for use in immunometric assays. Preferred is a two-sited assay developed with MAb 7H8. Anti-idiotypic and anti anti-idiotypic antibodies to MAb 7H8 are disclosed. The antibodies and antigens of the present invention are useful for immunodiagnostic and immunotherapeutic treatment of malarial diseases of man and animals.
Abstract: Disclosed is a method of treating tumors capable of being treated with interferon which is comprised of interferon and dipyridamole, or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, in amounts sufficient to enhance the anti-tumor effect of interferon. Further disclosed is a pharmaceutical composition comprised of interferon and dipyridamole.
Abstract: The invention relates to modified subtilisin enzymes which have increased thermal stability. The modified subtilisin enzymes have at least two or more amino acid mutations which confer increased thermal stability. It has been discovered that combining individual stabilizing mutations in subtilisin frequently results in an additive increase in thermal stability. In addition, the invention pertains to cloned mutant genes coding for a subtilisin material having at least two amino acid substitution which has increased thermal stability.
Abstract: The invention is a multiplexer which enables light to be sent to and received from samples for simultaneous analysis. A multiplexer is described which uses a transverse probe to reflect light at an angle into an optical rod. The transverse probe is selectively rotated to transmit light to a second optical rod. Various numbers of optical rods may be used in the linear mutliplexer. A multiplexer is also described in which a conjugate optical barrel is utilized to selectively reflect light to various probes.

Abstract: Vectors useful in the construction of cDNA libraries and methods for constructing these vectors are disclosed. According to the invention, a vector includes a polylinker region which is cut to linearize the vector. Oligo(dC) tails having terminal dideoxynucleotides are added to the two 3' ends of the vector. One oligo(dC) tail is removed and replaced with oligo(dT) to which poly(A) mRNA is annealed. The first complementary DNA strand is synthesized and tailed with oligo(dG), which anneals with the remaining oligo(dC) tail, thus circularizing the vector. The mRNA is digested and the second cDNA strand synthesized. Alternatively, the second cDNA strand can be synthesized before circularizing the vector. The resulting vector is used to transform microorganisms to create a cDNA library. The cDNA can be recovered by cleaving the vector at sites within the polylinker sequence.
Abstract: An automatic battery exhanging system for use with automatic guided vehicles which is capable of taking out the battery which is discharged below a threshold voltage of usefulness, mounting the battery to a recharging station, and after charging it, taking it back to the automatic guided vehicle so that the automatic guided vehicle may return to normal operation. This is completed under the control of a control unit. The invention comprises a battery mounting and dismounting means, a lifting means, a horizontal conveying means, a charging means, a dropping means, and control unit which automatically executes all of these operations.
Abstract: In a method of forming a metallic silicide film on a substrate, a metallic silicide film containing silicon at a concentration higher than stoichiometric, is deposited on a substrate. A film of aluminum or aluminum alloy is then deposited on the metallic silicide film. Subsequently, a heat treatment is conducted to cause precipitation of silicon from the metallic silicide film to the aluminum, thereby to lower the silicon concentration in the silicide film.

Abstract: A ceramic article made from a mixture comprising (on a dry weight basis) magnesium oxide (MgO) in an amount up to 2% by weight, a defined rare earth oxide in amount up to 10% by weight, balance beryllium oxide, and trace elements, the defined rare earth oxide being zirconium oxide (ZrO.sub.2), hafnium oxide (HfO.sub.2), cerium oxide (Ce.sub.2 O.sub.3), yttrium oxide (Y.sub.2 O.sub.3), ytterbium oxide (Yb.sub.2 O.sub.3) or thorium oxide (ThO.sub.2). Such ceramic articles have much improved properties in particular higher densities than attainable hitherto and better crossbreak strength and surface smoothness as fired. The ceramic compositions can also be admixed with supplementary ceramic materials such as silicon carbide to produce microwave absorbing materials.
