Abstract: Instead of the usual glass case the heating element and thermostat of a submersible thermostatically controlled heater are disposed in separate cases made of metal and plastics respectively which are secured together in liquid-tight manner with the heating element connected through the thermostat to an external source of operating current and the metal case for the heating element connected to earth.
Abstract: This invention is an overspeed control arrangement for vertical axis wind turbines employing normally vertically positioned rotor blades, said control arrangement allows the rotor blades to tilt either forward or backwards to form a swept wing configuration, at wind turbine speeds beyond the design rpm. When the rotor blade is in a highly swept wing configuration its high drag and low lift reduces the turbine rotor torque to zero and eliminates excessive overspeeding and structural damage. The rotor blade can tilt about a radial or nearly so, tilt-support arm, mounted on a concentric bearing, the tilting starts at the feathering design rpm which is controlled by the geometric position of the combined center of gravity of both rotor blade and tilt-support arm. The control arrangement is automatic and passive and does not require the use of springs, pulleys or levers.
Abstract: A low-current contact structure formed on a contact member or substrate of various layers is described. A layer of refractory material is connected via a layer of easily diffusive metal with a layer of noble metal through diffusion annealing.
Abstract: This invention relates to a bushing for processing molten glass. The bushing has a bottom wall provided with orifices to deliver downwardly flowing streams of molten glass, side walls and end walls. The bushing is provided with oppositely arranged terminals to receive electrical conductors for heating the bushing. The end walls of the bushing and the terminal means are moulded integrally from rhodium or platinum/rhodium alloy.
Abstract: A method of operating a data processing system having at least two real-time data processors is described. The method permits the processing of tasks with minimal delay. Given tasks may be coupled to one of the data processors, depending on the type of task and which of the processors has been preselected to operate on such tasks. Each of the data processors is continuously monitored for the purpose of continually determining the utilization ratio for each processor. Each processor is assigned a predetermined upper limit value for its utilization ratio, which value lies below the processor's overload limit. If the upper limit value is exceeded, tasks coupled to one data processor are diverted to another data processor. In the other processor the diverted tasks are processed after the program switchover.

Abstract: A display using at least one LED to create at least one entire dot matrix for alphanumeric characters. This is obtained by interposing between the LED and the observer a special rotating prism of transparent material. Two of the opposite faces of the prism are parallel to the axis of rotation, two other faces are inclined with respect to said axis of an angle .alpha., while the remaining two faces are inclined with respect to the same axis of an angle 2 .alpha.. In consequence of the rotation of the prism and of the different inclination of its faces, the virtual image of the LED is successively positioned at all of the points of a matrix of 5 columns. The turning on of the LEDs of the display is synchronized with the rotation of the prism by means of a sensing device cooperating with a strobe wheel and the emitted light is modulated according to the desired character, so that for each LED a full alphanumeric character is displayed according to a dot matrix.
Abstract: A method is described for phase regulating a received timing signal in a data transmission system wherein the transmissions contain partial response pulses. In a receiver the composite transmitted signal is reproduced, and it generally differs from certain given values. A sampling signal having amplitudes indicating these differences is produced. The sampling signal is multiplied by a factor signal to produce a multiplicative signal. The latter is integrated to produce a regulating signal used for making the aforementioned phase adjustment.
Abstract: In a computer having a keyboard for entry of data represented by a series of bytes and/or instructions, processor is provided for processing data entered via the keyboard with a control unit controlling the entry and processing of data. An activatable guiding device including a single digit display instructs the operator by displaying as a number of machine conditions to the operator, a number of signals corresponding to a plurality of configurations of a single byte output from the processor. The control unit generates an activating instruction for activating the display.
Abstract: A form of construction of and a method for fabricating individual conductor paths in hybrid circuits having conductor crossovers are described. Integrated circuit chips forming the crossovers are metallized so that at least the peripheral areas crosswise to the crossed conductor paths are free from metal.

Abstract: A data handling apparatus of solid state construction for a data processing system. The apparatus has a storage and input/output gates for peripheral units. The storage includes input and output counters for generating storage addresses which, respectively, determine a location for useful data to be temporarily stored while in transit and a location to which such data is to be emitted. The counting modes can be switched to accomodate connecting two or more units of the data processing system. A comparator is connected to the counter outputs and produces therefrom an indication of the state of occupation of the various storage locations.
