  • Patent number: 4309606
Abstract: The thickness of a hot metal plate is measured during rolling by determining the absorption by the plate of gamma radiation transmitted through the plate, the gamma radiation having at least one characteristic energy. A measurement value of the intensity of the radiation after passage of the plate is provided by digitally counting pulses generated by a radiation detector. Essentially only pulses which belong to the photopeak of said at least one characteristic energy in the pulse spectrum obtained from the detector are counted. The counted number of pulses is corrected for dead time losses by using a live time counter.Corrected mass absorption coefficients corresponding to partial thickness ranges within the total thickness range are calculated from the measured intensity of radiation passed through calibrating plates of differing thicknesses.

  • Patent number: 4210203
Abstract: There is provided a heat exchanger apparatus comprising a plurality of mutually identical heat exchanger coils. Each coil has the shape of a cup. The coils are placed in close relationship on both sides of a base plate which blocks a flow channel. The base plate exhibits a plurality of orifices, and a coil is placed over each orifice with its rim in contact with the base plate and surrounding the edge of the orifice, but only one coil is assigned to each orifice. Adjacent coils on opposite sides of the base plate are stagger so that their rims overlap each other without covering any part of the orifice assigned to the adjacent coil on the opposite side of the base plate.

  • Patent number: 4162703
Abstract: A plate-type heat exchanger comprises a stack of plates each of which comprises in a first direction a first end portion, a heat exchanger surface and a second end portion. In each end portion there are at least two parallel rows of openings namely one row of openings for one flow and another row of openings for another fluid. These rows are substantially parallel to each other and extend substantially perpendicular to said first direction. Thus, in each space between adjacent plates, one flow will pass between the screens which connect the spaces adjacent said space, wherein a pure counterflow heat exchange is provided for the heat exchanger.

  • Patent number: 4138888
Abstract: An arrangement for electro-magnetically measuring level of and/or distance to molten metal contained in a container, particularly a torpedo ladle wagon. Separate transmitter and receiver coils are located displaced relative to each other at or in the container walls so that the molten metal forms an AC magnetic screen between the coils when reaching a predetermined level. Before the molten metal cuts off the alternating magnetic field from the transmitter coil to the receiver coil, the alternating magnetic field sensed by the receiver coil is increased due to alternating magnetic field generated by electric currents induced at the surface of the raising molten metal. The top amplitude of the signal obtained in the receiver coil increases as the wear and erosion of the container lining proceeds.

  • Patent number: 4138030
Abstract: There is provided a joint between a pressure vessel lid and a pressure vessel. The vessel is intended for very high pressures and of the type comprising a thinwalled container which is supported by an external rigid support structure, such that the container provides the vessel tightness and the structure provides the vessel strength. The lid is clamped onto a container rim by means of screws via blocks. An annular shoulder is fixed to the support structure above the container rim. There is an axial play between the blocks and the shoulder. This play is adapted to be eliminated for a relatively low container pressurization at which the yield limit of the container material is reached. The screws merely have to provide the clamping force required to ensure the vessel tightness until the blocks abut the shoulder, whereafter a further container pressurization provides the necessary lid clamping force.

  • Patent number: 4105389
Abstract: A heat exchanger coil is formed by winding a plurality of flexible tubes to form a coil. The turns of the coil are separated in the axial direction of the coil by means of radially disposed separator elements. The turns of the coil are separated in the radial sense by inserting separating means. Said separating means are positively controlled by the radially disposed separating elements relatively to the coil, both in the direction of winding the coil and in the opposite direction. The separating means are locked in the radial direction of the coil by winding the tube over them.
