    Abstract: In a process for forming a nonwoven reinforced cellulosic material, for use in applications such as wipes and disposable clothing, which comprises applying adhesive to a ply of nonwoven scrim, bringing at least one cellulosic ply into contact with the scrim to form a substantially unbonded laminate, the improvement comprising applying pressure to discrete regions of said substantially unbonded laminate while said adhesive is in an activated condition. The application of pressure to discrete regions achieves ply attachment at only intermittent points on the scrim and can also serve to provide an embossed laminate texture. The product so formed is strong and has desirable absorbency, texture, bulk, hand and limpness.

    Abstract: A device for measuring pressure between two cylinders of a press which includes a first mirror fixed to the end of a journal of one of the cylinders in a position perpendicular to the cylinder axis and a relatively stationary second mirror spaced substantially parallel to the first mirror. A light emitter at one edge of the mirrors, and lying in the common plane of the cylinders, directs a concentrated beam of light between the mirrors at a shallow angle of incidence for multiple reflection, with the point of exit of the beam at the other edge of the mirrors shifting in accordance with changes in the angular position of the first mirror as a result of slight bowing of the cylinder in response to changes in applied pressure. A photocell at the region of exit receives the beam to produce an output signal which varies in accordance with the shift in the point of exit of the beam to constitute a measure of the applied pressure.

    Abstract: A circuit for operating a high power ionizable discharge device such as a xenon flash tube or other gas filled lamp includes a trigger circuit for gating the device periodically to produce a discharge condition. A capacitive energy storage circuit discharges through the device when the device is placed in a discharge condition. A low resistance power supply circuit charges the energy storage circuit. First and second sensing circuits respectively detect the charge level of the energy storage circuit and detect discharge of the discharge device. A switching device comprising a zero crossing solid state relay controls the energization of the power supply circuit. A control circuit is operated by the first sensing circuit to operate the switching device so that the power supply circuit is deenergized when the energy storage circuit is charged to a predetermined level.

    Abstract: A cone for a loudspeaker in which the shear function is more nearly the same at all radii, the shear function being the product of the effective axial thickness at a given radius multiplied by the circumferential length at such radius. The cone is preferably of curved or "exponential" cross section, deeply angled at a central throat but flattening out to approach a plane at the periphery. The cone is made of light, dimensionally stable material characterized by a high velocity of sonic conduction and is preferably in the form of hollow spheres of glass of small dimension in a binder of epoxy or the like. In an alternate embodiment the cone is made of a hard solid acrylic plastic in thin section and with supporting ribs to provide both rigidity and a substantially constant shear function. Encircling the cone is a flexible hinge or "surround". Interposed between the hinge and the edge of the cone is a light collar having axial rigidity to ensure that the edge of the cone remains in a planar locus.

    Abstract: A cutting tooth is carried on the outer end portion of a shaft which is eccentrically mounted within a power-rotated boring bar and which may be selectively turned within the bar to enable the tooth to be adjusted between an inactive retracted position and an active cutting position. By sliding the shaft in one direction, serrated rings mounted on the outer end portion of the shaft and within the outer end portion of the bar may be uncoupled to permit turning of the shaft. When the shaft is slid in the opposite direction, the rings are recoupled to establish a torsionally stiff rotational drive to the tooth by way of the outer end portions of the bar and the shaft. Turning of the shaft to adjust the tooth to its cutting position also effects outward adjustment of support pads for maintaining the outer end portion of the bar in a stable radial position during the boring operation.

    Abstract: Means for measuring and correctively changing the thickness of a film of water on the plate of an offset printing press which includes a light source forming a spot of light on the plate with light pick-up means including a photocell producing an output signal in response to remitted light. A disc carrying two filters in symmetrically spaced sectors is interposed in the path of the light reaching the photocell. The first filter is a band pass filter which passes a wavelength slightly separated from a maximum light absorption band of water. The second filter passes a wavelength which is well separated from the maximum light absorption band of water and which lies in a region of where there is minimum change of absorption as a function of film thickness. As a result the photocell is subjected to an alternating series of "measuring" light pulses and "reference" light pulses through the respective filters.

    Abstract: A method is disclosed of adapting a length of sealing strip to suit an acute-angled corner in the frame of a door opening or the like. The sealing strip comprises a longitudinal channel-shaped metal-reinforced gripping portion having a longitudinal soft sealing portion attached along one of its outside walls. The sealing strip is bent to form two lengths which are respectively aligned with the runs of the door frame leading to the acute-angled corner, but with the sealing strip smoothly curved between these two runs so as to part from the door frame at the actual corner. A part of the sealing portion is cut out at the actual corner and replaced with a corner section which is shaped to match the acute angle at the corner and to cover the gap between the sealing strip proper and the corner of the door frame.

Conventional melt blowing equipment is used to form a gas stream containing melt blown microfibers comprising generally discontinuous thermoplastic polymeric microfibers having an average fiber diameter of up to about 10 microns. A liquid, such as water, is sprayed into the gas stream to rapidly cool the fibers and the gas, thereby allowing the production of high quality product at production rates significantly higher than in conventional melt blowing technology. In the final integrated fibrous mat formed on the forming surface, the microfibers are held together by gross mechanical entanglement with each other.

A pair of metal hoop rings are fitted into the grooves in each hoop for clamping the hoop to the container. A fastener is threaded onto one end of each ring with a hole extending through the fastener for receiving the other end of the ring, which is threaded so that a nut can be screwed onto the free end of the ring and against the fastener for drawing the ring through the fastener and tightly against the hoop and the drum so as to clamp the hoop against the drum.