Abstract: An airfreight pallet comprises a core sandwiched between a pair of cover plates with the edges of the core enclosed by a shoulder strip extending around the periphery of the core and extending between the cover plates and forming at least four edges of the pallet, at least one of such pallet edges being provided with a plurality of openings therethrough communicating with internal connecting member holding structures mounted within the core.
Abstract: A bland protein product having a texture and mouth feel simulating animal meat is prepared from a dough-like mixture of proteinaceous material and water. The proteinaceous material can comprise relatively low protein content blends or even single ingredients such as soy flour. The process comprises continuously extruding the protein dough in the form of a relatively thin sheet of semi-rigid protein material into a confined treating zone while simultaneously subjecting the thin sheet in the extrusion die to externally applied heat to texturize both surfaces of the sheet before it enters into the confined zone. In the confined zone a stream of heated gas is directed at the thin sheet of surface-texturized protein to break off the leading segment of the sheet and further to propel the segments through the confined zone where additional texturization takes place. Finally, the protein segments are passed through a back pressure means at the end of the confined zone, and recovered in usable form.
Abstract: A method for repairing or retreading a vehicle tire comprising the steps of filling a repair region with vulcanisable rubber, covering the repair region with a flexible cover attached around its edges to the tire with an adhesive, piercing the cover with a suction needle at points where air or other gases have accumulated, sealing of the openings made by the needle, and heating the repair region to vulcanize the repair rubber.
Abstract: An autoadaptive working center for programmable automation comprises sensing means adapted to recognize a set of different situations of the working process, and program means for storing a program constituted by a set of subroutines corresponding to the said situations. The said sensing means are adapted to address, in response to the recognition of a given situation of the working process, the corresponding subroutine of the program. The working center comprises at least a pair of autoadaptive operating devices programmable separately and controllable by separate control units, under coordination made by a central unit as a function of the duration of the respective operations, the working positions of the various tools and the overall dimensions of the said heads. Each operating head is movable along at least two coordinates by numerical control units, each unit commanding a corresponding stepping motor.
Abstract: Apparatus is described for monitoring the state, e.g., with regard to polarity, of signal lines in a telecommunication system. An input circuit, by means of high resistances relative to the line resistance, connects the lines to a differential amplifier having a predetermined threshold of response. A component of the amplifier output is applied to the input so as to have a polarity opposite to that of a bias voltage coupled to the amplifier. A capacitive protective circuit connected between the signal lines provides a time delay thereby protecting against interference pulses.
Abstract: Metallic scrap containing a coating of organic insulation material is processed to recover a clean, unoxidized metallic substrate and various insulation by-products by thermally decomposing the organic insulation under pressure in a closed, externally heated vessel. Volatile decomposition products are periodically vented to a vapor recovery system and non-volatile decomposition products, primarily carbonaceous char adhering to the clean scrap, are separated by mechanical action such as vibration or tumbling. Apparatus for performing this process is also disclosed.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a modular logic circuit, which is preferably utilized in a telephone switching system, comprising electronic logic elements using binary logic operation. The input terminals of the circuit have one input signal at a time applied to them whereupon an output signal is supplied through its output terminals; the output is dependent on how the modular circuit was previously set by electrical means. The logic elements comprise transistors in a matrix arrangement connected to horizontal and vertical lines. The modular circuit of the present invention is characterized in that it can be set any number of times by means of a first setting signal applied to the input terminals and a second setting signal applied simultaneously to the output terminals.
Abstract: A windshield washing and deicing system comprising a reservoir for containing washer fluid having a sealed container supported therein. A pump is effective to transfer washer fluid from the reservoir to the container and from the container to a plurality of nozzles located adjacent a vehicle window. A conduit is located in the reservoir for carrying heated engine coolant through the reservoir to heat the washer fluid therein. An electrical resistance wire is provided for further heating the washer fluid in the container whenever the temperature of the fluid in the container is below a predetermined minimum to quickly deice the vehicle window.
