  • Patent number: 8231549
Abstract: A sampling device for sampling body fluid includes a lancet for making an incision, a capillary tube for drawing-up body fluid from the incision, and a test strip affixed to an upper end of the capillary tube for receiving the fluid. An absorbent pad can be disposed between the test strip and capillary tube for spreading-out the fluid being transferred to the test strip. An on-site analyzer such as an optical analyzer and/or an electrochemical analyzer can be mounted in the device for analyzing the fluid. Alternatively, a test strip can be slid through a slot formed in the bottom end of the device so that by passing the device against the skin after an incision has been formed, the test strip will directly contact body fluid emanating from the incision.

  • Patent number: 8222044
Abstract: A test strip with a sample receiving chamber having a novel flared portion that terminates in a sample receiving opening. The flared portion provides a reservoir from which sample fluid can be drawn into the capillary or sample receiving chamber. The wider opening provided by the present invention is easier to “target” with a sample fluid. In preferred embodiments, the hydrophilic reagent layer extends to the dosing end or side of the test strip and further promotes wicking of the sample into the sample receiving chamber and thus reduces dose hesitation. In other preferred embodiments, a tapered dosing end is provided on the test strip in combination with the flared portion, and this combination create a test strip that will draw sample fluid into the sample receiving chamber regardless of where along the dosing edge of the test strip the fluid sample makes contact.

  • Patent number: 8221333
Abstract: A puncturing system includes a support tape (1) that supports a plurality of lancets (2), a first reel (3) onto which the support tape (1) with unused lancets (2) is wound, a second reel (4) on which portions of the support tape with used lancets (2) are to be wound, a winding mechanism which, by turning the second reel (4), brings the lancets (2) supported by the support tape (1) to a position of use one after another and thus unwinds the support tape (1) from the first reel (3) and winds it onto the second reel (4), and a puncturing drive mechanism (7) with which lancets (2) located in the position of use are accelerated in order to puncture the skin. The support tape (1) between the first and second reels (3, 4) is twisted only in one direction of rotation by at least a quarter turn, preferably by at least a half turn.

  • Patent number: 8216044
Abstract: Among other things, methods and apparatus are disclosed relating to fairer and easier accurate calculations useful in games having tables of odds used to determine the outcome of a battle or other contest. Strength values for two sides are obtained, and calculations are made to determine which odds-value in the table should be used for the contest. If the values do not match with a particular odds-value, then probabilities for using the nearest odds-values can be generated so that the player(s) can determine themselves which odds-value to use, or a random number can be generated to automatically determine which odds-value to use.

  • Patent number: 8211379
Abstract: Methods of manufacturing test strips are disclosed. Embodiments include laminating a two piece covering layer over a substrate with a series of cavities, wherein the two pieces are separated by a gap, the gap forming a vent opening for the cavities. Other embodiments include covering the sample receiving chamber with a cover thinner than the cover covering the body of the test strip, the thicker body cover absorbing more force than the chamber cover to reduce the possibility of adhesives squeezing out from under the chamber cover. The present invention also provides an advantageous method of mass-producing the inventive test strips without having to align the slot or vent opening laterally with respect to the test strips and without having to punch a vent opening. The method is also well suited to mass production by roll processing techniques.
