Abstract: Automated tests to evaluate the antibody titer of a sample by incubating a test sample, bacteria, and complement, and detecting bacterial growth in the incubated mixture, and to identify bacteria and its titer in a sample by incubating a test sample, bacterial antiserum, and complement, and detecting inhibition of bacterial growth in the incubated mixture. The automated tests lend themselves to diagnostic use and may be provided in the form of diagnostic test kits.

Abstract: 6-Oxo-2-piperidinecarboxylic acid has been resolved via direct crystallization of pure S-6-oxo-2-piperidinecarboxylic acid dehydroabietylammonium salt from a solvent system consisting of dimethylformamide, cyclohexane and acetone. The S-enantiomer is a required component for making certain tripeptides related to thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) which are central nervous system stimulants.
Abstract: A vaccine against Group C meningococcal meningitis consisting of a polysaccharide of which at least 80% by weight has a molecular weight in excess of 1,000,000 daltons is prepared. The polysaccharide was isolated from Group C hexadecyl trimethylammonium bromide cell paste with 1.0M CaCl.sub.2 extraction and purified by phenol extraction, ultracentrifugation at 100,000 g. and ethanol fractionation (30%-45% v/v in ethanol).

Abstract: 4-Hydroxy-3-methoxyphenylacetone, an intermediate for methyldopa, has been prepared from reacting two moles of guaiacol and one mole of a 2-alkoxy propanol followed by basic elimination to form the enol ether of 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy phenyl acetone. The enol ether is subsequently converted to 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy phenyl acetone upon treatment with a strong acid.
Abstract: A vaccine against E. coli caused diarrhea is prepared from an isolate of the homogeneous heat-labile enterotoxin of human strain MB3353 of Escherichia coli, ATCC 31361, or of the porcine strain MB3708, ATCC 31362. The toxin, which is a protein, is a low molecular weight species of 10,000-13,000.
