  • Patent number: 7554215
Abstract: A generator can convert the energy from subsurface currents or undertow into electricity. The generator has a submergible electrical coil adapted to allow water propelled by subsurface currents to enter and flow axially through the coil. The electrical coil is supported above a sea floor in substantial alignment with the subsurface currents. A magnetic shuttle is mounted to longitudinally reciprocate in the coil, driven by water flowing through the coil. Additionally, a plurality of electrical coils can be submerged above a sea floor. Magnetic shuttles are placed separately into a corresponding one of the coils to longitudinally reciprocate, driven by water flowing through the coils.

  • Patent number: 7520149
Abstract: A combination writing instrument and handcuff accessory has a housing containing an elongated writing element with a writing tip. The housing has at its distal end a key suitable for opening a handcuff. The key has a longitudinal tunnel sized to allow passage of the writing tip. The housing also has a mechanism for reciprocating the writing element between a retracted and an extended position. The writing tip in the extended position extends (a) through the tunnel, and (b) outside the housing a predetermined distance. The portion of the writing element extending from the key can be inserted into a double lock hole of a handcuff.

  • Patent number: 7467426
Abstract: A body support for providing a beneficial effect has a frame and a first and a second plurality of flexible parallel bands, which are interdigitated. A primary shaft rotatably mounted in a frame can tighten and slacken the first plurality of bands. This can be done by having the shaft wind and unwind the first plurality of bands or by appropriately positioning a camshaft or the like at one edge of the body support surface to adjustably hold each of the first plurality of bands there. In the latter case the shaft provides a plurality of support locations at the first edge of the support surface that are moved, in order to alternately tighten and slacken the first plurality of bands. Other disclosed apparatus and methods can tighten and slacken the second plurality of bands as well.

  • Patent number: 7425271
Abstract: Sludge can be treated by placing it in a carrier sized for bulk shipment of sludge by road or by rail. An antipathogenic substance such as lime is mixed into the sludge located in the carrier in order to treat pathogens in the sludge. At least one mixer adapted for mixing sludge throughout the carrier is employed. A dispenser such as a conduit or a loader bucket can dispense the antipathogenic substance so that the mixer can mix the substance with the sludge. The sludge is transported in the carrier either before or after the mixing with the antipathogenic substance. The mixture of sludge and antipathogenic substance is allowed to remain in the carrier long enough to treat pathogens with the substance before unloading the sludge from the carrier at a destination established for utilization, storage, transfer or disposal of the sludge.

  • Patent number: 7291376
Abstract: A surgical floormat arranged to shed fluids has a topside and an underside. The floormat is placed where a surgeon is expected to stand during surgery. Fluids released during surgery are allowed to fall onto and be shed off the floormat before being removed. The floormat may be discarded before starting another surgery. The mat is formed, at least in part, of compressible and resilient material. The topside of the mat has a spaced plurality of channels. In one instance, each of the channels has a floor sloping in opposite directions from a central peak. In another instance, the mat has a tapered apron bordering a central section that is convexly crowned to shed fluids. Crossing the apron but not the crowned center section are a plurality of channels that are sloped to shed fluids off the floormat.

  • Patent number: 7291321
Abstract: A perovskite catalyst is prepared using a ceramic sol-sol methodology comprising preparing slurry in water of an alkaline earth metal salt, a powdered metal salt and a powdered transition metal oxide, adding a polymeric binder to form a paste, drying and comminuting the paste into a powder and heating the powder with a temperature profile to calcination temperatures. In one embodiment the slurry is formed of titanium oxide with barium carbonate and tin chloride in deionized water, and more specifically by a mixture according to Ba (1-0.05x)+TiO2+SnCl2(0.05x) where x is in moles. The perovskite catalyst is preferably used in a process for oxidative coupling of methane. Catalyst performance is enhanced through the addition of halides to the feed gas in the reaction.

  • Patent number: 7292154
Abstract: A monitor can sense the difference in temperature between the inside and the outside of an enclosure containing electrical power equipment. The monitor has a case adapted for mounting at the enclosure. Also included is a first and a second sensor for producing a first signal and a second signal, respectively. The first sensor is mounted at the case and is adapted for insertion through an opening in the enclosure. The second sensor is adapted to sense temperature at a location remote from the first sensor. Specifically, the case is mounted so that one of the sensors is inside the enclosure and the other is outside. The monitor also includes an alarm system mounted at the case and coupled to the first and the second sensor for producing a warning signal in response to the first and the second signals from the first and the second sensor signifying a temperature difference exceeding a predetermined threshold.

  • Patent number: 7288882
Abstract: A lamp electrode adapted to deliver mercury during an assembly process has a supporting electrical lead attached to the proximal end of a metallic shell. The proximal and a distal ends of the metallic shell each lie along a central axis. A container with a vitreous plug in a sealed end contains a substance for delivering mercury upon heating of the container. The sidewall of the container is attached to the electrical lead. The longitudinal axis of the container is skewed relative to the electrical lead to orient the container in a direction to reduce discharge of mercury directly toward the metallic shell. The container is heated to open it and discharge a mercury dose from the sealed end, which is prone to opening upon heating of the container.

  • Patent number: 7267743
Abstract: Waxes prepared from hydrogenated plant oils, such as castor, palm, and soybean, are used to prepare water based emulsions. The inventive waxes, obtained from naturally derived, renewable resources, were emulsified under anionic, cationic and nonionic conditions, producing emulsions having a solids content up to about 45% solids. When used to coat fibrous cellulosic articles, such as paperboard, the emulsions' performance was similar to emulsions containing petroleum-derived waxes. The inventive waxes have a low iodine value (between 2-5), and melting points between approximately 120-200 degrees F. (Mettler Drop Point). These waxes comprise a triglyceride whose fatty acids are predominantly stearic acid or ricinoleic acid.

  • Patent number: 7224641
Abstract: Arrangement for use for seismic surveys of geological formations in a seabed, where a plurality of such arrangements, which are provided with sensor units 26, are placed on the seabed for collecting pressure waves and shear waves reflected from the geological formations. There exist arrangements for transferring seismic data to a surface receiver placed on a vessel, an offshore installation, or an onshore installation. Each sensor unit 26 is held by a carrier 10 and is connected to a cylindrically skirt-shaped structure 19 adapted to be led down into the seabed, and each sensor unit 26 comprises at least one geophone. The carrier 10 comprises a holder 12 for the cylindrically skirt-shaped structure 19, which structure 19 shall penetrate down into the seabed, as this holder 12 is adapted to be moved between a lower position and an upper position, to be able to be mechanically released from the skirt-shaped structure 19.
