  • Patent number: 5705111
Abstract: Methods related to coextrusion of heat-sensitive polymer materials. The sensitive melt stream element (12) is encapsulated in a second polymeric melt stream element (16). Transport means (36) is preferably employed between the encapsulating means (20) and the die (42). A third melt stream element (68) is joined to one or both opposing surfaces (70) of the second melt stream element (16) between the encapsulating means (20) and the die (42). In the die (42) the encapsulated melt stream element (12) becomes an interior layer (46) between encapsulating layers (48A, 48B) derived from the second melt stream element (16). The third melt stream element (68) forms layers (72, 74) positioned outwardly of the encapsulating layers (48A, 48B). The positioning, on the interior of the extrudate, of edges (54) of layer (46) is adjusted independently of the combined thicknesses of a layer derived from the third melt stream element (68) and an adjacent layer (48).

  • Patent number: 5481996
Abstract: The speed of a high-speed powered boat such as high-speed fisherboats can be increased even at the same power output of the engine irrespective of the speed by providing on each side symmetrically with a plural number of fins each opening outwardly toward the rear end making an angle with the boat hull in at least two high and low rows along the waterline which varies depending on the speed of the boat, whereby the wave-making resistance against the boat is greatly reduced at varied speed of the boat along with a stabilizing effect to decrease rolling. The effect of wave-making resistance suppression can be further enhanced by providing the bow of the boat with a stem-edge guard with right and left wings opening outwardly toward the side lines.

  • Patent number: 5418285
Abstract: Proposed is a novel vinyl chloride-based copolymeric resin suitable as an electron beam-curable binder resin for forming a magnetic recording layer of a magnetic recording medium. The binder resin is a vinyl chloride-based copolymeric resin containing monomeric units having a hydroxy group which is reacted with an ethylenically unsaturated monomeric compound having an isocyanato group in a molecule and then subjected to a modification reaction with an amine compound. The magnetic recording medium, e.g., magnetic recording tape, prepared by using the binder resin is excellent in the surface properties such as gloss and traveling resistance as well as in the magnetic properties such as residual magnetic flux density and squareness ratio of the magnetic hysteresis loop.

  • Patent number: 5344457
Abstract: There is disclosed an implant for anchoring in bone and/or fibrous connective tissue and to which a prosthesis such as a dental bridge may be connected through connecting components. The implant is of tapered design defining a wide top portion for connection to the connecting components and a tapered body comprising upper and lower regions. The lower bone-engaging region of the implant is provided with a porous surface into which bone may grow thereby anchoring the implant. The upper region of the implant has a surface suitable for bone attachment which is different from the surface of the lower region. In one embodiment, the upper portion has a larger taper angle than the rest of the implant for increased stability and stress transfer to the surrounding bone. In another embodiment, the surface of the upper region is coated with a bioreactive coating to allow direct bonding of bone and/or soft connective tissue (gingival tissue) thereby inhibiting epithelial migration apically.

  • Patent number: 5296430
Abstract: A so-called Ziegler catalyst composed of a titanium halide-containing solid ingredient and an organoaluminum compound for the polymerization of olefins can be imparted with greatly improved storage stability by first subjecting the catalytic composition to a pre polymerization treatment and then to a contacting treatment with carbon dioxide and/or carbon monoxide. The catalytic activity is almost unchanged even after storage of the stabilized catalyst for 90 days or longer in nitrogen gas. The stabilized catalyst can also be used advantageously in a continuous-process polymerization of propylene by continuously introducing the monomer carrying the catalyst owing to absence of blocking of the pipe line with the polymer formed in-line.

  • Patent number: 5292973
Abstract: An improvement is proposed for the removal of the precipitates of a phosphine oxide compound as a by-product from a mixture thereof with an olefin compound obtained by the Wittig reaction for the preparation of the olefin compound from a phosphorane compound and a carbonyl compound. Instead of the conventional procedure of filtration to remove the precipitates, the mixture in a hydrocarbon solvent, after replacement of a non-hydrocarbon solvent with a hydrocarbon solvent, if necessary, is admixed with a lower carboxylic acid such as acetic acid so that the precipitates of the phosphine oxide are dissolved forming a viscous fluid which is immiscible with the mixture of the olefin compound and the hydrocarbon solvent. The fluid containing the dissolved phosphine oxide compound can be easily removed by phase separation so that a great increase is obtained in the yield of the desired olefin compound.
