  • Patent number: 4351118
Abstract: Indefinite strand yarn is steam and heat treated in an enclosure. The yarn travels in an indefinite length moving coil through a tunnel that extends through the enclosure, with steam being supplied to the enclosure and the exhaust pipes leading from adjacent the inlet and outlet of the tunnel to a blower for exhaust to the exterior of the enclosure. Periodically, the buildup of yarn filaments and partially solidified condensate on the interior surfaces are removed by spraying liquid solvent along such surfaces, preferably with nozzles that spray solid cones of liquid solvent axially down the various pipes and automatic timed controls for sequencing such spraying.

  • Patent number: 4350670
Abstract: A coal or petroleum combustion flue gas containing sulfur oxides and dust is treated by contacting the flue gas with a sulfur dioxide-oxidizing catalyst, thereby converting sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide, allowing the resulting sulfur trioxide to react with components of dust, absorbing the trioxide into the dust as a sulfate, and removing the dust. Catalytic oxidation of sulfur dioxide can be efficiently carried out at a low temperature and sulfur oxides can be efficiently removed from the flue gas.

  • Patent number: 4348131
Abstract: A welded structure and a method for making same wherein a plurality of weld metals, such as martensitic steel and austenitic steel, differing in coefficient of thermal expansion from each other are deposited in a plurality of layers thicknesswise of the welded structure in a gap defined by structural members to be welded in such a manner that a layer of the weld metal of higher coefficient of thermal expansion is covered by a layer of the weld metal of lower coefficient of thermal expansion in a weld formed, to improve brittle fracture strength, fatigue strength and stress corrosion cracking resistance of the weld. By subjecting the welded structure to stress relief annealing treatment, it is possible to produce compressive stress on the surface of the layer of the weld metal of lower coefficient of thermal expansion.

  • Patent number: 4341595
Abstract: A rotary vane type evaporator has a cylindrical vessel and a rotor rotatable therein. The rotor has vane supports fixed to a rotor shaft and vanes each pivotally mounted at the radially inner end to a vane support and having a radially outer end connected with a shoe extending in the circumferential direction of the vessel. Each vane is provided with a balance weight acting to keep constant, irrespective of the wear of the shoe, the pressing force which urges the shoe against the vessel inner peripheral surface. The rotor vanes are disposed in a plurality of stages arranged in axial direction of the rotor. The rotor is so constructed as to uniformalize the wear of the vane shoes over all the stages, whereby the frequency of the interruption of the evaporator operation for the renewal of vanes is lowered to improve the rate of the operation of the evaporator.

  • Patent number: 4338283
Abstract: A fluidized bed combustor wherein a combustion chamber and a regeneration chamber are both contained in a single hollow body is provided. These two chambers are formed by vertically partitioning the body by a partition wall, which has an upper opening and a lower one, and also each have a perforated plate at the bottom part thereof on which a heat transfer medium containing a desulfurizing agent is placed and fluidized. The desulfurizing agent is transferred from the combustion chamber through the lower opening to the regeneration chamber and circulated by overflow through the upper opening again to the combustion chamber. Various modifications of the above-mentioned fundamental embodiment are proposed. Combustion and desulfurization are automatically and effectively carried out in a single apparatus to give a high percentage desulfurization, make an apparatus compact, and reduce an initial cost and a running cost thereof.

  • Patent number: 4334159
Abstract: A slip ring cooling device for electrical rotary machine comprises a plurality of closed chambers axially extending in the peripheral portion with intervals therebetween in the peripheral direction, and an annular passage at one side. The closed chambers each are defined by the surfaces of holes made in the slip ring so as to axially extend at the peripheral portion of the slip ring. The axially extended holes have open ends and closed ends. The annular passage is fluidly connected to each of said open ends so that said closed chambers communicate with said annular passage. A volatile liquid poured in said passage is distributed uniformly to each of said closed chambers by centrifugal force applied thereon upon the rotation of the slip ring. The distributed liquid is evaporated by the slip ring and brushes contacting the slip ring to form vapor. The vapor is transferred to the lower temperature portion by the pressure difference to be cooled and condensed, whereby the slip ring is cooled.
