    Abstract: A safety locking device is provided for assuring proper matching relationship between a surgical instrument and a trocar guide tube housing. The safety device is slidably mounted on the elongated portion of the surgical instrument, and includes locking fingers with locking tabs projecting radially inward to releasable a circumferential groove in the surgical instrument elongated portion. The locking fingers include a camming surface to engage a corresponding camming surface associated with an appropriate guide tube housing. As the surgical instrument is inserted into an appropriate guide tube housing, the guide tube housing camming surface engages the locking finger camming surface to disengage the locking tabs from the circumferential groove and permit complete insertion of the instrument. A sleeve surrounds the locking fingers to prevent tampering, and as unlocking tool is provided.

    Abstract: An apparatus for maintaining a positional relationship between a trocar cannula and body tissue into which the cannula is inserted includes a tissue engaging member having a conical outer surface with a thread helically disposed thereon. A guide tube is insertable into a bore in the tissue engaging member, the guide tube having a camming surface. A collet with flexible projections is engageable with the guide tube. When the collet is tightened onto the guide tube the flexible projections bend inward to frictionally engage and hold a trocar cannula inserted through the axial bore of the apparatus.

    Abstract: Synthetic absorbable sutures are filled with a stabilizing agent, preferably a mixture of glycerol and calcium lactate, and inserted into a retainer having a narrow convoluted passageway. The retainer is inserted into an open foil pouch with a package stabilizing element, such as a paper sheet filled with stabilizing agent. The package containing the suture, retainer and package stabilizing element is sterilized, aerated, equilibrated to a relatively high moisture level, and sealed. Long lengths of suture and doubled-over and tripled-over suture may be withdrawn from the retainer with low force without damaging the suture. Bends and kinks in the suture are prevented so as to provide a synthetic absorbable suture having highly desirable out of package hand and feel. The suture as removed from the package exhibits improved tissue drag characteristics.

The first and second housings slidably mount onto a trocar tube and can be secured relative to the guide tube by rotatably tightening the housings to cause the gripping fingers to firmly grip the trocar tube. Depth penetration indicia is provided on the guide tube surface and sufficient guide tube grasping force is obtained to prevent the depth indicator from being dislodged during trocar insertion. A guide tube positioning device is provided to engage the penetration depth indicator and to secure the guide tube relative to the surrounding skin of the patient in order to prevent inadvertent withdrawal or further insertion of the trocar.

    Abstract: The surgical clip applicator has a pusher bar which positions the foremost clip from a clip carrier into a ready-to-fire position between the jaws prior to squeezing of the handles together. When the applicator is fired, the previously positioned surgical clip can be crimped about a vessel and when the jaws are released, a new clip is placed between the jaws for the next firing. A channel assembly moves over the jaws to close the jaw while the pusher bar is retracted into the clip carrier for delivering the foremost clip from the carrier upon release of the handles. A latch arrangement is provided for locking the channel assembly in place and the handles against movement should the clip carrier be empty.
