  • Patent number: 6658650
Abstract: An apparatus, program product and method utilize a service entry point to trigger under a predetermined set of conditions to facilitate gaining control of a created job in a multi-job environment, namely when the job within which the service entry point was hit is not currently under debug, the job has an attribute that is common to another job that established the service entry point, and there is another job waiting to begin servicing a job having the same attribute. By conditioning a service entry point on these conditions, service operations may be initiated on a created job with significantly less difficulty, e.g., by automatically halting the job hitting the service entry point and/or providing the pending service job with a job identifier to identify to such service job of the identity of the job within which the service entry point was hit.

  • Patent number: 6658596
Abstract: An apparatus, program product and method manage a queue through the use of element-based journaling to record changes made to logical elements in a queue. In contrast to convention memory-based journaling, where any changes to the memory representing an element in a queue are journaled, only those operations that affect the logical ordering and/or placement of an element on a queue, or the logical contents of such an element, are journaled. Memory management operations such as pointer manipulation operations that modify pointers or other memory management data, but do not otherwise modify the actual elements in a queue or their relative ordering, need not be journaled. As a consequence, the storage and processing overhead associated with journaling may be substantially reduced, thereby substantially reducing the overhead associated with maintenance and recovery of a queue.

  • Patent number: 6654954
Abstract: A computer system, program product, and method utilize alternate program code associated with an executable file using a file attribute so that the alternate program code may be retrieved and executed in lieu of the primary program code stored in the file. As one example, for a platform-independent executable file such as a Java class file, a file attribute of the file may be analyzed to determine if native program code for a particular platform is associated with the file. If so, the native program code may be retrieved and executed directly without the additional overhead associated with interpreting the platform-independent program code in the file. If, on the other hand, the native program code is not detected, the native program code may be generated and associated with the file using a file attribute such that the native program code is detected in subsequent attempts to retrieve and execute the file.
