Abstract: A method and apparatus for operating compacting machinery such as landfill, earth or asphalt compactors relative to a work site to compact the site material toward a desired degree of compaction. A first model representing the desired degree of compaction of the site and a second model representing the actual degree of compaction of the site are stored in a digital data storage facility. The machine is equipped with a position receiver to determine in three-dimensional space the location of the compacting portions of the machine relative to the site. A dynamic database receives the machine position information, determines the difference between the degree of compaction of the first and second site models and generates representational signals of that difference for directing the operation of the machine to bring the actual degree of compaction of the site into conformity with the desired degree of compaction.
Abstract: A light weight battery powered x-ray source capable of producing high intensity x-ray emissions with low power consumption. A modular construction locates all high voltage components including the x-ray tube, spark gap trigger, spiral capacitor and the secondary of a step-up transformer in a sealed canister which can be decoupled both mechanically and electrically by unscrewing a simple threaded coupling. A center module contains the primary of the step-up transformer, circuit boards for electronic components and a pulse counter/selector. A battery pack with rechargeable Nicad batteries is removably connectable to the center module. High intensity pulses are achieved in part by connecting the spiral capacitor at midlength to the spark gap trigger. An improved x-ray tube with light weight but effective lead shielding and an overall length of less than two inches is also disclosed.
Abstract: A fuel enriched ignitor for a fuel gas burner appliance wherein a fuel enricher tube is provided with a coupling having a threaded insert which, by way of a metering orifice, matches the enricher tube to the particular fuel gas being used. By both two-element and three-element ignitors are disclosed. The ignitor is also illustrated in a gas supply system having a single main valve which serves both the enricher tube and the primary appliance burner.
Abstract: A quick connect coupling for tubing. The coupling includes a tubular male connector member adapted to be telescopically received within a tubular female connector member. The female connector member includes a tubular housing and a tubular retainer cap which is permanently bonded to the housing utilizing a sonic welding technique and which defines prong portions for latching coaction with an annular bead on the male member. The coupling further includes a unitary elastomeric seal positioned in a bore of the female member housing and defining a series of axially spaced, radially inwardly extending seal ribs slidably and sealingly engaging the outer circumferential surface of the male connector member.

Abstract: Speech generation from phonetic code is carried out by a microcomputer based system which stores digitized waveform segments and appropriately joins the segments and outputs them to a digital to analog converter and then to a speaker. An allophone is generated for each phoneme designated by the phonetic codes according to the articulation type of each adjacent phoneme. Each phoneme is classified as neutral, labial, glottal, or medial according to its effect on the articulation of adjacent phonemes. Each phoneme is characterized by at least one center waveform dependent on the phonetic code, and an initial waveform and a final waveform, each of which depend on the phonetic code and the articulation type of the neighboring phoneme. Tables of waveform pointers are accessed according to phonetic code and articulation type, and other tables provide articulation types, times of each waveform portion, transition rate, fricative state, and pitch for each phonetic code.
Abstract: A power clamp including a clamp assembly which is moved by a power cylinder rapidly to an approximate clamping position and is thereafter moved by the power cylinder with an intensified force to the final clamp position. The clamp includes a support structure defining a guideway, a drive assembly secured to the piston rod of the power cylinder and slidably mounted in the guideway, a guide lever pivotally mounted to the support structure, and a clamp lever pivotally mounted to the guide lever. The drive assembly includes a drive pin which is received in guide slots in the guide lever and in the clamp lever.
Abstract: An adjustable control pedal apparatus for a motor vehicle including an accelerator control pedal assembly and a brake control pedal assembly. A motor is positioned between the control pedal assemblies and includes a motor drive shaft driving first and second cables secured to the opposite ends of the drive shaft. The cables extend respectively to the brake and accelerator pedal assemblies so as to provide rotary cable movement at each pedal assembly. A transmission at each pedal assembly converts the rotary cable movement to rotary movement of a screw member which slidably adjusts a pedal arm along an adjuster member. As the pedal arm moves along the adjuster member, the pivot axis of the assembly is moved so as to maintain a substantially constant feel for the pedal irrespective of the adjusted position of the pedal arm. The pivot axis is moved by a cam pin driven by the pedal arm and received in a slot in a cam member carrying the pivot axis pin.
