  • Patent number: 4655859
Abstract: A high energy, high performance, ultrahigh-burning rate composite propell results when 2-azidoethyl acrylate is copolymerized with acrylic acid and is employed as the binder system for the composite propellant. The energetic binder when used in an amount of about 4.25 weight percent of an azido-based propellant composition as compared to a ethyl acrylate binder system results in a specific impulse increase from about 264 (lb-s/lb) to about 275 (lb-s/lb), and a burning rate increase from about 13.7 ips to about 19.8 ips at 1000 psia, and a burning rate increase from about 21.6 ips to about 30.2 ips at 2000 psia. The other propellant ingredients comprise a high solids loading of ammonium perchlorate, aluminum flake and aluminum powder, a burning rate catalyst of carboranylmethyl propionate, graphite linters, the crosslinking and curing agent 4,5-epoxycyclohexylmethyl 4',5'-epoxycyclohexylcarboxylate (ERL-4221), tris-1,2,3[bis(1,2-difluoroamino)ethoxy]propane (TVOPA), and a processing aid of lecithin.

  • Patent number: 4655858
Abstract: Preformed metal/oxidant agglomerates for enhancement of propellant burning ate are prepared from a finely divided metal (aluminum, boron, titanium, etc.), ammonium perchlorate, and a small quantity of the same binder material that goes into the manufacture of the propellant, such as, hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene crosslinked with a polyisocyanate. Additional ingredients can be incorporated into the agglomerates to bring about further enhancement of burning rate, such as, an ammonium perchlorate decomposition accelerator triphenylbismuthine, a carboranyl burning rate enhancer, iron oxide, etc. Agglomerates are prepared in a fluorinated and/or chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent in which the agglomerate formulation ingredients are insoluble. Any remaining solvent is then evaporated under reduced pressure and the agglomerates are subsequently cured. Optimum mesh size of the agglomerates is 300-500 micrometers.

  • Patent number: 4655860
Abstract: The effectiveness of the burning rate accelerator, iron oxide (Fe.sub.2 Ob.3), is enhanced, and a markedly improvement in the mechanical properties of a propellant composition are simultaneously achieved as a result of grinding a composite propellant paste in a roller mill instead of in a conventional sigma blade propellant mixer. The propellant paste is composed of a hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene prepolymer, fluid-energy mill-ground ammonium perchlorate, dioctyl adipate, aluminum oxide, isophthaloyl bis-1-(2-methylaziridine), and iron oxide. The final product has a higher stress capability, higher strain capability, higher modulus, and higher gel fraction, and a burning rate that is about 80% higher as compared with sigma blade propellant ground and mixed propellant.

  • Patent number: 4632830
Abstract: A living, attenuated, oral vaccine system is described for the immunization gainst enteric disease. This oral vaccine is a genetic hybrid derivative of an attenuated galactose epimeraseless strain of S. typhi which carries at least one protective antigen other than normal somatic S. typhi antigens. The oral vaccine can provide protection against both typhoid fever and at least one other enteric disease. A bivalent oral vaccine is described wherein the non-typhoid protective antigen is the plasmid-encoded form I antigen of Shigella sonnei. A protective antigen from Shigella sonnei was transferred to a streptomycin resistant mutant of S. typhi strain Ty21a. The transconjugant S. typhi strain expressed both S. typhi and S. sonnei antigens and protected experimental animals against lethal infections with either S. typhi or S. sonnei. This strain is considered to be useful as a vaccine against typhoid fever and bacillary dysentery caused by S. sonnei. The mutated galactose epimeraseless S. typhi strain such as S.

  • Patent number: 4623936
Abstract: A method of error processing is disclosed in which the first erroneous line etected in a facsimile transmission is decoded, and printed in the normal manner, up to the point in the line where an error is detected. An erroneous portion of the line is then defined to be the point in the line from which the error is detected as well as four color changes to the left. This erroneous portion is replaced by the corresponding picture elements in the immediately preceding line. The resulting "corrected" line is then used as a new "previous line" and the process is repeated with the erroneous portion of each subsequent line being replaced with white until a full line is properly decoded.
