  • Patent number: 5332475
Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for cross-linking a proteinaceous material. The process comprises: i) soaking the material to be cross-linked in an agueous solution of high osmolality; ii) incubating the material in an agueous buffer including an amount of a photooxidative catalyst sufficient to catalyze photooxidation of the material; and iii) irradiating the material and the catalyst of step (i) with light that includes a range of wavelengths selectively absorbed by the catalyst. Irradiation is effected under conditions such that cross-linking of the material occurs. In a further embodiment, the present invention relates to a cross-linked product produced by the above-described method.

  • Patent number: 5319956
Abstract: Method of confirming the presence or absence of leaks in a liquid storage container, particularly in partially filled underground storage tanks, subjected to partial vacuum for the purpose of testing the tank for the presence of a leak in the area above the liquid using a hydrophone or microphone either positioned in or attached to the container to detect the sound produced by the ingress of fluid into the container as a result of the vacuum. The ingress of fluid is confirmed by recording and observing the vacuum pump on/off cycles, the on/off cycles for a leaking container being distinguishable from the on/off cycles for a non-leaking container.

  • Patent number: 5320325
Abstract: A ram of a ram-type blowout preventer is enclosed within an enclosure so that the piston driving the ram is placed parallel to a stationary magnetizable waveguide tube. A transverse ring-like magnet assembly surrounds the tube and is attached to a carrier that, in turn, is attached to the tail of the piston. The magnet assembly longitudinally magnetizes an area of the tube where it is located. A wire running through the tube is periodically interrogated with an electrical current pulse, which produces a toroidal magnetic field about the wire. When the toroidal field intersects with the longitudinally magnetized area, a magnetostrictive acoustical return pulse is reflected back up the tube for detection by a transducer located outside of the enclosure. The time that the acoustical pulse travels from the magnetic field intersection compared to the timing of the electrical pulse on the wire is a measure of distance since the pulse time essentially travels at the speed of light.

  • Patent number: 5317617
Abstract: Method and apparatus for storing and moving an x-ray detector assembly in and out of the field of radiation produced by a radiation therapy simulator source while remaining affixed to the gantry of the simulator and retaining the functional attributes of a standard radiation therapy simulator cassette holder. When mounted to the simulator, the apparatus of the present invention has the ability to position an x-ray cassette in a fixed position relative to the radiation source, allow for the use of an image intensifier tube by being effectively radiolucent over the tube, and incorporating a mechanism which is capable of absorbing a degree of movement independent of the gantry while simultaneously activating a switch mechanism which can be used to stop gantry rotation, thereby preventing damage to the device or that which it contacts.

  • Patent number: 5309991
Abstract: There is disclosed a wellhead connector for connecting first and second tubular wellhead members in end-to-end relation, wherein locking segments are carried by a ring about the first member for movement between an outer position, to permit the ring to be moved over an outer surface of the second member, to an inner position in which locking shoulders on the inner ends of the locking segments slidably engage a locking shoulder about the outer surface of the second member to urge the ends of the members into tight engagement. The locking segments are moved to their inner positions by means of wedges guidably movable in the ring outwardly of the locking segments and having surfaces slidable over surfaces on the outer ends of the segments as the wedges are moved toward one another, and are moved to their outer positions, as the wedges move away from one another, by means of coil springs acting between the body and locking segments.

  • Patent number: 5307264
Abstract: Apparatus and method for mounting on an existing x-ray simulator and calculating a back projected computed tomographic image. The detector array is linear and outputs signals from the photodiodes mounted therein to a preprocessor for smoothing, correcting and filtering and subsequent processing to transform the signal from that produced by an x-ray originating from a fan beam source, e.g., in a polar coordinate system, into the signal which would have been produced by a detector in an array on which a parallel beam is incident on a Cartesian coordinate system. The transformed data is converted to a gray scale value for a picture element having a specific position in the Cartesian coordinate system and output to an appropriate display. Data is taken at each incremental angle as the beam source and detector array rotate around a target object.

  • Patent number: 5301724
Abstract: Apparatus for quick, clean and convenient changing of the oil or other fluids of a vehicle of particular use to the "do-it-yourselfer." The apparatus is sized so as to fit under most vehicles when resting on one side thereof and is provided with a pivoting extensible arm having a funnel mounted on the end thereof for collecting the fluid that is mounted in a recess in one side thereof so as not to catch on the undercarriage of the vehicle when slid under or out from under the vehicle. Once positioned, the funnel is raised into close approximation with the oil drain plug, oil filter neck, or other location from which fluid is to be collected, and the fluid is drained into the funnel and directed down through the arm into the container. The container is then stood upright for dispensing the stored oil or other fluid through a valve, which is also recessed in the container, into a larger recycling or other collection facility.

  • Patent number: 5295907
Abstract: A device for limiting the torque transmitted from a drive shaft to a driven shaft comprising a first body having a cylindrical portion and being adapted for rotation with one shaft and a second body having a cylindrical portion and being adapted for rotating the other shaft. The cylindrical portion of one body is mounted within the cylindrical portion of the other body for relative rotation with respect thereto about an axis which is eccentric to the axis of rotation of the one body. A pin carried by the cylindrical portion of the other body for radial movement with respect thereto has inner and outer ends, with the inner end held engaged with the cylindrical portion of the one body by a C-ring to allow the drive shaft to rotate the driven shaft until the torque transmitted between them overcomes the C-ring to allow the cylindrical portions of the bodies to rotate relatively to one another.
