Abstract: The present invention is directed to an improved electromagnetic relay having means for eliminating the chatter or bounce of the relay armature upon the movement of the relay armature from its energized position to its rest position, that is, the releasing or returning movement of the relay armature. An armature stopping means is formed by two resilient strips which deflect in response to the returning movement of the relay armature. This deflection of these resilient strips stores energy in these resilient strips for returning the relay armature to its initial rest position. In addition to these two resilient strips, the armature stopping means of the present invention includes means for generating independent counter forces which oppose the deflection of these resilient strips. One of these counter forces is a frictional force generated by the abuttment of a bent flange forming part of each of the resilient strips against rigid mounting elements for mounting the two resilient strips.

Abstract: A system is disclosed for enabling a user to start an engine from a remote location, utilizing a receiver for receiving a command signal from a remote transmitter operated by the user, the receiver generating signals to control operation of the starting system. The system enables the user, from the remote location, to effect selective momentary pumping of fuel into the engine prior to activation of the starting operation, and then to start the engine. The system may include apparatus for maintaining the throttle of the engine substantially open until the engine is started and then closing the throttle to an idling position, with automatic momentary pumping of additional fuel into the engine at predetermined intervals during the running of the engine in accordance with the starting operation. Protective apparatus may be included with the system to prevent activation of the starting operation at any time a manually controlled starting switch has been activated prior to activation of the starting system.
Abstract: A liquid sealing device, for inhibiting passage of liquid between a rotatably mounted shaft and an aperture through which the shaft extends with working clearance, including an annular shoulder projecting from the shaft, means adjacent the shaft formed with a cylindrical bore in which the shoulder is rotatable with working clearance, a helical groove extending around the periphery of the annular shoulder, and closure means for the bore adjacent one end of said annular shoulder, said closure means defining said aperture through which the shaft extends with working clearance, whereby rotation of the shaft in a given direction will cause the helical groove to resist the passage of liquid between the annular shoulder and the bore, and will enable the annular shoulder and closure means to co-operate and thereby inhibit passage through the clearance between the shaft and the aperture of any residual liquid which overcomes the resistance of the helical groove.
Abstract: A visual display for an electronic accounting computer comprising a keyboard and a console. The computer concurrently executes two programs. The console is provided with a changeover switch for selectively allocating the keyboard, the display and the console to one of the programs. As introduction from the keyboard is required, an operator guidance message is displayed. This message is replaced by the response of the operator when it is initiated. If the program not selected by the allocating switch requires attention, an operator call message is developed. The changeover switch is moved to select the program requiring attention. An appropriate message requesting the needed data is displayed, to be replaced by the data as the operator introduces it. The operator then repositions the allocating switch, and the message defining the next required introduction of the original program is displayed, so that data introduction may resume.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for use in electronic computer for altering a stored program. The deletion of an instruction from a main memory storing it results in a compression of the program that included the deleted instruction in order to conserve memory space. The insertion of an instruction in a program stored in a main memory results in the shifting of subsequent instructions stored therein. The memory may be divided into arbitrary sections in response to an instruction enabling the search of a particular subroutine to be shortened. The subroutines in the program which can be reached each have a corresponding program level register. At each subroutine jump instruction the contents of the program level registers are shifted up in order to save the current program level register contents.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are described synchronizing oscillators at the network junctions in a pulse code modulation (PCM), time division multiplex (TDM) telecommunication network. In each network node pulse trains of clock pulses are received via incoming lines, and corresponding clock pulse trains are produced in the network node in accordance with the node's clock frequency division factor. The received and locally produced pulse trains are phase-compared, and a control signal resulting from the comparison is used to control the frequency of the clock oscillator in the network node. In each network node of a first network which has a direct line connection to a network node in a second network a phase comparison takes place between the two networks, and the result of the latter comparison is compared with the result of an intra-network comparison. The result of the latter comparison is used to adjust the line clock frequency of a given network.
