  • Patent number: 4813113
Abstract: A rolling mill roll assembly includes a roll shaft having a tapered portion located adjacent to an end portion. An annular tungsten carbide work roll is received on the tapered shaft portion. The work roll has circumferentially spaced keys integrally formed on its outer face. A tapered sleeve is axially wedged between the work roll and the tapered shaft portion. A drive ring is connected to the sleeve. The drive ring is splined to the shaft end portion and is provided with lug members which are axially received between and which are rotatably engaged with the keys on the outer roll face. Driving torque is thus transmitted from the shaft to the roll via the driving ring, with the roll being concentrically located with respect to the shaft axis by the tapered sleeve.

  • Patent number: 4809530
Abstract: A rolling mill run-in table has at least two parallel paths extending alongside the receiving end of a cooling bed. First and second slide members extend respectively along each path on the side thereof closest to the cooling bed. First and second unitary lift assemblies extend respectively along the opposite side of each path. Each lift assembly has a side channel opening laterally towards the cooling bed. An underlying operating mechanism alternately adjusts the left assemblies between lowermost positions at which their side channels are closed by the adjacent slide members and aligned with the respective paths to confine product lengths moving axially therealong, and elevated positions at which the side channels are above the receiving paths and clear of the adjacent slide members to accommodate lateral discharge of the product lengths onto the receiving end of the cooling bed.

  • Patent number: 4807390
Abstract: An insect electrocution apparatus and method of operation utilizing a series connected, dual coil primary of a ballast/step-up transformer to provide increased impedance only during the starting of the insect attracting fluorescent tube. The fluorescent tube is connected between the two primary coils with the fluorescent tube starter and one of the primary coils connected in series with the fluorescent tube filaments. Upon starting, both coils are energized and provide the desired amount of impedance. Once the fluorescent tube ignites, the starter and the second primary coil are operationally removed from the circuit leaving only the first primary coil to provide ballast for the fluorescent tube.

  • Patent number: 4805271
Abstract: An end connector for connecting an end of a watch band to a watch case. The watch case has spaced lugs adapted to accommodate a conventional spring bar or the like removably engaged therebetween. The watch band is of the expansible type with a row of top links overlying a row of bottom links, and with spring loaded elements for interconnecting the top and bottom links in a manner permitting longitudinal expansion and contraction of the band. The end connector comprises a generally flat shank having a hook portion at one end and a tab portion at an opposite end. The shank is configured and dimensioned for insertion into the end of the watch band between the rows of top and bottom links. The tab portion is bent out of the plane of the thus inserted shank into an interlocked position protruding between two adjacent bottom links, and the hook portion is engaged with the spring bar.

  • Patent number: 4803768
Abstract: Collars for surrounding the nipples of an anode bar are produced from a coil of aluminium sheet material. Sheet metal strips are separated from the coil, and are then pre-shaped to substantially U-shaped parts in a bending unit. These U-shaped parts are then pushed over the nipples of the anode bar, and their overlapping ends are fixed to one another by means of a fixing device, to form closed collars.

  • Patent number: 4802928
Abstract: A doctor blade assembly has a doctor blade supported in a blade holder. The blade has a projecting front edge adapted to be placed in contact with a moving surface to be doctored, and a rear edge adapted to be received in the blade holder. The blade is preloaded in a manner such that tensile stresses are induced in the front edge thereof. The level of such tensile stresses is below the yield strength of the blade material, yet high enough to prevent compressive stresses from developing at the blade front edge as a result of heat being generated by frictional contact between the blade and the moving surface being doctored.

  • Patent number: 4798932
Abstract: A continuous process for solid-phase edge bonding a plurality of dissimilar metal strips to form a composite edge-bonded strip. A plurality of elongated metal strips of equal thickness are heated and aligned in a substantially planar, edge-to-edge relationship and pass through a pair of compression bonding rollers. The bonding roller form a rectangular-shaped cavity having a width slightly greater than the combined width of the plurality of strips and a height less than that of the strips, to reduce in thickness and further elongate the metal strips without substantially changing the combined width of the strips and to form a solid-phase bond between adjacent side edges of the strips. The strength of the solid-phase bond is substantially equal to that of the parent metal strips such that the composite strip can be cut or stamped to form detail component parts such as electronic lead frames without bond failure.

  • Patent number: 4790395
Abstract: Pipe-driving apparatus used to create a pipe line of small diameter uses a pressing station in an access trench to drive in pipe sections one by one. A boring head and conveyor worm operates at the front of the pipe line in a working pipe section on which a cutting shoe is swivably mounted. The worm is a spiral flight on a drive shaft which runs within an open fronted container on which a drive unit for the boring head and the worm is mounted. Hydraulic bracing units mounted to the container can be swung out and engaged with stops in the working pipe section to brace the container during the filling operation. Projections on the container engage with the shoe and the bracing units can be used to steer the shoe. When the container is filled the bracing units re stowed and the container is withdrawn back down the pipe line to the access trench for discharging the material.

  • Patent number: 4790673
Abstract: In a bearing assembly for a roll neck in a rolling mill, an inner seal ring is mounted with an interference fit as by shrink fitting, on an end portion of an inner bearing component, e.g., the sleeve of an oil film bearing or the inner race of a roller bearing. The end portion of the inner bearing component is suitably dimensioned and configured to deflect radially inwardly under the influence of hoop stresses developed as a result of the aforesaid interference fit, thereby causing the inner seal ring to be inclined towards the roll end face. The end portion of the inner bearing component has an outer diameter which is larger than the outer diameter of the remainder of the inner bearing component.

  • Patent number: 4789432
Abstract: An apparatus for doctoring a cylindrical rotating surface, comprising a doctor back mounted for rotation about a first axis, and a blade carrier assembly mounted on the doctor back for rotation about a second parallel axis. A doctor blade is removably supported by the blade carrier assembly and is loaded against the rotating surface by a force applied to rotate the doctor back about the first axis. A liquid filled flexible walled tube extends along the second axis between the doctor back and the blade carrier assembly. The blade angle is adjusted by expanding and contracting the liquid filled tube to rotate the blade carrier about the second axis.
