  • Patent number: 5622045
Abstract: Foreign object ingestion damage detection and accommodation system for a gas turbine engine system having a gas turbine engine with multiple rotating members, such as a twin spool configuration. System includes speed sensors for sensing the rotational speed of at least two rotating members. Sensors are coupled to a controller which detects damage by comparing the sensed speed of the second rotational member to an expected speed. Expected speed is determined from the sensed speed of the first rotating member using a known characteristic relationship between the the first and second rotating member speeds for the given gas turbine engine design. Thrust loss accommodation is triggered when damage is detected. Accommodation mode provides a synthesized primary thrust control feedback signal in lieu of the sensed signal for a damaged rotational member. Synthesized signal is derived from the sensed speed for the undamaged rotational member.

  • Patent number: 5619935
Abstract: A heat recovery device for use with a portable incinerator. The heat recovery device comprises first and second legs which support a heat exchanger thereon. An air flow path is formed from the bottom to the top of the first leg, through the heat exchanger and from the top to the bottom of the second leg. An open space is provided between the two legs and below the heat exchanger. A portable incinerator may be placed within this open space. When solid waste is burned within the incinerator, the exhaust port of the incinerator lies below the heat exchanger. A blower attached to the lower portion of the first leg creates air flow through the heat recovery device such that the air is heated in the heat exchanger by heat produced from the exhaust port of the portable incinerator. A tube is then coupled to the second leg in order to direct the heated air flow to the interior of an adjacent building.

  • Patent number: 5487743
Abstract: The instrumentation comprises a pair of vertebral implants (1) provided with screws (4) for anchorage to two corresponding vertebrae located on each side of a damaged vertebra, and a plate (3) having two end portions (3a) for connection to the two implants, and equipped with serration (6, 15) for fixing it to the implants. The end portions (3a) of the plate have a rounded periphery and the instrumentation comprises fixing screws (50) having heads (51) which are rounded so that their surface is flush with the surface of the plate when they are anchored in the apertures of the implant and the apertures of the end portion (3a) of the plate. This arrangement ensures that the ends of the plate (3) do not come into contact with the vertebral discs when the angular position of the plate (3) relative to the implants varies, and reduces the overall size of the instrumentation.

  • Patent number: 5450051
Abstract: A card system and method for accessing a public transit system that employs a card pre-encoded with trip data permitting a set number of trips on the transit system and a card processing unit to receive and process a card each time access to the transit system is desired. The card processing unit includes a time write head to record the time of current use on the card and a time read head to retrieve the time of last use from the card. A microprocessor computes the difference between the time of current use and the time of last use. A trip read head scans the encoded trip data to determine the number of trips remaining on the card and a trip write head is provided to write to the card to decrement the number of trips by a given amount after use. The trip write head and the time write head are employed only if the difference between the time of current use and the time of last use is greater than a preset period.

  • Patent number: 5226557
Abstract: A protective wrap for use in packaging and shipping includes a plurality of flexible material strips whose length and width may be varied as well as the selected material and a plurality of relatively rigid material strips whose length would typically be the same length as the flexible material strips but whose width will vary depending upon the application. A suitable material for the relatively rigid material strips is corrugated paper or expanded polystyrene foam. The flexible material strips and the relatively rigid material strips are arranged side by side in alternating sequence and when a backing layer is not used, the strips are joined to each other by adhesive. When a backing layer is used the strips may either be joined together by adhesive or joined by adhesive directly to the backing layer.

  • Patent number: 5113931
Abstract: A combination pump and heat exchanger assembly in a manufacturing process temperature controller uses a cast metal pump case with two upwardly opening sockets receiving the lower ends of two tubes, one of them communicating through the case with the pump impeller intake and the other with the impeller discharge. Closed circuit and open circuit versions are shown. In both types, the tubes are constructed to function as tanks, at least one being a heat exchanger unit, and they are readily and removably secured to the case by threaded fasteners and are sealed therein by compression seals. The heat exchanger tubes employ electrical heating elements or chilled liquid piping units therein. A controller including a microcomputer responds to temperature of liquid pumped from the assembly through a process to be temperature controlled, and returned to the assembly, to control an electric heater and/or a motor-operated modulator valve discharging to drain while cool make-up water is admitted.

  • Patent number: 5071347
Abstract: A dental instrument for removing saliva from a patient's mouth is disclosed that includes a pair of tubes configured to be operatively positioned within the patient's mouth to support a pair of absorbent rolls at the sides of alveolar ridge. One of the tubes terminates at its proximal end in a suction adaptor having a sealing face for contact interface with a suction tube connected to a dental suction device. The proximal end of the other of the tubes intersects the first tube at its mid-length. An absorbent roll supporting perforated stem is removably inserted into the distal end of each of the tubes. Each stem includes a number of apertures in fluid communication with the passageways through the pair of tubes so that suction applied at the suction adapter operates through the apertures to remove fluid absorbed by the absorbent rolls. An adjustable clamping structure is connected to one of the tubes and is mountable under the jaw of the patient to support the instrument.

  • Patent number: 5012818
Abstract: A novel biopsy needle like surgical instrument to obtain both solid bone marrow biopsy and liquid bone marrow aspirate by a new method of obtaining both specimens in a single procedure are disclosed. The needle consists of two heads at the proximal end, two lumina inside its elongated body and two distal openings. Each head contains portal for entry for respective stylets for biopsy and aspiration. The distal end of the needle contains two openings leading to the lumina inside the needle meant for biopsy and aspiration respectively. The proximal one third of the needle is encased in a specially designed handle with grips for the index finger, the thumb and a cap for the hollow of the operators hand.Upon insertion of the needle in the cortical bone of the iliac crest of the patient the biopsy stylet is withdrawn. Further pushing the needle results in entry of the marrow cavity facilitating entry of a solid core of marrow in the hollow biopsy portion of needle lumen.

  • Patent number: 4974551
Abstract: A water heater which may be either gas or electric and designed for use in either residential or commercial applications includes a generally cylindrical molded plastic inner water tank and a generally cylindrical molded plastic outer shell which is sized somewhat larger than the outside diameter of the tank and is disposed around the tank so as to define an annular clearance space between the shell and the tank. By means of covers and end members the clearance space between the tank and the shell are sealed closed so that a vacuum can be drawn on this closed clearance space and thereby provide thermal insulation for the inner water tank by means of the vacuum. A related construction includes a double-walled outer shell wherein the two walls are spaced apart from one another so as to define a clearance space therebetween. This clearance space is sealed closed and a vacuum drawn in order to provide the requisite insulation for the inner water tank which is disposed on the interior of the shell.
