  • Patent number: 4666699
Abstract: A stain-fixative composition, for use in the microscopic identification of enteric protozoa and other parasites in fecal specimens, contains Ponceau S Stain, Chlorazol Fast Pink BK Stain, Trypan Blue Stain, dimethyl sulfoxide and a fixative component. The fixative component may be either a polyvinyl alcohol fixative or may be a mixture of isopropanol, acetic acid, liquified phenol, distilled water and optional glutaraldehyde. The stain-fixative composition is simple to prepare, has a long shelf life at ambient conditions, is easy to use and is suitable for preparing formalin or tap water concentrates, wet mount slides, or permanent smears prepared with gelatin-glycerol or resinous mounting media. In addition, the stain-fixative composition is free from the toxic mercury compounds often found in prior art staining reagents. The stain-fixative composition gives superior fixation and resolution, yet its use requires a minimum of time and attention in the laboratory.

  • Patent number: 4664886
Abstract: A trimode gas detection instrument having three operating modes, one which monitors the level of combustible gases, a second which monitors oxygen, and a third which monitors the displacement of air by an unknown gas. Only two sensors are used, a combustible gas sensor and an oxygen sensor. A switch selects the input to a readout so that the user can quickly observe the concentration readings in any of the three modes. In the depletion mode the readout is calibrated in relation to the inverse of the normal concentration of oxygen in air--i.e., zero depletion corresponds to an oxygen concentration of 21%. In the event that an unknown gas displaces air in a sample atmosphere, concentration of the unknown gas appears on the readout, such that zero oxygen corresponds to a concentration of 100% unknown gas.

  • Patent number: 4656130
Abstract: A collagen coated cell growth plate comprises a substrate coated with a storage stable coating of collagen fibrils. The method of preparing the collagen coated cell growth plates comprises dispensing biologically active collagen fibrils suspended in distilled water, onto a tissue culture dish. Thereafter, the dish containing the collagen fibril suspension is placed in a laminar flow hood provided with a sterile air stream and ultraviolet light. The fibrils sediment and adhere to the bottom of the dish, the water evaporates in the sterile air stream and is removed in the laminar flow hood exhaust, and the ultraviolet light ensures that the resulting thin layer of collagen fibrils is sterile and ready for the inoculation of living cells. The method yields a convenient precoated cell growth plate which can maintain reasonable shelf life when kept at room temperature without any significant decrease in cell growth support properties.
