  • Patent number: 5424593
Abstract: Difficulties in cooling the rotor (28) of a dynamoelectric machine carrying a rotating rectifier (54) are avoided by providing a coolant inlet 68 extending to the interior of a rectifier housing 50 through which the coolant may flow to emerge from a port 66 in the housing 50 and flow via an annulus 52 within the rotor shaft 30 to conduits 98 to cool the rotor windings 48. The coolant is returned to the interior of the rotor shaft 30 and ultimately to a coolant outlet 84.

  • Patent number: 4930730
Abstract: An automatic neutral position locking system for a control surface of an aircraft. A hydraulic prime mover is provided for moving the control surface. A locking device is capable of locking the control surface against movement. A ratchet-and-pawl device is operatively associated with a rotary drive train between the prime mover and the control surface for actuating the locking device in response to the control surface reaching a neutral position. The ratchet-and-pawl device normally is maintained in inactive condition when hydraulic pressure exists in the prime mover. A pneumatic piston-and-cylinder device, when under pressure, maintains the ratchet-and-pawl device in normally inactive condition. With a loss of hydraulic pressure, the ratchet-and-pawl device is effective to actuate the locking device in response to the control surface itself reaching the neutral position as the control surface moves under external loads.

  • Patent number: 4926908
Abstract: A pressure relief and vacuum vent valve includes a valve body defining a cylinder having an inwardly facing valve seat. A valve piston is positioned in the cylinder and includes an annular closure portion axially movable toward and away from the valve seat to close and open the valve. The piston has an axial bore. A spring, of considerable rate, urges the valve piston closure portion toward the valve seat. The piston is selectively movable axially against the spring to open the valve and release pressure from within the valve body. A flexible duckbill vent valve is integral with the valve piston within the bore and opens inwardly for venting fluid therethrough only in response to vacuum within the valve body.

  • Patent number: 4926630
Abstract: Warping of the rear turbine shroud 54 and the resulting cracking of turbine nozzle vanes 24 may be eliminated in a radial inflow turbine having an annular combustor 30 with a radially outer wall 32 opening on a compressed air plenum 48 by locating a plurality of tubes 70 on the radially outer wall 32 in fluid communication with the plenum 48 and extending the tubes 70 inwardly so that the radially inner ends 76 are adjacent the radially outer edge 56 of the turbine shroud 54. The tubes 70 thus direct sweeping streams of cooling air along the rear turbine shroud 54 to cool the same and prevent warpage.

  • Patent number: 4920740
Abstract: The turbine engine may be started without the use of start injectors by a method including the steps of initiating rotation of a compressor and turbine wheel by applying an external angular accelerating force thereto, introducing fuel through a minority of the fuel injectors employed at about 5-10% of rated engine speed while continuing the application of the accelerating force, introducing fuel through the remainder of the injectors after ignition of the fuel introduced by the prior step and when the engine reaches 15-25% of rated speed while maintaining injection through the minority of injectors, and thereafter modulating fuel flow through all of the injectors to operate the engine in a desired fashion. Also disclosed is a turbine engine practicing the foregoing method.

  • Patent number: 4920633
Abstract: A commutator shell suitable for receiving a molded commutator core is fabricated by providing an elongated ribbon of electrically conductive material. The ribbon is passed through a set of rollers to form a plurality of relatively shallow preliminary grooves of a given width longitudinally on one side of the ribbon to partially displace the conductive material. The ribbon is passed through a subsequent set of rollers to form the preliminary grooves to a full depth and to completely displace the material to a width substantially equal to that of the preliminary grooves to form the predetermined pattern of grooves between adjacent ribs. The ribbon is passed through a further set of rollers to form valleys in the tops of the ribs and to divide the ribs into dove-tailed cross-sections overhanging adjacent grooves.

  • Patent number: 4920758
Abstract: An air circulation system for a refrigeration apparatus provides a controllable baffle for selectively opening or closing dual output ports. Particularly, the refrigeration apparatus includes an evaporator and an evaporator fan providing flow of refrigerated air. The fresh food compartment is to be cooled by the refrigerated air. First and second air inlet passages are provided in communication with the fan and upper and lower zones in the compartment for delivering refrigerated air in the compartment. First and second air outlet passages are provided in communication with the compartment and the fan for returning air from the compartment upper and lower zones to the fan. A baffle is mounted at the first and second air outlets and has independent open positions for each outlet allowing movement of air through its associated zone, and a closed position for each outlet preventing movement of air through such zone.

  • Patent number: 4915591
Abstract: The pump head liner of a small-size precision reciprocating metering pump, which has its application particularly in High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), is made of transparent material, preferably of synthetic sapphire or monocrystalline zirconium oxide. A pump head casing is designed such that a pump head liner is visually accessible. Cartridge-type check valve units of transparent components are associated with the pump head casing and pump head liner and mounted to be visually accessible. The opening and closing of a ball in a check valve unit can be monitored by an optical sensing system in order to obtain a feed-back signal for governing a control circuitry, having the purpose of compensating the influence of the specific compressibility of the liquid being pumped, upon the pumping efficiency of the displacement system under conditions of high and highest working pressures.

  • Patent number: 4915593
Abstract: The use of a single main centrifugal fuel pump for supplying fuel to an aircraft gas turbine engine has advantages over other known systems, however a problem has existed in that the centrifugal pump, when driven in a fixed ratio to the engine speed, cannot deliver fuel at adequate pressure under engine starting conditions. The disclosed fuel supply system using a main centrifugal pump overcomes this shortcoming by having a turbine-driven start pump added to the fuel supply system with both the turbine and the start pump receiving fuel pumped by the main centrifugal pump and the turbine utilizing the high flow, low pressure fuel to drive the start pump which increases the pressure of the fuel to a value adequate for engine starting. The start pump delivers fuel until such time as the main centrifugal fuel pump has reached a speed to provide the fuel to the engine at the required pressure, at which time the turbine is no longer driven and the output of the start pump goes to zero.
