  • Patent number: 4912744
Abstract: An anti-lock system for controlling the slip level on one or more wheels of a vehicle by comparing the actual wheel speed with a vehicle reference speed obtained by processing wheel speed signals through a filtering system, the filtering system comprising a selection device which produces an input signal from one or a combination of the wheel speeds, an error forming device which subtracts the required vehicle speed estimate from the input signal to produce a speed error, a non-linear device which is effective to limit the slew rate of the filtering system in both positive and negative directions in accordance with vehicle characteristics, a secondary filter which reduces transients present in the error signal, and an integration device which accumulates the error signal and whose output is fed back to the error forming device as the required vehicle speed estimate.

  • Patent number: 4909644
Abstract: A bearing wherein the size of the rotatable components, i.e. balls or needle rollers, can be maximized while the cage dimensions are minimized, thus aiding overall design for a mechanical device in which the bearing is located. The bearing comprises a cage constructed of flat flexible material, the cage having a generally U-shaped transverse cross-section with a number of rotatable components located between the arms of the generally U-shaped cross-section cage, each component extending partially through aligned apertures in each of said arms. When inserted between two facing helical surfaces and in engagement with both the cage automatically conforms to the pitch of the helical surfaces without the necessity of being pre-shaped to conform thereto.

  • Patent number: 4900099
Abstract: In a method of controlling the brake pressure in an anti-lock vehicle brake system (ABS system), wherein the rotational behavior of a braked wheel is measured and the brake pressure is lowered in response to the slip and/or rotational retardation of the wheel if threshold values are exceeded, and is subsequently raised again and then kept constant during a phase of steady pressure, it is provided that the duration (t1H, t2H . . . t5H) of the pressure stability phase is adjusted in response to a comparison of the pressure reduction periods (t1DOWN, t2DOWN . . . ) and/or the pressure build-up periods (t1UP, t2UP . . . ) of the instantaneous control cycle (1,2 . . . 5) with those of at least one preceding control cycle in order to obtain shorter stopping distances.

  • Patent number: 4895179
Abstract: Cleaning apparatus for cleaning a generally planar generally horizontal surface comprises at least one nozzle for providing a jet of cleaning liquid directed against the surface and which is mounted by an arm on a shaft for rotation about the axis of the shaft which is perpendicular to the surface. The nozzle rotates within a chamber defined by a casing assembly which has an open lower end closed by the surface to the cleaning and which carries a seal for sealing against the surface to contain cleaning liquid within the chamber. The casing assembly defines a peripheral liquid collection region from which the liquid is withdrawn through an outlet by a pump. The nozzle is self-motivating and may be associated with an impellor having blades for inducing flow of ambient fluid, e.g. air, into the chamber, the air flowing out of the chamber with the cleaning liquid and assisting removal of cleaning liquid therefrom.

  • Patent number: 4888982
Abstract: To ascertain when individual foundry molds and cores, bonded by a chemical method, have reached the requisition hardness, or still have the requisite hardness, a probe is pushed into the mold or core with a predetermined force, then withdrawn, and after a time interval it is pushed into a fresh point on the mold or core. This is repeated a number of times, each time in a different place, until the penetration is less than a predetermined value, indicating that the requisite hardness has been reached. Apparatus for doing this automatically can be portable and may signal by lamp and/or sound when the hardness has reached the required value. It may be modified to check whether the hardness of a core or mold made some time earlier has fallen below a given minimum value.

  • Patent number: 4886238
Abstract: Apparatus and method for injecting molten plastics material into a midsole cavity by the provision of channels entirely within at least one-half of a split side mold defining sides of the cavity. This arrangement eliminates the problems associated with injecting the molten plastics along a channel formed in the parting line between the side mold halves and particularly overcomes the problem of injecting molten plastics material incorporating a blowing agent to provide closed cells in the midsole.

  • Patent number: 4856755
Abstract: A device for controlling the flow of a parenteral fluid, comprises a resilient tubular body of an infusion tube having a flattened portion with two parallel opposed walls. Each wall has a tapering groove, the grooves together defining a longitudinal region of non-contact between the walls of tapering cross-section. Regulating means is provided for flexing a short length of the body about a longitudinal axis of the body so as to urge the two walls together so that the rate of flow is determined by the cross-section of the region of non-contact at said length. Flexure about the longitudinal axis of the body avoids cold-flow of the region of non-contact. The regulating means comprises a support and an operating member longitudinally movable relative to the support, the body being flexed at said length by the co-operation of the support and the operating member. The support is preferably a channel having side walls which define grooves to guide a roller for longitudinal movement relative to the channel.

  • Patent number: 4852953
Abstract: An anti-skid braking system for a vehicle comprising a supply of fluid for actuating a plurality of wheel brakes, a skid control unit interposed between the fluid supply and the brakes, sensors to detect the skidding of a plurality of wheels and actuating means responsive to skid signals from the sensors and adapted to actuate the skid control unit to relive the fluid pressure at the brake of the wheel at impending lock by means of a plurality of successive first brake release periods. In order to reduce yawing, when an impending skid condition is detected at one wheel, the skid control unit is arranged to induce second, shorter brake release periods in one or more of the brakes of the wheels not at impending lock.

Abstract: On a brake support (12) engaging over a brake disk (10) a piston (34) is supported and on the other side a floating caliper (14) is supported for axial displacement. In both cases slide guides (40) are provided for the supporting and each have a guide body (42) having a groove (46) parallel to the axis (A) of the brake disk (10) and a threaded pin (48) which extends transversely of the axial center plane (B) of the brake and engages into the associated groove (46). The slide guides (40) are surrounded in each case by a resilient sealing sleeve (54) which is protected by a heat shield (66) arranged between it and the brake disk (10). Associated with the threaded pins (48) are anti-rotation locks for securing the pins against turning and which comprise mounting members (56) secured to the brake support (12). The mounting members (56) carry at the same time the heat shields (66).
